Mulberries are a favorite of mine, i made mulberry pancakes jut the other day, also note that red mulberries ripen when red and are north americas native species, black mulberries and white mulberries come from south asia for the black and north asia for the white, all three have cross bred on mass across the usa and north america as a whole because we tried and failed three times to start a north american based silk industry, people were encouraged to grow mulberries and due to silk moths having difficulties adapting and unskilled workers, that dream of local sericulture died.

While the white mulberry found a favorable environment in northern Italy (Europe) and in the early 1900s many families raised silk berries by feeding them with white mulberry leaves, for a thriving silk industry, you know we Italians are famous for high fashion
@crowverra5343
@crowverra5343 8 күн бұрын
unfortunately most america at those times when we tried didn't know which mulberries where preffered by silk worms, then specific white mulberry species' are preffered by different silk worms, they didn't know enough to be a success here, and rivals in the silk industry, like those in Italy, helped snuffed out any small silk buissnesses that did come about, they were more established.

It’s a good idea to mix the dry ingredients separately so they are evenly distributed with each other, and then add to the wet ingredients like the berries and water. That way you avoid or reduce clumping together of certain ingredients.

Great video those pancakes look really good. Also the mulberry trees have a useful very strong fiber that can be extracted from the younger branches or young shoots. This fiber can be made into cordage and spun into a very soft cotton like white yarn when rettted in water for a few days, washed well and declumped which is the hard part. Other plants like yucca can be made into yarn by harvesting the younger leaves of the plant before they open up. When laboriously pounded for an hour sometimes longer not uncommon to pound more and boiled in plain water for an hour they should be shiny white and very soft.

Wood ash in small amounts on some plants acts as a fertilizer in the sense of alkalizing the soil, as this is good for some plants. Also, in proportion to one liter of water, add 4 spoonfuls of ash and boil for 5-6 minutes. Then let the ash sediment settle for a few hours and carefully collect the water. This water was used in the past as shampoo, for the production of soap, as a detergent for clothes, especially white clothes. It was also used in recipes rather as a substitute for baking soda

Indeed! Mulberry is a family fav here too in Ontario Canada. Ground sheet harvest has been used for a very long time here too, the ripe fruit just fall off the tree. A short soak in some acid water encourages a drop in insects (vinegar these days, but any acid rich fruits will do). There are quite a variety of berry colours and flavours. The white berries tend towards pure sweetness and no flavour, the dark red/black ones can either be unpleasant OR the real deal for taste. If you grow the white ones, you can simply use the juice as a sugar base for preserves or ferment without getting a "mulberry" flavour and in place of other sugars like sugar beat or sugar cane.

If people want to complain about eating ash as unhealthy, they clearly haven't noticed how we eat in modern society. Grilling, smoking, heck even baking in an oven produces ashes. Pizza baking produces ash and some people bake pizza in a wood-fueled pizza oven. Even in a simple frying pan, you can get ash when you try to get a sear or want to caramelize some onions. It is small amounts but it is still there.

When I had the chance to go down to Melbourne in Australia back in 2010, my friends who lived there took me around the local region to see the sights. One of the places we stopped as a farm selling goat cheese, locally made for over a century, that was traditionally preserved by rolling it in (black) ashes. It was unusual to say the least, since I hadn't heard of that preservation method for cheese before, but it was actually pretty tasty! As for the health benefits versus harm, I think it has to do what sort fo pH you are accustomed to dealing with in your daily life. There are folks living in Florida who can handle the high alkalinity of the local water just fine. But I'm from Western Washington, where our local water sources are far more likely to be acidic--proof of this lies in the fact that hydrangea bushes, whose petals are white in neutral 7pH and often pink from a higher, alkaline soil pH in most of the rest of the States, those same bushes have blue petals instead from the high acidity of our soil. And when I visited Florida years ago, drinking the local tapwater...I actually got quite sick from my organs NOT being used to consuming such highly alkaline water (comparatively speaking). A little bit of off-pH water is fine, but I was in Florida for a few weeks, and hadn't known that my organs could be adversely affected by the local water. Thankfully, once the clinic I visited figured out why I was suffering, the cure was easy. The way how I 'cured' it wasn't just drinking bottled water (because even the bottled water down there is a bit too alkaline, though it was better for me than tapwater all the same). It was actually through consuming a lot more in the way of acidic foods and drinks, which balanced out the alkalinity. 1-2 glasses of lemonade a day was enough to balance my pH and make me feel well again, and I was able to survive the rest of my stay. I've also had similar problems in other locations, including the deserts of the Middle East. In that situation, I was drinking bottled water, but the food was grown and cooked in higher alkaline conditions than I was used to consuming. I just bought a squeeze bottle of lemon juice and added a squirt to each bottled water I drank, occasionally had a lemonade, and that was all it took. Chad, on the other hand, isn't from Western Washington. He already lives in that area, so his body is well adapted to the groundwater of the coastal Southwest. He's not going to have problems with alkalinity from a little smear of ashes on his pancakes. (Not nearly like I would, lol, but I'd still give them a try!) And since humans have been cooking over ashy fires since before we were humans (or at least H. sapiens--the oldest evidence for cooked meat are the bones of a fish that was roasted and consumed roughly 700,000 years ago!), I'm pretty sure a little bit of ashes once in a while wouldn't hurt anyone. Not even me!
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 7 күн бұрын
Thanks for sharing all of your experience with acidic vs. alkaline water. I was not aware of this. This is really good to know. I suppose that the sourberries that grow here are a good way to balance my pH if I'm consuming ashes. I actually notice a significant improvement in energy and overall wellbeing after drinking sourberry drink.

A comment on making cordage…. If you soak your raw materials in water boiled with ash, it will reduce the amount of time it takes to remove the unwanted materials. I'm cracking myself up: I'm 'hanging' on every moment here ~ the angle of the sunlight, the fire in the daylight, the collection of comal plates.. the form of the cakes and .. fermented drink ! I accidentally began a year long fermented drink in a jug ... at home in the fridge, but then could take with me on long town trips and let it ripen a bit. Cold fermented = no alcohol; I'll be waiting to find it out how you make yours ! Happy midsummer; aloha.

Perhaps you can get access to some type of fat, or oil, to place on the comal, to prevent food from sticking? The pancakes look great. I've never had mulberries before, but I did have other wild berries. Cheers, Chad! ✌️

Some mulberry trees have white mulberries that are just as tasty, the white mulberries a ripe when they are soft to the touch, and they taste extremely sweet with no hint of sourness, but the black ones have more sourness but a deeper berry flavour. you can also dry the berries in the sun and use the dried berrries to make porridge or tea in the winter. Also thanks for the new video!

Yes, there are so many different kinds of mulberries. I couldn't identify which kind this one is. I should definitely dry some for the winter.

My people use wood ashes as an ingredient. When cooking like brinjal or any vegetables,most of people from northeast india use this wood ashes as an ingredient,it makes the vegetables get cooked in no time

@@ChadZuberAdventures yes they did. They filter the ashes into liquid (taking away all the salty taste of the ashes into liquid form) . 1)keep some ashes into a container 2)make a number of small hole at the bottom of the container 3) put some water in the container 4) don't take the first 2/3 minutes filter liquid of the ashes as its dirty 5) take the rest of the filter ashes . Cook 1) cook some vegetables 2) during the middle of the process add some of this filter ashes water
