The Wooded Beardsman

Күн бұрын

I use a primitive net-trap to catch and cook a feral chicken at the off grid cabin in the forest. The wild chicken is cooked in an underground earth oven, over hot coals from a hardwood fire. This kind of primitive cooking is also called an hangi and was a survival cooking method used by primitive people. Kevin's Channel: / @modernselfreliance
My Gear (Shop and Support): www.thewoodedb...
Primitive hangi or earth oven is primitive man's version of a modern oven, as it traps the heat down in the hole to help cook anything you suspend inside. The smoke and light heat will create a more tender meat as the heat breaks down the meat fibers over time. This primitive cooking method is very much like a slow cooker in our modern times since the outer layer prevents moisture from escaping. These birds are egg laying chickens that have escaped from the coop and have been living feral in the woods for several weeks. As they are not scared of humans, they will eventually get eaten by a woodland predator.

A root cellar can be under a home but doesn't have to be. It does need to be dug several feet down as it will take advantage of the temperature stability of being down there. The temperature of the earth several feet down is usually about 60F. It will go down during winter but should be deep enough to keep the temperature above freezing. If done correctly it will keep your food between these temps. The name comes from the reality of storing food, usually "root crops" which are properly described below by others. This was before modern refrigeration took its place. However, it has come back into fashion with persons into living off grid, home steaders, and DIY individuals.

Hey bro it’s pronounced like Hung-E. Traditionally we heated rocks in the fire till they were white hot then they were buried to heat the food with. But you can also use old brake calipers, cut up train track etc anything that will retain the heat. Chuur 🤙🏽
@davidb1933
@davidb1933 4 жыл бұрын
Yup that's true but please guys don't use rocks coz there specific rocks and they may blow up causing serious harm or even death best to stick to brake calipers and railway irons basically heavy steel then put wet as Hessian sacks over the top then dirt covering it till there's no steam coming out (put down in the morn leave all day) then dig up and that's her sweet as bro 😉

Interesting oven. The method I learned was to think of it in three parts. Lowest part coals with heated rocks over them. I think to prevent burning. Middle part. Were your meat goes leaving about six inches from your top par which is the insulting layer which equal in valium to your first part. Think Ill try your method next time I'm out.
