To clarify: Golden was art director during the mid-1990's, but the truth of the matter was that he was hired mostly so Marvel could say that they had him in-house. This was during the company's Chapter 11 years, so they were after whatever positive press they could garner. I had long admired Mike's work, so when he came in as John Romita's replacement (upon John's retirement), I was delighted. Mike fit right in with us Bullpen loons, but it soon became apparent that he had been hired largely just so he could be seen, so instead of wasting his time sitting there with his thumb up his ass, he spent the majority of his time on staff drawing freelance toy design concepts and working on the Jackie Chan comics for Topps. Marvel's misuse of him was criminal, but at least we got to know him. A stellar talent and a legitimately terrific human being.

Sooooo happy that you guys shine light on the fact that Golden along with Art Adam’s pretty much create all of the image artists. There’s more drawing in one page than there is in most comics since and before. He is a natural, I believe he was self taught, but like Hendrix with a guitar it all was meant to be. This is a great look at one sick issue…. Thanks so much!

This is one of my all time favorite comic issues. As a kid, I was mesmerized by Michael Golden's art. Those panels are imprinted on my brain. But, I was also blown away by Rogue. She came out of nowhere and took out the most powerful Avengers singlehandedly.

Doctor Strange #55 - written by Roger Stern, inked by Terry Austin and coloured by Glynis Wein - is my favourite Michael Golden work. Just beautifully drawn and written. Also noteworthy is his 5-page backup story in an otherwise forgettable #46 (the backup was also written by Stern, and serves as a prequel of sorts to #55) where he was inked by P Craig Russell and did his own colouring.

Intimidating stuff, but they really impressed upon me how visually powerful comics can (and maybe should) be. Nice work, fellas. Nice to have Tom back in the house.

I just found out you guys had done this issue from your "Art of Michael Golden" video today and had to find it. This the most important comic in my own collection _because_ it's the first appearance of my second* favourite super hero (Rogue, obviously, even though she's a villain in here), Tom! Of course I also appreciate it for Michael Golden's art, and the importance of the issue for Carol Danvers after the horrible "grape - g = ?" Avengers storyline. Say what you will about Claremont's wordiness, it's undeniable, man can tell a story and all of his words matter. That's what separates him from the run of the mill longwinded writers in comics. *As for my first, well, I've long since reconciled myself to the fact that I will almost certainly never own a copy of Detective Comics #27.

I remember that day I read this in the store as a kid, while my dad was shopping, I sat down in the aisle and read the comic. I was shocked. Because as a fan of Ms Marvel no one knew what the hell happened to her. Then boom, there was this comic. I still remember reading this over n over , there were less than a handful of comics I remember the actual day when it came out. This was one. But even as a young kid I hated the cover. It looked like a mistake. With such an amazing comic. I thought why didn’t the cover just go boom. It’s like it was like the real cover got destroyed or something and the cover used was a last sec idea. But the real sad thing for me, one of favorite characters Ms Marvel got destroyed. She was such a great character. But so was Rogue. They could of kept her a bad villain n she would of been still great. But Ms M… was never the same after this. It was the end of her. I don’t care for anything afterwards with what they did to her. I can’t stand the “ new” Capt Marvel. Should of kept her like she was. Amazing comic though. The artwork is literally the best. The best.

I lost a lot of my comics in a flood in Georgia back in the day. My biggest regret was the loss of this particular issue. I'd been raised on the quirky art of Kirby and Heck....but Golden just was just stellar. There was a panel in this issue that shows Storm in a swim suit with her hair combed to the side with an orchid in her white long hair....that..just sold me on anything Golden does and did!...He is just soo detailed..it's almost mystical. He did a rendering of Doc Strange and I heard music when I saw his art. Ditko would have been proud. Thanks for this spotlight on this particular book. Just can not bring myself to purchase the $1.00 reprint...just hurts my feelings. Love your videos!!
@Mokkari773 жыл бұрын
The Carol Danvers debacle happened because originally writer David Micheline planned to have Carol be pregnant with a Kree/human hybrid due to a plot by the Kree Supreme Intelligence. However Jim Shooter nixed it because there was a "What if?" issue that had come out around the same time that had a similar plot point. Because they had already set up her being pregnant they had to come up with a new last minute story so they devised the Marcus thing.
@Naurif3 жыл бұрын
To me, this is one of the best issues ever drawn--full stop. Golden was a luminary for his time (for any time, really); there's just no other way to put it. Micronauts, Dr. Strange, Marvel Fanfare--whatever he touched--was an artistic event in comics! Great video.

The depth and the lighting are elements that didn't seem to survive the generations, and I think that's crucial. Not a whole lot of intelligent shadow work in early Image. Those angled down-shots where the camera is above and to the side of a room feel like you're looking down into a 3-D diorama or a tabletop model display. Glorious.

I wonder if there is a way to design some kind of transparency sheet that would mimic the muted colors of newsprint comics? Something like a sepia-tinted film to lay over my X-Men omnibus pages, for example, to make the colors less garish?

I discovered Michael Golden around 1980 in Micronauts. I was 14 years old and I could not believe this guy's art! It kind of ruined comics for me in a way, because suddenly every other artist was obsolete. Similar to when Adams came along in the 60's. I kept wondering why this guy was not super popular and not drawing waaay more books (his work was rare). It seemed like nobody knew who he was back then.
