I really loved the trade pb vol 1. Its such a great story. It's sad what they all went through. Both army's and the civilians.

I remember a family friend coming over to our house when this came out and I had a copy of this book lying about. At first he scoffed and said, "yeah, I sure THIS is going to be accurate" and picked it up to trash it. He started to page through it though and would say, "I remember this airport" and then later pointing to the sandbags on the metal roofs of the barracks and told me why they were there. Some of the details in the book shook him up up a bit and he was surprised what details they got right.

If I recall, I could be off, Doug Moench served in The Nam'. Something about every posting he got was always overrun.

I bought a few of these about 10yrs ago. The art is very good. And the stories are too. Get them while they are still cheap.

In reference to the difficulties they had adhering to the comics code, Doug Murray once told me at a convention that had to modify the cover to issue 5, basically taking out some entrails. But, he pointed out that if you look closely at the second figure tied to the post, you’ll seen some that Marvel missed hanging between the unfortunate victim’s legs. Always loved the Michael Golden ‘Nam issues!

I managed to get #1 for twenty bucks at a comic convention in town. Super lucky!

My father is an Army Viet Nam Vet. When I was a kid I bought him the Punisher Invades the Nam issues and he liked them enough to hunt down the entire Nam series at the local comic shops. Still has them to this day and talks fondly of them. Especially the author Doug Murray.

Murray and Golden had recently done some Nam stories for Hama's Savage Tales. In the Golden interview book put out by Two Morrows, he says that he'd just agreed to be the regular Batman artist when Hama poached him for the new Nam book. Hama had been one of Golden's early editors at DC on Mister Miracle. Armando Gil had already inked Golden on that boggling Avengers Annual in 1981.

Went from GI Joe to this. Love Murray's story and intent and Golden's art. Shame Marvel had to mess with it once it got successful.

this comic was superb! such a great mix between goofy and super serious. i love hearing the crazy Hama stories in interviews. also before the magazine even i think there were nam stories in savage tales by marvel. golden was doing the art on those as well. i hope you guys get to at least an issue of savage tales. great stories and art in those.

I am not a war comic aficionado, could not be persuaded to crack an issue of GI Joe. But I remember purchasing two copies of this... quite an investment for a 12 year old. The art and story of were revelatory. Will Eisner is the comparison I would make off the top of my head. Like Hex, it lost my interest a few issues in.

I bought the first trade. On a side note, the paper isn't prenium, yet still a little glossy and the colors are too saturated. Crazy how the choices made for newsprint don't translate for what should be an upgrade. Crazy how the publishers have a great catalogue they just ruin for new audiences by not reducing the colour saturation by 20%.
