Tommy the Cat might be the best example of ALL the things he can do with a bass guitar. (He also does vocals at the same time in every song,). Jerry Was a Race Car Driver is the first obvious song you have to do though. It's a classic and their most famous song

Primus is definitely a band that heavily embraces comedy. They often start out a concert "Hello we're Primus and we suck." :)
@ProffAndy4 жыл бұрын
They used to start out with that a long time ago. The band have stopped saying it, but the fans still mention it from time to time. ;)

Agreed, if you don't have a light heart or understanding of the lack of seriousness then you need to re examine the material. No fault of the poster of the material, just hasn't listened long enough to get it
@BenC4604 жыл бұрын
This is one of my favorite Primus songs but it really isn't a good place to start with them imo. They have a very distinct, strange style and can be very experimental. It's a style you should ease into before getting to the more out there songs. Try Jerry Was A Race Car Driver, Wynona's Big Brown Beaver or Tommy The Cat. Those are very Primus but a little more digestable. You still have Les Claypool's v ery distinctive vocal style though.

Good news and bad news, the vocals are always like that; whimsical and silly is the definition of Primus. Especially in the videos, so be prepared for that ride if you listen to more.

If you're going to look at another Primus video, I think one of the best ones to watch that showcases Les' bass playing and the band in general is "American Life" from the 2011 Bonnaroo concert. A lot of his distinct strumming and slapping. kzbin.info/www/bejne/haK8iqNrmLmog5o

Great reaction. Damn you never heard Primus yet? Pronounced Prime us :) Their whole thing is being weird. Hence the whimsical lyrics and vocal style. It only gets weirder. This song is kind of a mellow one. His bass skills were not really emphasized on this song. The most popular songs would be: Jerry was a Race Car Driver, Tommy the Cat, My Name is Mud. As well as some others. Those would showcase their skills better. Just saw them live a couple months back at the very last Slayer show ever at the LA forum. Excellent.

Tommy best me to it. I was going to suggest "To Defy the Laws of Tradition." But yeah, Les Claypool is a bass genius (was considered to replace Newsted in Metallica for a while), but he likes to have fun rather than burn your eyeballs out of your head.

Fact check: I am, in fact, an idiot. Les Claypool tried out for Metallica in the 80s, after Cliff died. I'm going senile.

Primus is extremely talented. They are funny but they are no joke. I'd recommend checking out any other primus song this one is for experienced Primus fans. If you want a different Les Claypool project try Oysterhead - Mr. OYSTERHEAD. Les claypools vocals...I wouldnt give them too much mind at first, the music itself is outstanding. Or maybe even try Les Claypools Highball with the Devils - El Sobrante Fortnite. That Oysterhead song though...I'd recommend it. That bass...another level of funk.

I recently wrote another KZbinr that did a first time reaction to Primus that I was at Woodstock 94 and they were one of the many bands that played there. Their performance was incredible, the show was incredible and the whole experience was incredible. Les claypool is one of the best bassist I have ever heard. One I can almost guarantee that you will like is my name is mud. But you need to watch the official video off of their album pork soda.
@chuckgraf81414 жыл бұрын
This is a tune you would enjoy more if you were already a fan of the band. It's really pretty mellow as far as the bass work goes. There are many more songs they do that really showcase what Les is capable of on the instrument. I recommend John the Fisherman or Laquerhead or Shake Hands With Beef.

If you look at the main vocalist as a narrator/storyteller and not a lead singer, it makes Primus easier to digest and appreciate. Even Les Claypool knows he’s not a singer. He tells his stories but he lets his bass do all the singing.

By far my favorite song and album from these guys; Tim Alexander is one of the more under-rated drummers ever... You have to remember that this is just a fun band and meant to be. You need to listen to all his stuff to see his skill with the bass.

cool, but as others have said, there are many better cuts from Primus. Had tickets for their current tour doing Rush, but the damn virus postponed it. Hey, maybe that will be a new Primus song title.
Primus- “prime-us” Listen to “American Life”, “fish on” and his best bass work is in “tommy the cat” in my opinion. You might not be a fan of his voice but if you read the lyrics you might find you like the songs better. I did 👍
@roubador4 жыл бұрын
I know this video is ancient, in terms of KZbin, but maybe you will read this. This song doesn't even begin to highlight how amazing Les is. The man plays the bass like he invented it. A couple of songs that were popular are Tommy The Cat, Jerry Was A Race Car Driver, or a number of other songs already suggested in the comments. Don't summarily dismiss them based on this track. They can be somewhat of an acquired taste, but if you hit the right song, you will be sucked in forever. Give them another chance. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't.
