I remember an interview with him in modern drummer way back when he talked about having serious struggles with depression. I hope Tim is ok. He’s the reason I started playing in 93.

I’ve never done much research into Primus’s band members. Never been a HUGE fan of them. Like them. But, you get what I mean. Anyway…that’s not my point. Was just a preface. I was going to say that it SOUNDS like he battles with Depression, to me. I myself am diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. So, I quite understand depression very well firsthand. I hope he does find some “peace”, in this. I am also a professional Graphic Designer & visual artist. I’ve been battling a bad bout of Depression, for 3 YEARS now. (Quite possibly longer.) I’ve not done ANY meaningful artwork, in that time. I know it’d HELP me really, if I would just do it. It’s just…getting up & taking a shower can be difficult most days. That ITSELF is an accomplishment. Anyway…sorry I’ve rambled a bit, & this isn’t supposed to be about me (at least not trying to make it that way). Just trying to say I can relate; & that’s why that was my first thought, as I was watching some of this. Pure speculation really. But, seeing your comment..? Yeah; pretty much confirms it, to me. So, thank you for that insight.

He's a big influence in my early playing as well and was always my favorite Primus drummer....to me, it isn't Primus if it isn't Tim. It sounds like it's a pattern with how many times he's left the band so I wonder if the touring schedule is a little too hectic and they need to have longer breaks for him to recharge. Anyway, I also hope he's ok and finds help if needed.

It's more than a full-time job. The down time isn't really a day off. It's still thinking and planning all the other stuff. A 2-week staycation doesn't cut it. My heart goes out to Herb and the band. My guess is there might also be an underlying injury/pain issue which can weave into depression especially as an older dude on drums. It's depressing to feel your body decline. I'm speaking from experience because I just had to "abruptly" leave my drumming position with a band called The English Beat in the UK(The Beat feat. Ranking Jr) because after 5 months of physical decline and pushing through shows, I woke up with a completely numb arm, back and stomach pain on level 9, and shitting blood.....I'm healing up and rehabing and recovering but the touring days are behind me for sure. I saw them Live for the first time performing with FISHBONE in Los Angeles during the early 90's and was TOTALLY blown away!!! If he doesn't feel the passion anymore than he's not going to cheat the band or the fans with a halfhearted effort. Guys, drumming is more than just "physically demanding". Professional touring drummers are athletes, full stop. Just in rehearsal I can go over 2 hours straight playing, take a 10 min break and back for an hour, another break and the whole set again... I burn much more calories than I would on a non training day. A study estimated that a pro drummer burn up to 1500 calories on those 3 or 4 hours arena rock shows which this kind of band have been stuck playing for decades. That's as much as pro football (soccer) playe on an average game!!! All my teachers had major injuries either tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, etc Drumming at this level is music as well as a professional sport. That's just the truth. The drummers I know who successfully tour and change location for TV shows every year or so are gym MANIACS. Not gymbros, gym RATS. People who will take a run in the forest on New Year's eve at midnight. Seriously. I'm not even close to this level and yet the physicality is insane. We almost lost Dennis Chambers from Funkadelic a few years ago, and he's not playing heavy music per see. Look at Kenny Aronoff who's arguably the busiest drummer in the world! Dude is FIT fit!!!

It’s not easy being a drummer as the band lives or dies on your playing every show night. Granted Tim is one of the best but if he is going through a tough time with mental or physical health, it can show in drumming. Some drummers are just built to play regardless of how they feel but others have their playing and “sense of mission” severely impacted when they don’t feel right. I think Tim might be one of those types who can only play well when he feels well about the world..about his well being. I completely get it.

I feel like Herb has always dealt with something mentally. Not a spotlight guy, maybe? I've gotten some (in a small way) attention in life and been okay with it but I mostly don't like anyone focusing on me. I feel like he might be like that. A guy that's great at what he does but might not want "all the rest." Maybe not depression or anxiety but a struggle to want to be 'in that game.' I admire when guys like Herb step out. F-the outside world. Always do what's good for you, for whatever reason it might be.
@clayfoster82343 ай бұрын
Most musicians will tell you that at times you do lose the passion for it. Add on top of that, Herb is nearly 60yrs old, and he’s already seen the world. I think most of us can understand that there comes a point where the thought of living one more day out of a suitcase in Tulsa Oklahoma or Orlando florida makes you want to buy a rickety stool and 6’ of rope. Living on the road is great when you’re a 22 yr old kid. But at 60 it’s just a grind….

I saw them a couple months ago and actually noticed that Herb was checked out. There is more to life than touring and playing and that is all your life is at that point. I quit something similar years ago. Money is nothing when your life is empty and you have no off time to fill it. Combine that with the fact that the band “was shocked”. I am sure the signs were there, but so much energy is needed for the next show that people don’t have time to notice. To me though, losing the original drummer is a band killer. As a drummer myself, I realized exactly who he was started talking drums with him . He was the nicest guy ever and an invited me back to Sound check to see his kit. I drummed for thirty years, it's thrilling and rewarding yes, but exhausting too. At the time i quit, I'd been "done" for two years. It's so much vibration and the frequencies take their toll, look at poor Neil Peart : ( RI P. I play bass now at home, for fun but just the thought of hitting a metal cymbal near my head gives me PTSD. There's a reason Bob Seger wrote the song; "Turn the page" now I personally have never toured in a band, but I do know that our dreams and motivations change as we get older. When you turn what you used to consider a fun hobby into a career, given enough years, most people will fall out of passion for that old hobby. There are always the exceptions out there who will try to tour until they physically can't do it anymore like Ozzy Osbourne, but certainly not everybody can. I wish Herb the best!

Drummers are grossly underpaid and undervalued and it’s also the most physically taxing position in a band. It’s easy to lose interest.

How many times can you realistically sit there and listen to a Primus song? Two or three, tops.

As a drummer who has played for the Primus cover band "Primussy", I was disappointed in Herb's playing at Sessanta this past year and I could tell something was amiss. He does make some badass new age ambient music though. I hope he gets back into that.

They should have a contest on KZbin to find the world's greatest drummer. It would be big . It definitely won't find the greatest, but it sure would give a chance to a lot of guys to be seen .

He started playing at 24 years old he's 60 now he had open heart surgery I understand where he's coming from he's just in a place where he doesn't want to play anymore he wants to find a new path in life and his family his mental health his physical health is more important to him than playing in the band. It may have not been the best way to give the news to the band but that's his way of doing things he's very introverted and standoffish person a lot like Neil Peart. He left a heartfelt letter and you know if that's how he wants to do it I understand it. I mean he's been more to me as a drummer than any drummer the past 30 years he has had more influence on my drumming than any drummer the past 30 years honestly in my mind I don't think there's been a better drummer the past 30 years than him and there's nobody that's closer to Neil peart's drumming than he is after seeing him when Primus did the tribute to rush and Neil Peart for farewell to Kings. I saw him during Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and thm during the desaturating seven I also saw him in 1991 during Frizzle fry I saw him in 1992 for sailing the Seas of cheese and in 93 or 94 for pork soda so I've seen these guys a lot through my life and every time it's been an exceptional experience and I take every show to heart and I'm saddened to hear the news but I'm happy that he's in the place he wants to be and I know this has happened to him before but you know touring can touch people in different ways and you know I think his body in his health is more important to him and of course it's Wife and Kids then the band is. and his body is starting to give and all human bodies react differently to the Grind of human life especially when you're a drummer and you know he wants to take a step back and I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back with another band later on and I know it probably hurts Larry and les that he couldn't come to them and tell them this but it probably in his mind he probably didn't want to express all this in front of the other guys this is kind of the way he does things. sometime in the future he probably will come to them and spill his heart to Larry and les in person and tell them how he really feels about the situation and his drumming has never suffered I thought after he had a renewed beginning after his last heart attack he had and he had the open heart surgery that you know his drumming has never been better and he had a renewed sense of playing that I've never seen in him before especially in the last show I saw them during the saturating 7 tour and for The Rush tribute he was absolutely mind-blowing and if that's the last time I got to see these Tim Alexander with Primus then so be it. It couldn't have been a better experience watching him grow as a drummer and my own self grow as a drummer. I couldn't have seen them at a better time in their career and for such a poignant moment in their lives to pay tribute in respect to Neil Peart and rush and and another thing too I got to see a drum off that Danny Carey and Tim Alexander did it was actually a concert to pay respects to a friend of theirs that had cancer it was a benefit concert and Primus was there playing a show and half the guys in tool were there and Danny and Tim did a drum off and it was amazing I mean I don't think either one of them is better than the other but I would give the edge to Tim Alexander and he's everybit as talented as any drummer out there and I love his drumming I love him as a person and my greatest memory of them is when they opened up for Rush in 1992 at UNO Lakefront Arena in New Orleans during the sailing the season of cheese tour and for Rush roll the bones tour that was the absolute highlight of my life and I'm glad I've got to experience him and he is still like I said more influential to me as a drummer and as a human being than any drummer has been the last 30 years of my life and I've been truly blessed to experience him live so many times through his career and herb Alexander the ginseng drummer you will be missed love you brother and take care of yourself take care of your family and enjoy life brother and Primus will move on and find somebody else like Jay Lane. But he will be missed I spent the better part of 30 to 35 years looking up to him as a human being and as a drummer and it sad me to see him go but you have to respect his wishes and what he wants in life. And Danny carries got too much going on right now as a drummer and honestly I don't think he'll be drumming too much longer he's in his sixties as well but like I said he has a lot going on and if he does play with Primus it will be for a short time if he even does that all. You can't replace greatness like that all you can do is keep going Primus will find somebody but they will never find a drummer quite like Tim herb Alexander the ginseng drummer.

I always got the sense that, after his first stint with Primus and leaving in 1995, that his periodic involvement afterwards was more about financial involvement and security rather than about a joy of drumming. I have no direct evidence of this, but even his playing during the second and third stints never seemed to contain the same energy as during the original incarnation. It was subtle perhaps, but I think that I could detect that lack of satisfaction in his overall playing and vibe. He probably just got to the point where he felt that he had enough security and didn't want to spend the rest of his active days doing touring and such.

It's Herbs whenever he wants....Brain can fill in but it's not really his seat
@shadowstalker15153 ай бұрын
@@joncasity6099 Herb burnt his seat and no longer deserves (or wants) it. Brain is the loyal one who’s respectfully stepped in and aside every time he was asked. Never turned his back on his brothers, so the seat has been his since 1996 as far as I’m concerned. Also, he’s a pretty good drummer for a pseudo Mexican 😜

could be burnout or feeling under appreciated. i hope not . but the backline alot of times is taken for granted. particularily in rock and roll. still in a power trio difficult to know whats goin on here. wish him the best for decades of great fantastic playing.

Obviously, the guy has his reasons for leaving the band. Why Les and Larry are obliviously completely at a loss why Tim is leaving, I respect the fact that Les and Larry have respected his decision and are moving on without him. Personally, whatever his personal reasons for leaving, I wish Tim nothing but the best in moving forward with his life away from Primus and I am grateful for all of his contributions to Primus's success over the years.
