Awesome point. If you played the intro to "Fish On" to 100 people that never heard it before, and asked them what the song was about, I'm sure the majority would say something about sea captains or lobster boats or Moby Dick. So when the song is, indeed, about a fishing trip and landing a huge sturgeon, it's like a reward. And you can just read the lyrics to Mrs. Blaileen, My Name Is Mud, Sgt. Baker and so many more and realize Les is a great storyteller by any definition.

That is probably the single greatest thing that created my live for Iron Maiden back in '84. How often I would listen to a song, pull out the lyrics & wonder what he was writing about only to find out it's a historical poem, a piece of history, or from some book called Dune. So much of my self-driven education as a young kid was looking into the source of Iron Maiden lyrics whether it was mythology, history, poetry or science fiction. Their music truly shaped the man I am today.

Watching Les Claypool play live makes me realize that I’m not a good bassist...Primus is a wonderful example of what happens when you have an amazing jazz drummer, great death metal guitar player and...whatever kind of alien Claypool is and, put them in a band. With the exception of Victor Wooten (maybe), Les Claypool is the best bass player I’ve ever seen play.

Seeing them live is quite an event to witness. It's funny their all so incredibly good musicians that they can literally cover whatever material and it immediately becomes something of value and possible meaning just because of the level of musicianship. People have a very hard time explaining Primus and definitely have difficulty when introducing them to others. I mean what can you say, especially if someone's not a musician to try and convey what is happening and the value. It's something you either get or you don't. Kudos to those non musicians that love them. Such a structuring of a band, it would be such a loss if they weren't structured the way they are where the infallible bass and the drums that are forever interwoven with perfection. Crazy to have a band with the guitarist being the weakest link, but somehow his style is the only kind that could ever work with it. Well, besides when Buckethead accompanies then brains explode.

Tom Waits sings the gritty sounding vocals on the recording but Les sings this live. Its nuts watching him play that bass line and sing at the same time. The drummer Tim Alexander was a huge early influence on my playing. I believe part of his sound was that he used slightly smaller kick drums (20") than the norm so he got a punchier sound. As others have suggested for more Primus, "Too Many Puppies", "Mr. Krinkle", "My Name is Mud" and a favorite of mine, "Southbound Pachyderm". A song with a pretty cool opening groove is "Year of the Parrot". A song with some cool textures is "Over the Electric Grapevine". Les Claypool was one of the first bass players I had seen playing a 6 string fretless and "Over the Electric Grapevine" has some cool sliding using the fretless. (he also has a 4 string with a whammy bar!) Oh......and one more thing.... PRIMUS SUCKS!!!!

Did a deep dive on Google. LOL there are SO MANY different drumkits Tim's used throughout his career. I know (via Modern Drummer) that at least for 'Tales from the Punchbowl', he was using a 22x20 (right) & a 20x18 (left), as well as two other kicks (can't remember exactly, but I know one of the auxiliaries was a 24"). But there is at least one photo on Google Images that shows him playing a kit with what looks like twin 20s, and that's being generous on the diameter...

I definitely do. My friend and I were in the audience. They filmed the Battle of the Bands sequence in the little theater at Magic Mountain in Valencia, CA (about an hour from where we lived at the time) and we'd heard a radio ad calling for people to come down to be extras. So, being fans of both Primus and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, we of course jumped in the car and went. Turned out to be two straight days of filming and several of the bands - including Primus - played short sets (30-ish minutes, iirc) for the audience on both days. PLUS we got to see lots of George Carlin. And William Sadler (Death) did some comedy and impressions to keep everybody hyped while lighting and cameras were being moved for various setups. It was a good time. We were paid in KFC. At the part where the Princesses are hanging from the ceiling, they had the crowd do a bunch of "horrified" reaction shots. My friend and I decided to jump to our feet and point so we could pick ourselves out of the crowd when we eventually saw the film. Sadly, we didn't see ourselves when we watched it in the movie theater but, when the movie came out on DVD, he paused and found that you can see us jump up in literally one frame before the cut. Anyway, super fun experience. And a small portion of the crowd (including us, obvs) confused the majority of the audience by sporadically yelling, "Primus sucks!" in between their songs. People thought we were being very, very rude, lol.

that is victor wooten's double thump technique you were trying to remember. when you thumb a note down, hit it again on the upstroke, and right back down - see the flecktone's classical thump for a direct tutorial. as for primus - step into John the Fisherman next. then too many puppies. then southbound pachyderm. then jerry was a race car drive.

Primus Sucks!! (that's actually their official slogan, believe it or not) I fell in love with them and Claypool's bass playing when I was in highschool and picked up the bass guitar myself. The first song (and next Primus song I would highly suggest you listen to) I ever heard was Jerry Was a Race Care Driver, off the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater game. His slap, pop, and tapping style is just so unique. It's hard find such bass driven music like this, outside of maybe Rush (who are one of Les Claypool's biggest influences). And of course, I have to give my obligatory recommendation to listen to Symphony X - The Odyssey. You'll love it!!

Yeah, I remember when that really got started. Since the internet wasn't a thing yet, it was only the hardcore fans that knew what the chant was about, and why it was so amusing. You could always tell who didn't really know them by how they reacted in shock when people started yelling "PRIMUS SUCKS" at the top of their lungs at the band. One of the funniest things I saw from them was at a concert a the Berkeley Bowl. Some previous shows they'd had people throwing a bunch of crap up on stage, so at the start of the show, Les gets up to the mic and announces "OK, and please, no one throw anything up here on stage unless it looks like a bag of marijuana." *LOL*.
