I think the thing about Prince that made him a bit different in this song and songs like let pretend we're married, lady cab drive, cream, get off etc is his honesty it didn't feel made up for record sales like some others when they try to be "spicy". The non spicy side of him is deep also and seems very honest, the cross, beautiful ones, controversy, my name is prince etc. He defiantly is a rabbit hole worth jumping into. The end choir sounding vocals are actually a reverse message from Prince, running completely contrary to the message of the song. If you play the song backwards from end to beginning, you will hear prince sing, "Hello, how are you. Fine. Fine. Cause I know that the Lord is coming soon, Coming, Soon, Soon." Not many people know this, even 38 years after the song came out.

This is the song that got warning labels put on records and CD's and tapes back in the day. Tipper Gore who was the wife of then Vice President Al Gore bought Purple Rain for her daughter. And when she heard Darlin Nikki playing she lost it because it said the word masturbation in it. Now in today's time that's mild, but in 1985 that was a no no. And in Tipper Gore's eyes Prince was persona non grata, and she started a campaign to actually try and get his album removed from the shelves, but when she couldn't get that the record industry made an agreement to put warning labels on the covers of the albums.
