The biggest problem with this movie is that they cut it off when things were actually interesting. When they were kids, Derek and Odette were actually interesting characters. They were lively, passionate, animated and, above all, different. You actually felt their rivalry from being forced into a situation neither of them asked for and could see how it could develop from there in the right circumstances. The pieces were all there to make this a really decent love story. And then they age up and lose all the personality they’d grown in that time, leading to Derek’s infamous line - “What else is there?” Normally I’d say that’s a dick thing to say but in his case… he’s kinda right. What else is there? Both of them are blander than stale bread with nothing unique or interesting about them at all. They’re completely interchangeable with any of the Disney Princes and Princesses’ this movie definitely isn’t stealing from. And this movie suffers so much from it because they’re not strong enough to carry a film, and it knows that which is why the side characters get all the memorable songs, scenes and attention. If, especially in hindsight knowing there’d be 100 sequels, they’d just progressed a believable “enemies to lovers” dynamic as kids so the end of the movie is still them as kids but having more respect for each other now, it’d work a lot better. But as it is, it’s trying so hard to be a traditional Disney movie instead of its own thing when it not only can’t possibly compete and actively sabotages itself in the process.

I personally think they do but that's just me... they're still kind of bland, but there's a bit more character development at least for Derek. And the CGI sequels while pretty bad do give Derek and Odette some pretty hilarious comedic bits to play with (in addition to making Odette kind of ditz tbh)@@Mitsu2040

Nah if you look at the lyrics it makes sense. You can see affection building by their teens where she flirts with the guards to annoy him and it does get on his nerves. And then they are both manhandled as adults into the room and even though the thing that other people have been making them feel is dread at seeing each other, they both realized that actually, seeing each other was a relief. When you're upset like that, and there's someone you're a team with, who gives you emotional strength, you just want to run to them with your problems, even if they ARE the problem.

In the ballet Odette unalives herself because Derek proclaims his love for the black Odette if you wanna talk about extra lol - but yeah they had to change some parts of the story for kids

I wonder if this would have worked better if when she turned into a swan she still didn't want to rely on Derek and maybe Derek was upset she got that mad at him when she also only suddenly lije him for his looks but still was trying tk save her/look for her. Where then we see them bounce off their friends. Articulating more of why they actually like eachother but also find frustrating about the other. Or if they question the sincerity of their feelings BECAUSE they knew they were being set up all their lives. It would have been funny to see her roast him for shooting at her and his help while he gets upset because he genuinely was worried about her and WHY would he think someone would turn her into a swan of all things? And he gets that she's mad at him but if she needs help and knows maybe he could be the key to breaking the spell she should cross him out automatically. She could then be surprised/internally happy he came to look for her and be surprised he put that effort when his mom was already looking for someone else to Wed him off. While he could admire how she was trying to save herself at least. Just bring back the bickering x'D

But the idea is that it can be anything. It could approach as something easily dismissed like a mouse or swan and then transform to attack. If you don't know what form it's in then anything approaching could be dangerous.

At the beginning it's already gone and all he finds are dying King William, his dead retinue, and the smashed carriage. The Great Animal can be anything and Derek had no idea what he'd actually be facing. His training using the castle staff as stand-ins for beasts follows with the premise given what he knows until the fight.

I always thought they liked each other slowly and the song did a pretty good job. Even as younger teens, brom points it out. He acts like he hates her but he is clearly thinking about her constantly. They end up having a great foundation growing up and growing together but I'll agree that the movie does a poor job with their chemistry as adults

I prefer the barbie version. Daniel never once commented Odette on her looks. When they first met, she was a swan. Said swan turns into a girl, Daniel goes 'That's something you don't see everyday' and so they go on to talk about Odette's curse and Rothbart. Daniel genuinely cared about Odette and didn't want to leave her side. Derek on the other hand, was,ugh, like that whole "what else is there?" Bruh, you've known this girl your whole life and that's the best you could come up with? He was literally willing to kill her, as well as every other forest animal, thinking she was the forest beast, until she turned back into human self. Them falling for each other felt so out of place and was too fast, their chemistry just felt off.

I grew up with this movie, so maybe I’m biased, but I never felt the relationship between Derek and Odette was off. They literally grew up spending every summer together, it makes sense that they may have been developing feelings for each other without realizing it until they hit adulthood. It’s not uncommon for children to pick on people they like. And I never got the impression from Derek that he truly only cared about how pretty she was, even if he did say “what else is there.” I think he’s just stupid and doesn’t know how to express himself. My only gripe with this movie is how Odette was kind of sporty as a kid, and then as an adult she feels more damsel in distress-y.
