This song was written by Mike Scott, a member of the great Scottish band The Waterboys. I had no idea Prince covered it. It's a great song and this version deserves to be better known, IMO. (BTW, The Waterboys covered Purple Rain when they performed at First Avenue. The video is on YT.)

So, funnily, I read that Prince was one of Mike Scott’s inspirations for the original song. If Prince was aware of that, it could explain his changing the lyrics. That is, if Mike was singing about Prince, now Prince is singing about himself. Huh. Thanks for sharing this.
