Sinead's version is like a funeral possession, though nice. But Prince's version is way more passionate and spiritual, making you shudder.

Prince and Chris Cornell mastered this song in 2 different ways. I love and miss them both.

I've always liked Prince's version better. Of course Sinead's voice is incredible, but the whole mood and sound from Prince is just warmer and less angsty, which I prefer.

Sinead and incredible in the same sentence? wow ok.

I hated her version even before I heard Prince's

@@yousexymf Haha, yeah, it's a bit too depressing, like feeling hopeless, for me. I was a teen during the MTV peak and I was really sick of seeing that video. Obviously she was incredibly talented, but just not my thing. Prince, on the other hand, was my thing since his first album!

Prince wrote this for his then girlfriend Susannah and one of his assistants who had to leave her position because her Dad died. He and Susannah were in some major argument. Susannah recorded it first for one of Prince's side band projects called "The Family ".It was recorded in 1985. Sinead's version of Prince's song came out in 1990.

I saw Prince in concert earlier in his career when I was just 13 but I wish I could have seen him at Paisley Park, his home in Minneapolis. Rosie was part of his band and she has an amazing voice! You can hear her voice in many of his hits including, Diamonds and Pearls…check it out! 💜💜

This song was written for Prince’s girlfriend at the time, #susannahmelvoin…he wrote this after she ended their 2 year relationship…he then allowed Sinead to record the song

yes, Sinead's version was aired everywhere anytime back innthe 90's. I liked it but was not that fond of it. And some day, I've listened to this one and...indeed, nothing compares. Her recent death made her version popular again, but hearing it again everywhere, made me sick of it very quickly (and ironically, while she has other interesting stuff, people seem to recall only this one. A cover) Being and avid blues, gospel and soul fan, I'm much more into his version. Same occurred when I found his version of "Love, thy will be done", that he wrote for Martika during the 90's. This song was also a major hit, sung by a woman. But when you hear his version, there is no turning back.

I like this version, but prefer Prince’s original version in 1984 that was released after he passed.

It's Prince's song It's Prince's song IT'S PRINCE'S SONG! He wrote it for The Family and their version is my favorite. I don't like any other version but his and The Family. Prince didn't like that other version that everyone thinks is her song either!

Prince was the last music genius. He wrote SO many songs for others that no one knew, mainly because he would use other names...like this one. Sinead made it popular, and her recording and video gave it so much depth and feeling.

I tend to agree with you. Sinead stripped it down and made it meaningful. This one was a theatrical stage performance with meaningful lyrics, but it seemed to lack sincerity. I’ll go and look for Prince’s studio version; I don’t recall hearing it back in the day; but I doubt it’ll change my mind.
