Percival 'Perce' John Galea was born in 1910, many sources say either in Bathurst or Mosta, Malta, either way he grew up in Australia and like many boys from the Woolloomooloo area, developed a talent for mischief. But Perce never got caught. He started out as a newspaper boy and gambled on the streets as a kid, in his 20's he even won at the races, after a customer gave him a hot tip.
Marrying an Australian girl, he was married at 23. He worked as a milkman then as a driver and then as a legal Bookmaker,
Perce later worked for Sammy Lee in his baccarat schools and with Sidney Kelly from the notorious Razor Gangs. Then he bought into business with Sammy Lee and into the world of Casinos and Social Clubs.
Luck seemed to always be on Perce's side, even when times seemed tough, he would win the lottery... or would he? Some say he paid lottery winners for the ticket and laundered money.
Despite being everyone's mate, he paid off police and politicians and ran illegal casinos and gambling establishments. Perce never did time but was fined tax evasion.
Perce donated to churches and charity, was a mate to Chow Hayes our OG gangster and was mates with Catholic Church Cardinals, Premiers and Prime Ministers.
Perce made his own luck, living life to the fullest, He may have been a nice guy, but he was still one of Australia's Top Figures in Organised Crime. Handing over the reins to son Bruce, who we will feature in our next episode of Crim's Cut-throats and Convicts, enjoy!
