This is how the BBC broke the news of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh to viewers in the UK. Programming was interrupted by a black screen and a "News Report". Presenter Martine Croxall said: "We are interrupting our normal programmes to bring you an important announcement. A short while ago Buckingham Palace announced the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh." The national anthem was played as a sign of respect.
Interrupted programme (at least on BBC One England) was "Paramedics on Scene".

Perhaps nerves won't have helped the emotions either with the realisation that, as the on-duty news reader on the BBC News Channel at the time, that it was she who would be fronting Operation Forth Bridge (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_and_funeral_of_Prince_Philip,_Duke_of_Edinburgh ) and that after having re-read the Buckingham Palace Statement she had nothing else to say but had all BBC TV viewers at the time watching. Presumably at the end of the clip the AutoCue finally kicked in with the pre-prepared script which will have been ready to go for years and off she went.

I'm fairly sure she is a stand-in journalist who just happened to be holding the fort on BBC News for a few hours that morning at the time the news broke, rather than a senior newsreader who would have rehearsed such an event. The poor lady does seem rather terrified to be breaking such important news, but this is probably the single most important broadcast she has ever done. I did notice they brought in Huw Edwards to take over in under an hour, (although he was inexplicably replaced with Rita Chakrabati for one hour during the afternoon (possibly to give him the supper break that working time regulations entitles him to)), but I'm guessing he had been on late shift duties this week, as he did, at least initially, look like he hadn't had enough sleep.

@@MrDannyDetail She is actually very much a regular on the BBC News Channel at all times if day and night. But, yes they did bring in the big guns pretty quickly. One of Prince Philip's closest friends of many years gave a strong hint about how Philip actually died. To protect his dignity I won't reproduce it here. Philip was on his way out, yes, but it seems the end was actually very sudden and not quite expected so soon and at that time. His family weren't with him when it happened and the Queen was asleep. Allegedly.

Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth II and a father of Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward passed away peacefully. Yes. In his sleep, thank God. I'll be gladly missed him. This is for I love is Princess Anne, Princess Diana, Sarah Ferguson, and Sophie Rhys Jones, The Golden Girls. I still like Princess Diana and it's my choice of my opinion, she should be, she's better than Camilla Parker Bowles.

It’s such a shame @BBCNews announce this in an office with people running about around all over the place. You’re not Sky News. Do it properly BBC. Remember the days when it was the viewer, presenter and a feeling of quiet reflection? Now it’s the viewer, presenter, the cleaner, the 5pm finishers and staff who have just popped out for a take-away.

On BBC One England it was "Paramedics on Scene". BBC News Channel had the announcement a few minutes earlier. BBC One then faded to black and joined the News Channel where viewers were greeted by Martine Croxall as seen here. BBC Two was already simulcasting the News Channel at the time (as per usual schedule).

@@theebloxinator I would say this is a rare ident. Normally the BBC News report ident shown on BBC One is the standard colour and graphics for BBC News. Since this is a very important announcement concerning the death of a member of the Royal family, they may have made it for these circumstances.

Prince Charles probably won’t be keeping the title. It passes to him automatically as the eldest son but at some point it will probably be passed on to his youngest son Prince Edward as that is what Prince Philip apparently wanted although this may not happen until Charles becomes king.
