a lot of the comments are from people who were alive when he was around - hello from a younger prince fan! I'm 13 and I share my moms love of prince. we went to paisley park last year and it was so incredible. we also watched the purple rain movie together (I may have been a bit too young but it was still super good). I'm so glad my parents exposed me to artists like Prince, Queen, and David Bowie. 💜💜💜💜

Good job! Your Mom has introduced you to good music. I’m grateful you appreciate it, at your young age. That’s not something that’s very common anymore, makes me sad. My kids enjoy a vast array of incredible music they’d been subjected to since birth. I love that a great deal about my kids because they, like the variety of music, are well ‘rounded’ as adults. ❤️ Keep up the listening

Would Frank Sinatra have stood a chance in a musical talent contest against Prince? I highly doubt it. Because he wasn’t just a legendary singer, lacking the singing range that Prince had, but even though Prince was a brilliant multi instrumentalist and Frank Sinatra couldn’t play an instrument, Sinatra was a legendary arranger and conductor. So FS could manipulate music but not necessarily create it. What do you think 🤔?

My Mum was the biggest Prince fan, ever. When he died, she was blasting his music louder than the DJ in the local venue. When she died (Jan 8th '23) her whole funeral was Prince themed, per request, nay, order! Everyone was in purple, Prince was all the music. She demanded Little Red Corvette be blasted from the Herse, as it was! Albeit with the odd funny look on the way to the crem. The symbol wreath was brilliant and the food was starfish shaped shortbread, coffee, maple syrup and jam. The order of service was made to be the insert from the Purple Rain album, with my mum riding his bike. We were raised on Prince, I have his discography. But, this track was mine & my mum's Prince song from when I was ~4 years old. 30 years ago, seems like forever, and yet sadly nowhere near long enough!

So the year was July 1984..I went to see the movie on Long Island New York. We viewed the movie 2 times that same day.. That's how impressed we were with the film. The music was popping because prior seeing the film,I had the music a month before. So it was so fun to watch the cohesive blend of the film in conjunction to this music I was listening to so intensively. I was left thinking . He did it. He transformed himself into a mega superstar. It just worked the whole package. Brilliant album. I was supporting his music since Controversy hit stores back in 81. I saw something in his movement back then. He didn't disappoint, Purple Rain is a culmination of all those very hardship days and nights the man put into the recording studio from 77 on until that point, He deserved every accolade for this masterpiece.

@@paulmorgan2948 Being a day-1 fan of Prince, Prince himself & his music have always been inspiring, intriguing, witty, & absolute in many ways 4 me. Here's a story what I mean 2 how Prince "played" with in various ways all at the same time, his song,music,lyrics,fans,joke,serious,message,etc... When this "Purple Rain" LP came out & hit the dance clubs there were as we know multiple hits, pretty much the entire album. At times Prince would play tricks in songs 2 see if fans were listening, really listening. I was listening 2 every word being a lyricist myself, yet others, who knows some may still not know? I'd be in the club, house on tilt, the DJ spins "I Would Die 4 U" I'd see couples on the dance floor or the bar copying Prince's hand gestures from the movie 2 each other. Having a great time, yet still had no idea the song was really about God, & a message from God threw Prince's song. That was part of Prince's genius, his tricky touches undercover by masking the message a bit by using 1 word like "Darlin" in the song "I Would Die 4 U" & changing up the beat to a dance groove, 2 accomplish his feat with a smile of happiness on his face. 2 Prince it wasn't about trying 2 convert anyone to God, it was about what he believe God wanted 4 us all. By being happy, & showing love 2 one another, not outside in the parking lot fighting over some BS! That was also Prince's mission & what he wanted 4 all of us too! Prince knowing that people around the world 4 a moment in time, was able 2 make people dance, love & were happy jamming together 2 his songs, also helped Prince complete his own destiny. ++Peace,Funk, & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul++ Keep on keeping on! Thank you Prince! Last time I listened to this album with headphones was 1985...I was in SF General just recovering from a near fatal accident. I was 16 and literally was in a coma a few days earlier when my older brother made the 40 mile trip to visit me with my folks. At this point it was 50/50 if I was going to make it...no one told me that part. So my older brother was quiet and as he was walking out he handed me his 1984 Sony Walkman with this tape in it. I was a farm kid and didn't know Prince at all. I played that tape constantly for the next 20 days and nights! The sounds...the keyboard, piano, strings, bass, guitar, and vocals all distinct and perfect! I had never listened to stereo headphones before then...holy shit! A diet of am radio in my old farm truck just destroyed by this 43 minutes of brilliance! 35 years later my kids are watching Purple Rain the movie and asking if that was really how the 80's were at the end, and me not being able to answer because I am crying! Thank you Prince!

@@horrorpowerfilms9481 culturally wise,impact wise, popularity wise and even in terms of the sound it had, what album defined more the 80s than Thriller? Lol it was an absolute phenomenon regardless of if you like Jackson or not,literally the biggest album ever, MJ was the icon of the 80s, not even the biggest fan but it is what it is.....
@horrorpowerfilms948111 ай бұрын
@@johnsonmark65 Well as much as you trying to sound knowledgable, your mixing two totally different things, still I have I answer for both: FIRST. Thriller as "cultural wise" and "sound it had" does not match Prince's Sign O' The Times and Purple Rain (and like many critics said at the time not even 1999 album), BUT before going the obvious Prince route (subject of this video, not MJ), you might not know that REM, Talking Heads, The Smiths and The Clash had way more better reviews and better numbers on critics/experts lists of the best of the 80s then Thriller. SECOND. Thriller "impact wise" is just a mater of how many places, countries were forced to ship Thriller copies, Thriller was the album that was sold on malls, meaning you could stop by to get your sardines can and had Thriller on the same shelve at 5 bucks, so your so called "impact" is just MARKETING, people who bought Thriller din't even like music. BUT before you go all crazy, just think about it, you have no valid media data, no journalism proof, no names of experts/critics/articles that ever stated that Thriller had any "impact" other then sells. THIRD. It's sad that MJ Entertainment took the none-music buyer and brainwashed them with lies, half truths and false report sales, like the whole idea that MJ was the only artists with insane records. So you ended up with 99% of MJ fanatics quoting MJ press kits, MJ press videos and MJ team marketing tactics, still no fanatic dares to search for the truth because it hurts.

@theaterdreamer3 жыл бұрын
Andrew, I honestly feel bad for kids growing up now. Outside of a select few artists that are clearly very talented (Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Adele, among a small group of others), music today is a barren wasteland. When I was growing up (I was born in late 1971), music was exploding with creativity. A ten year period, or so, from about 1975 to 1985 saw the explosion of progressive rock (Yes, Pink Floyd, Kansas,, Rush), glam influenced pop and rock (Queen, Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust), punk, disco, the second British Invasion, new wave, fantastic r&b influenced musical gods like Prince, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston, funk including Parliament and Rick James, hair metal…there was so much experimentation with production, new instrumentation, etc. U2, Duran Duran, Tears For Fears, Howard Jones, Depeche Mode, Erasure…all heavily experimenting with synth pop. You had this veritable explosion of great guitarists-Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Ritchie Blackmore with Deep Purple and Rainbow, Brian May, Randy Rhoads, etc. You had The Cars, Blondie, Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, the Ramones. There was such vitality in music. People took risks. Pushed the envelope. You had the birth of hip hop and rap, Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, LL Cool J, and eventually rock and hip hop/rap started to blend together. The lines between genres blurred. Everything was possible. Most music today is soulless crap. I’m so glad I grew up when I did.
@andrewmaynard51983 жыл бұрын
@@theaterdreamer Absolutely!! Your line about peopling taking risks and pushing the envelope - couldn't have put it better myself. Most mainstream music nowadays is made to a formula or simply regurgitates old stuff (not in a good way), and relies too heavily on marketing. Sadly, most people seem to stick to the safer choices, and like what everyone else likes. Even today, there are many great artists not known to the masses (Joseph Arthur, Four Stroke Baron, Kevin Morby, Shakey Graves, Chelsea Wolfe, Emma Ruth Rundle, Motorama - to name a few personal favourites). But I'll always turn to the Gun Club when in need of some true 80s genius!!
@@theaterdreamer I love Howard Jones! Despite being a huge fan of 80's music, I never discovered him until a few years ago! He is not as popular in the U.S.
