I remember seeing an interview in Prince's later years where he said if he had not been a musician he would have been a teacher. But he was a teacher.

The "finished" version of "The Screams Of Passion" from "The Family" album is an all-time great recording; every song from "The Family" album is great. This is a rehearsal version. Prince recorded demo versions of the songs for The Family that are nice and tight.

At one time when the NPG Music Club still existed, we could be part of the sound checks. I went to a few in Rotterdam The Netherlands watching from what was called the "Golden Circle". Almost extra concerts. So cool.

I've heard much about that club, and from some Patreons who were members that got ushered up to better seating at venues at some concerts... totally awesome! And I think it's awesome you got to see some of his shows :)

Shout out to the Solitary Traveler, great suggestion. Susan Rogers said he had a watchmaker's sense of making music. Twenty six years old, the biggest star in the world during this time - an amazing talent & personality. Thank you Bryan. Prince has worked with and imparted wisdom to so many artists over his lifetime that it boggles the mind how much Prince influence is still alive.

Loved this - thank you for taking this one on, my friend! For all the reasons you listed... The chord instructions to the band, the sound desk, teaching band members how to use new bits of equipment - "the lighter you touch it, the more it does"... That's what she said! - and the truth that, despite it being a rehearsal only, he turns it into a brilliant arrangement. He's directing all that from the keyboard too. His Yamaha CP-70 that had been used predominantly on Electric Intercourse and so many other iconic songs. I love hearing this as it is an insight into life in one of those 10 hour rehearsal sessions. There are plenty of others out there in the ether but this is one of my absolute faves. FYI, the guy in the desk is Robert "Cubby" Colby - and he's more than likely to have been the front of house on the Erotic City at First Avenue clip you uploaded recently.

I like your guitar intro for your videos. Cool education on soundboards. Prince usually did a 2 or 3 hour sound check it each arena to warm up, and make sure the sound was right

He was so in control of his music. His musicians were instructed to play the parts he couldn’t play all at the same time. He was all of the music. That was eventually frustrating to the up and coming musicians such as the younger Revolution who wanted to develope their own music. They had to go and do their own thing and Prince knew this. They had reached different trajectories in their music. He then used skilled and proven musicians essentially who enjoyed playing.

I hold out hope that the Estate will someday release a series of rehearsals (or soundcheck) and a series of aftershows. From the many bootlegs available, these are some of the best documents of Prince's genius - and the talents of whichever band he had formed at the time.

Good call, SA. I've always enjoyed Prince rehearsals, this one included. I love listening to and/or seeing Prince run through a song or even figure out a song in rehearsal. Perhaps my favorite is the nearly hour long "rehearsal" of Soul Psychodelicide (kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5qQZ5JmetOVZ9E). As much as anything, it's Prince fleshing out the song. The 12 minute version that was finally released as part of the SOTT posthumous issue doesn't retain the raw feel of the rehearsal and leaves me missing the rehearsal aspect. The rehearsal is far too long for a reaction video, but I think you (Bryan) would enjoy it. Maybe take a listen on a long walk. As Bryan mentioned, Prince was demanding physically, too. But the payoff was that his bands knew everything inside and out and could respond to any cue at any time. Which brings to mind the old warehouse rehearsal footage of the Revolution. Wendy was in the band, so that puts it around 83 or 84. Fast forward to The Revolution on tour in 2017 and some of those same moves were incorporated in the show.

This song is the lead single from “The Family “album. The same album that has “Nothing compares 2 U”. This a side band of what was leftover from The Time. Prince got bored with them and they disbanded. 😫 Totally awesome album.
@thesolitaryadventurer2 жыл бұрын
I think co-lead singer St Paul Peterson quitting was the major reason The Family disbanded. Prince was spinning too many plates during 1985/86 and his lack of focus on The Family meant they didn't get proper recording contracts in place before the album was due for release. In a perfect world, they would have been signed up and more promotion done before the album was released. I think it was largely Prince's workload in France filming Under The Cherry Moon that stopped this happening. He then spent a fair while adding St Paul into lyrics as part of Mutiny and other songs - singing "St Paul. Punk of the month". I'd say he wasn't bored with them, he was deeply upset at losing Paul from the camp. Just as he had lost Morris, Jesse, Jimmy & Terry, and others.
@thesolitaryadventurer2 жыл бұрын
And the album is excellent regardless of the issues around the band. Prince's demos released as an album would have been as strong as his own Parade album perhaps.
@usagent2252 жыл бұрын
Well, Prince did get bored with the project just like he got bored with “Mazarati”. At the same time, Paul was receiving offers from other labels. Can’t blame him for signing instead of waiting on Prince. I bought Paul’s single “Rich man”. It was 👌. The tragedy is The Time project. I was in high school/ college then. My brother and his friends went to school dressed like Morris Day. Morris still sells out when he tours and it’s not because of purple rain. It’s the first 2 Time albums and his solo stuff.

Please check out "The Family" album, where there is the final version of "The screams of passion". They also recorded again "Nothing compares 2 U" (a song Prince produced for them) under the name fDeluxe (since Prince owned the name of the band, just like The Time are known nowadays under the name The Original 7ven) seven hours and thirteen days after Prince passing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/naWUipumhsdrndE No guitar here, but a string ensemble and a great moment nonetheless. There's also a somewhat hard to find (but it seems to be on Last fm) DMSR 1983 reharsal demo where Prince is joking around and even uses a snippet of Talking Head's "Once in a lifetime".
