My first exposure at age 15 to Ravel's piano music was acquiring a box set of Vlado's complete set of his recordings of Ravel. His interpretations of this music will always be imprinted in my brain.
Contemporary pianists, no matter how "virtuosic" (i.e., no matter how much they have studied Czerny), are simply out of their cultural depth when it comes to performing Ravel. There is only Vlado.

You are correct, ESPECIALLY if they studied Czerny etudes. (Not that he didn't provide us some valuable info on Beethoven.) Yes there have been many cultural changes that influence pianists, not always in a good way.
