It was her choice. That was the desire of her heart. She was very strong in the choices she made. If you have desires that differ then hers good for you. That is the beauty of free will. She choose to embrace the love and care of her Father. She choose to stand firm on what she wanted. She didn’t give into her emotions and the pride of life the lusts of the flesh and it turned out good for her. Rather we give into these things and end up dissatisfied with disease viruses and broken hearts. Self control is a fruit of the spirit. The hypocrisy of supporting people “the truth” all while mocking her love for God her love for others her love for family the love and boldness she had to be honest up front with the man and love for herself to be honest with what she wanted and what she wouldn’t settle for. Consider the love of a father that many of us sadly didn’t get to experience. We don’t understand it.. that is not a reason to mock it but to try to understand it. Now that I have gotten to experience a father love in such a big and beautiful way... I realize I use to reject a fathers love and protection of a man because of my distrust and my misunderstanding of it. Because of things that happened to me and things that I did to myself. Truly a fathers love is such a gift. Sadly so many are are quick to judge rather then to consider. She had every right to make a different choice. She made the choice that was right for her. So many support choice and even become activist for it.... but in this case she is being mocked for her choice... why? Mocking the love of a Father? Mocking the clear choice she made to do things in an unselfish way. She was convicted in her heart. She listened to the conviction of Divine laws written in her heart and on her mind that are there to protect us from what is right and wrong. What could have lead her to a life of bitterness loneliness and regret lead her to Joy hope and a future with a family because she was willing to sacrifice and deny instant gratification. She was willing to let go and trust and not make everything about herself but include the ones who love her and looked out for her best interest. This is wisdom. There is safety in an abundance of Godly council. She was willing to be patient and wait. That’s what love does. It waits. It doesn’t insist on its own way. She was willing to listen and to say no and walk away from something she discerned was not good for her. That takes incredible strength when your grieved about not having love in your life and other men had rejected her. She took a stand against the seductiveness of the unGodly man right away. That takes Guts❣️❣️ She didnt care to do things the way the world and woman of the world are taught to do them. She got rid of the impatient pushy man who didn’t want to wait or didn’t care about things of God or family. He didn’t respect her. He wanted to jump into bed and gratify the flesh. And what then would have been the outcome? And then woman get upset with that when they give in and are left feeling used and abused. Then what? Anger bitterness and hostility towards men!!! For their choices. So many woman who allow this behavior from the beginning and don’t say no for different reasons.. they become bitter and resentful... and some even join movements to attack these men that they didn’t have the courage to say no to from the beginning or because they wanted what they wanted and regret it later when they don’t get it. This is the of self... Gods way is always so much better. We as woman often put ourselves in positions to be taking advantage of. But here we have a woman who isn’t doing that... and she is being mocked for it. It is much more then just a kiss and that is what is so easy we miss. There are emotions... manipulations seductiveness and all those things that are involved in these heated fleshly moments... that is takes quite a bit of strength for her to stand up against and confessing gives you that much Katie strength rather then hiding it and blaming others for it later. She handled it rightly. These sound choices protected a lot of people in the process. The outcome of her choices not only looked after her they considered all those around her. The choices she made gave her a love that is born out of the spirit and not the flesh which is contrary to everything that is good and right.

Side note: why is it with Christian romance movies that the guy has to look at least 15 years older than the girl? The girl always looks under-23 (keyword: looks) while the guy is greying and clearly pushing 40.

Despite acting like a 12-year-old around his out-of-town friends, Stewart appears to be the only decent man in Grace's life. Grace thought she was dating him for over a year. I like to imagine Stewart also thought they were dating for a couple days/weeks. Then, the one time he tried to kiss her, she pulled away and said something like, "I don't want that kind of relationship." Stew took that to mean she just wanted to be friends, so he respected her autonomy and remained friends with her. Either that or the movie is just dumb. I am not sure.

"What did her parents DO to her?" If I had to guess? *SHAME*. Lots and lots of shame. You see that kind of guilt and shame and fear of emotional intimacy in people who received Abstinence-Only Sex Education. After a lifetime of hearing "DO NOT GIVE IN TO LUST OR ELSE YOU'RE A HARLOT, unless you get married", turns out that even after marriage they can't get out of the mindset that lustful feelings are to be blocked out and to be ashamed of. Grace reads to me like someone who's grown up under an oppressive house, with an overly controlling father. I mean sometimes it could be an overbearing mother, but from the mom in this... No, I'm assuming it was the dad.

I wouldn't necessarily blame this mess on abstinence-only sex education. There is a way to teach people that they should save sex for marriage without shaming them for having a sex drive and wanting sex. God created sex and sex is a very good thing. The way this girl was carrying on about kissing her boyfriend was ridiculous. I mean, look, you wouldn't be dating someone if you weren't physically attracted to them. Figure out what your boundaries are and find someone who respects them. At the same time, there is no need to feel guilty about enjoying making out with the person you're dating. She acted like it was all the guy and she had no sexual desire whatsoever. If she has the idea that sexual desire should only start after the wedding, she and her future husband have a difficult road ahead of them.

If that's to be blamed on the parents what would you say to people that have blocked out lustful feelings of their own volition... asking for a friend

Kevin, thank you for being honest, realistic, and erudite about how REAL relationships operate. Movies like this are danger to young women by setting up false and impossible expectations for a partner. Also, I found the dad to be more like a " marriage broker" than a support system. Keep up the good work!

“It was Donald Trump” I died from laughing so hard. Why do Christian movies make dating and relationships harder than they need to be? Its like your not allowed to have feelings or be vulnerable at all until you’re married. Keeping your guard up all the time is not the same as setting boundaries in your relationship.

the thing that pisses me off the most about these bad christian movies is how awful every single character is and how they grossly overdramatise the smallest, most unrealistic 'problems.' like everyone is always crying and depressed over little things and just for once i want to see some emotionless husk of a character in a really difficult situation just to shake things up.

The best guidance I've received for marriage had was understanding how selfishly idolizing what I want can affect my thoughts, actions and behavior toward my spouse , and the need to get over myself and look to her needs. As a sufferer of this debilitating mental illness it makes me really sad and really frustrated. :((

I hate it when people write non-Christians so poorly. Usually they sound quite reasonable and there's ALL types of people out there with different views on dating, and romance. Was this loosely based on a Jane Austen book? Similar things happen in those books, girl thinks she's courting one guy, he leaves and then is found to be engaged to another one, she finds out and is devastated. Older guy who is a friend of the family starts courting her and they end up marrying. It's the plot to "sense and sensibility" basically. It doesn't translate well to a modern story.
@elizabethashley42
@elizabethashley42 7 жыл бұрын
I don't how how I missed the parallels, but you're absolutely right. Considering the fact that Austen's books were more social commentary than romances, the plot points REALLY don't translate well.

True, especially since this movie seemed to combine both girls' stories in that book into one story. The older sister was talking to a guy and he didn't tell her that he was basically engaged to another girl. She finds out, he leaves, and he is able to get out of the engagement when the other girl decides to marry his brother. The older friend of the family was interested in the younger girl. He knew that she wasn't interested in him and contented himself with being her friend. She got sick and he started coming over to the house to see about her and spend time with her. It was through them spending time together that she fell in love with and married him. He didn't go over her head and get anybody's blessing to marry her. As a grown woman, she made up her own mind.

"How do you know if the shoe fits unless you try it on?" Um... well, for starters, you spend more than 15 months with a guy. The honeymoon phase can last up to three years, so you need to spend a lot of time dating in order to find out if you can handle being bored with your partner. Second, it's not a sin to spend time at their house and even being a little intimate. Sure, as a Christian, sex is off the table. But kissing and hugging and cuddling are important intimate affairs that help you communicate sexually and help you figure out how you're going to act and react when you actually consummate. And spending a lot of time at his place (or having him at yours, depending on who is moving into whom's home) and doing things together like grocery shopping, yard work, cleaning, and cooking will help you "try the shoe on to see if it fits" without you making a huge commitment. Even if you only do so once or twice a week, spending full days with your other to see how you spend large amounts of time with them is possible without moving in with them. Seriously, what kind of therapist is this woman? Who gives their patients advice that can potentially make their lives worse if it doesn't work out?
@wesleybrock315
@wesleybrock315 6 жыл бұрын
And really sex is only off the table for Christians if they decided to adhere to the cultural rules of long dead people who created those rules as a means of commoditizing their daughters. With all the ways available to prevent pregnancy and disease there really is little to no risk of "trying the shoe on" as it was so crudely put. I mean what a shit therapist.

...MAN this movie is cringey, and I grew up in a household that encouraged this sort of behavior. My father expected me to do the very same thing, and told me as much with a laundry list of rules. I could not touch a date. Hugs were not allowed. I could not allow a date to kiss me (outside of my hand), ect. He expected any potential partner to approach him first long before he took my opinion into consideration. ...at first. Time went by. His behavior meant the prospect of bringing ANYBODY home to my paranoid, world-weary, and intimidating father was daunting, no matter how morally upright said boy might have been. I mean, my dad met my senior prom date at the door with his 10 gauge in hand, and he LIKED the guy. He was robbing me of my agency in the matter, and he had to learn to let me make my own mistakes. Yeah, I was his only child, and his only daughter, but I still had a decent set of brains in my head. If he and mom did a decent job raising me, I'd be fine. Dad relaxed considerably as I got older, and left me the choice to bring home the dude to meet him or not, trusting my judgement over his own. I met my husband entirely independent of him, aforementioned senior prom guy of all people. He got the message, and I feel like the dad in this movie never got that far. Respect your own daughter's judgement, dude. Even if she makes mistakes, they're hers. A lot of Christan films seem super anti-dating, and that bothers me a ton.

I just hope that she’ll be able to grow out of it-or at least that my dad will allow her to make choices for herself.

This is great!! Love your advice and comments in this review. I and almost every other girl I know who was raised with the relationship advice advocated by this movie, have changed our minds. It might sound great in a Christian dating book (ahem, sorry, courting book ;)) or fictional story like Princess Cut but it almost never pans out well in real life. I and all of my girl friends who are happily married feel like we honored Christ in our dating/engagements, but we all learned that the homeschool-y patriarchal courting system doesn’t usually work in real life. If you’ve got the Holy Spirit inside you directing you in the way you should go, you don’t need a list of rules (or micromanaging parents like in the film) telling you exactly how to have a relationship. Loved this review Kevin; keep it up.

17:15 Exactly! Thrusting your expectations in the middle of dating someone just causes a lot of grief on both sides. Before I started dating my now-husband, we had a long conversation about what we expected out of a relationship. In a funny twist, he was the one that offered to not kiss me until we were married, but I wasn’t having that, haha. Discussing end goals is very important!

The extreme guilt wrought on by heavy handed youth groups, movies, and ESPECIALLY overbearing parents like this will stay with this girl for SOOOOO long! Being safe and following biblical guidance is one thing, but understanding more practical reasons WHY they're guidelines to begin with (i.e. possible reasons for "no sex til marriage", in my opinion, may have come from the fact that sleeping with people who aren't your spouse, someone who you know more about sexually and healthwise, will put you more at risk for contracting STIs/STDs, unplanned pregnancies, etc. and the fact that it's such an intimate, personal exchange that many people may be particularly deeply emotionally hurt if the relationship doesn't go well) and what they mean in the context of a WELL-ROUNDED life following God, not a strict legalistic guilt-driven Pharisees life, would do SO much more for young adult (and teen) Christians. Young Christians NEED to know the whole picture instead of just "don't do thing or else, and you're a tainted, horrible, dirty SINNER if you do the said thing and can never be repaired >:(" so they make better informed decisions and don't feel so burdened with unneccessary guilt that JESUS has TAKEN from them once they gave their lives over to Him! This isn't to say Christians won't sin or be guilty for bad actions, but that the black and white view of what a relationship should be and what happens to someone if they don't fit the perfect mold is so incredibly discrediting of Jesus being there to forgive and to guide people, and that EVERY person still has every right to make their own decisions. Thank you so much for your dating advice, too. Everything about this review was so helpful...and also hilarious. XD

I am so confused by this movie... One thing we should highlight (even as people w/o kids) is that although our parents and elders are wise, they are not infallible. Every piece of advice we give is also sent with the hope that we didn't guide the person wrong. In this movie the Father was 100% "right" with 0 fear he was wrong (most Christian movies are like that of course though lol). What really matters is that you escaped Kevin, CONGRATS!!!

For real. This movie isn't just bad, it's not just stupid. It's genuinely promoting the same ideas that caused me way too many years of guilt, doubt, and struggle with myself and my faith. I THOUGHT WE'D MOVED PASSED THIS BY NOW! How are there still people promoting this?!?!?! (Even Josh Harris has publicly apologized for IKD. It’s so true. These books tell people to be ashamed of their sexuality, which is completely a-biblical. While I certainly believe there are moments where it is inappropriate, in the end your sexuality is not a disease. It’s a poor propaganda that Christian authors propitiate, and it has to stop.
@patrickd8654
@patrickd8654 6 жыл бұрын
“These books tell people to be ashamed of their sexuality, which is completely a-biblical.” I might have read a different translation than you did. Here are some of the things the Bible has to say about sexuality: Menstruation is shameful. A woman on her period is to be avoided, then pay a fine. (Leviticus 15:19-31) If a woman is not a virgin on her wedding night, she is to be put to death. (Deuteronomy 22:13-21) If men have sex with each other, they are to be put to death. (Leviticus 20:13) If a man fantasizes about a woman who is not his wife, this is a sin comparable to adultery. (Matthew 5:28) Self-mutilation is an appropriate remedy to temptation. (Matthew 5:29-30) Divorce is categorically wrong. (I wonder how many people stay in abusive relationships because of this.) (Matthew 5:31-32) I think there are many Christians who are “sex-positive.” I just don’t agree that shame or stigma about sex is “completely a-biblical.”

Wow. It's amazing how this inadvertently promotes things it doesn't mean to. Mostly that women need male presences in their lives in order to feel worthwhile, and that exploring a sexual identity of any kind needs to be drowned in guilt. I've never seen such idiotic, dithering women, who are so sheltered they're completely unable to protect themselves and would probably blame themselves for the rape and sexual assault that happens to 1/3rd of their population. The main girl has no motivation or self-confidence and pretty much exists as an extension of her father. That is ... not too far from some real life Christians I've met. How far we have fallen. Your heart is very sick. Mine once was too. Jesus healed and delivered me and made me New. He can you too. My independence drove me to almost lose my life. You have no idea what your missing out on because of your unwillingness to think outside of the way the world has brainwashed you. I know because I use to be like you. All the lies and wise in your own eyes thinking is bondage and pride. It is self will and self absorbed. God made male and female As Jesus said. Don’t even try it with me. I have been on both sides.. I know the stark contrast of life with Christ and life without.... so go ahead and call me Jesus Freak all your want... thats what a sick heart does. It mocks and scoffs. I already lived that sick life you described... the one that is being celebrated in pride... it lead me to be near to death. Bedridden and homebound for several years. Your spiritual sickness has consequences. Indulging the flesh has nothing to do with love... on the contrary. Mock the movies all you want scoffer. It takes strength to confess where you fall short. It takes strength to deny the flesh. Anyone can eat like a pig.... it takes strength to deny yourself gratification. Anybody can take a tantrum and live for self... it takes a real woman to deny self. You bought int societies bill off goods and have fallen prey to the master deceivers plan to destroy the life that’s been given you. You conform to the patterns of the world and enable sickness of the heart. You call good evil. Repent in Jesus name. And then ppl wonder why the world is in the state it’s in. Just as Jesus said it wound he nexuses of calloused hardened prideful hearts that love the darkness more then the light. Whoever reads this.. turn back to the living God before it’s to late. The Tribulation is close. We are just in the beginning of sorrows. Repent and be set free and made whole in Jesus name. Gird your loins and keep your lamp lit Stay close to Jesus

Droemar You don’t allow me anything. We both get the same choice. We choose to reject or deny. We choose to follow him or don’t. You get the same choice I do. Seek Jesus or live by rituals and traditions of men. It is evident to anyone with half a brain that God gave them to see what is in the hearts of men who are burning Bibles in the streets of Portland. A manifestation of unrepentant hearts the sin virus that leads to death and it’s judgment. They hated Jesus and they hate me just as he said they would As I hold fast and firm to do the will of my Father. He came to destroy the works of the devil and expose the evil deeds of men. Evil will have its day. But it’s time is short. Jesus called this self righteousness of the prideful Bible Burners White washed Tombs dead mans bones Brood of Vipers. And he choose to die for them.. why? Love. Hard hearts reject his love. The Bible burning pride parade can march all day long. Not one of them will die for you and not one of them will be raised from the dead. Not one of them will be raised to new life as they continue in their willful rejection hostility and rebellion to Gods one and only son. All things pass way. Gods word never passes away. There will be no death and decay where I’m going. The New Jerusalem. God doesn’t want anyone to go where they dont want to. At this point it is evident who is choosing Jesus and who is rejecting him. Who is for him and who is against him. The weeding out is happening. He didn’t want robots. He gave us free will. We have a second chance to make a wise choice. You can read about it all over the internet these days just as the Bible said we would. Clever words and ideas won’t change who Jesus is and what Jesus came to do. It won’t change the account we will all have to give. And professing to be wise they became foolish in their thinking. Believe on him or don’t. It is that simple. He is brilliant. Of course many people form their opinions about him without ever taking the time to truly get to know him. The master deceiver is their daddy. And so Even Evil was designed for what he purposed. Wrap your finite mind around that one. And as in Romans his eternal power and divine nature is clearly seen so that people are without excuse.

If they were Christian, and truly believed in the Death and Resurrection of Christ, and accepted His Grace, then every single last one of them is in heaven. Which seems unfair to us, as humans, given the wrongdoing that they committed, but God sees all sin as separating us from Him. Therefore, Christ’s grace extends to all of us, no matter our sins. Not the answer any of us want to hear, but it’s the reality of the situation.

As one of the women who watch this show, yeah it's not cool to stalk a girl like the barista/Jared guy. It's a trope called "stalking for love", and though it's framed as a romantic gesture in media, IRL the police get called. I wish movies and tv didn't continually reinforce the idea that when a women says "I'm not interested", she really means "try harder".
@klg9549
@klg9549 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately the reverse is true too. When I was a teen I thought if a guy rejected me I thought I could "still convince him someday" because so many movies and media have the main pair not be totally compatible at first. Stupid, I know.

This movie reminded me of what a ton of different churches/retreats kept pushing to not date and just wait... those people are hitting their 40’s and still not married haha btw the book what I wish I knew before I got married is a really great book!! But I’ve read others and they can get really awful lol

The creators of this movie must have read both "I kissed Dating Goodbye" and "created to be his help meet". I swear this is how most of my homeschool friends pictured meeting their husbands. (Literally shows up at their country home and their dad loves them!). I don't think any book really helped that much in my marriage...maybe the Bible? I did like "a good girl's guide to great sex". I definitely wouldn't consider it a legalistic book but it's been a few years since I read it so my opinion my be different now but it did help me let go of a lot of guilt I had been feeling about my past and actually enjoy that part of my marriage but ultimately it wasn't really the book. It was God's forgiveness and having good communication with my husband that really helped

I thought a princess cut was a kind of circumcision technique. She won't even KISS until she's engaged? OMG. It's too bad Protestants don't have nuns, because that's where Grace should have gone. The guy who wrote it, Paul Munger, writes books for homeschoolers. "Looks like we're going to have an early harvest festival." So the harvest festival is based on when this SINGLE FAMILY gets their crops in? The whole town waits for them to bring in their crops? Then why don't they all come over to help them to bring in the crops? Wait, what happened with the ring Clint was burying?

1. Princess cut isn't a type of diamond, it is a kind of cut that can by applied to gem stones including diamonds & colored stones. (the title is meant as a double meaning referencing scriptures that call godly woman value above rubies/colored gems. The title is actually the most clever thing about this movie and it's totally wasted on this horrible film) 2. Really appreciate your remarks on wolfs in sheeps clothing in churches. This is true of women too.

I would love to be a fly on the wall while the people who made this movie discuss the 6:55 scene where she finds out her 'boyfriend' is engaged to someone else. I don't understand how they could write that scene, let alone film it, without realizing what you brought up about it. Is it because he's non-religious and this is just some "people with no religion are so immoral" thing? I genuinely don't understand it at all. I really want to know the thought process that went into this "twist".

She's got Boundaries in Dating in that pile.... have the filmmakers READ THAT BOOK?!?! Actually, that's just what Grace needs to read. And her parents. And basically everyone in this movie. Or just start with, well, any of the Henry Cloud books. By the way, I highly recommend the Henry Cloud & John Townsend books. I mean for real. There's some reality to this character, and not in a healthy way (I'm an I-Kissed-Dating-Goodbye raised homeschooler.) Those books have been hugely transformative in my life and relationships. Extra note - Cloud says in the forward to the dating book, that he wrote it after people started asking him about IKD, and he was like, "uh, no, that's stupid and going to cause you more issues than solve anything." So after being asked enough, he decided Christian world needed a book about dating by someone who actually has some credentials.

Right?!? What I love about the Cloud/Townsend books is they draw from personal experience, AND years of clinical therapy and all the patients they've seen over the years. They also fully convinced me that the suspicion I was raised to view Christian clinical psychology with was waaaay off base. (oh conservative Christian world... :P)

FearlessAstridHofferson, Exactly. The biggest problem with I kissed dating goodbye was that it was all theory, with no experience. Josh Harris was dreaming of the perfect girl and figured “this is how I would treat her” but in the end it falls short, and is actually damaging and unhealthy.

Oh man! This is one of the funniest reviews I have seen yet! By the way, back in 1998 the Christiano Brothers made this wonderful hour-long film (based on a true story, no less!) called "Pamela's Prayer" that tells a "similar" story and does it wayyyyyyyyyy better! It was (along with my parents advice and guidance) one of the most instrumental things in my life to make the personal choice to not date at all. With anyone. Does this mean I don't have friends who happen to be guys, or something? No! But, I chose a long time ago not to go out with (as a date) a guy, or have a boyfriend.
