Printing on fabric with gelliplate DEMO

I have been asked to show my process printing on fabric and here is the DEMO.

I've been playing around with printing on fabric and found that fabric is awesome for "pick up" prints. I let several layers of paint and prints dry on my plate (I do this gradually, building up design and print) My gel plate is on an acrylic base so I can flip it over to get an idea of what I'm going to get. When I'm satisfied, I put a final layer of paint (or gel medium if I don't want to add another colour) and apply my fabric to it. Then I flip the plate over to let the paint soak into the fabric, then flip it over and let it dry completely. This may take a few hours to overnight. When I peel the fabric off (actually I get better results when I do the opposite and peel the gel plate off my paper or fabric. Bending the gel plate helps it to release more paint) ALL of the paint comes off my plate and it's super clean! The result is rather cool too as the fabric has a smooth leathery feel a bit like oilcloth. With metallic paints it's quite spectacular. If it doesn't work well it's because either there wasn't enough paint or medium in the final layer or it hadn't completely dried.

Nice tutorial! Wondering if you let any layers dry before adding more paint? It looks like you just keep going in wet paint?

I wash gently and dry in a dryer. The heat sets the paint.

Meredith, I love your painted fabric. I have done a lot of it on my Gelli plates with acrylics and with inks. I too, make my own stencils and stamps now. Since you have the beautiful fabric, what will you make with it?
