Start Gelli Printing on Fabric Part2

In Part 2 I take the background fabrics I made in Part 1and use some simple techniques to make patterned fabric.

Wow, I am so happy to have stumbled across Part 1 & 2 whilst looking for gelli printing on fabric. Very pleased on many levels, basic and easy to follow, just what I need, your Australian, even better lol and then the icing on the cake you said embroidery and quilting. Now to have a look at the rest of your videos and drag my gelli plate out and dust of the paints and make use of our hot weather coming next week to get stuff dry. Thank you

Nice demo. Is is necessary to heay-set the printed fabric? And do you find that prints on poly/cotton prints are weaker in strength or that once washed several times that the colour washes away more quickly?

Thanks for watching and your questions. I do heat set anything that is going to be washed. I mainly use my fabrics for quilting, so they only really have light washes. I haven't noticed any difference in the print quality between polyester and cotton fabric. If I was printing for a garment then I would use either fabric paint or definitely a textile medium with any general acrylic. I would heat set both. I always wash my printed fabrics in a mesh bag and on a short cycle, not a regular washing cycle. Hope this helps.

Hi!! Thank you for you’re tutorial! Do you use acrylics on fabrics and is it possible to wash the fabric without loosing the paint or Color’s ?

Hi Esther, thanks for your question. These are all acrylic paints that I have used. There are a variety of brands that I have used, including Jo Sonja, Matisse, and Golden to name a few. I have washed all these samples in a 15 minute cold cycle using liquid detergent without any loss of colour. I have used any of these pieces on clothing so I cannot comment on how long they would last. I would expect some loss of colour if they were washed frequently on a normal wash cycle. That's something I will have to explore further. I use these fabrics for embroidery or quilts that are not going to be washed frequently.

What type of paint can you use? Does it have to be fabric paint?

Hi Catherine, I don't use any fabric paint in my videos. I have only used acrylic paints that you can find in art shops, craft shops or even $2 shops. The critical thing if you want to use acrylic paint is that you may want to use a 'textile medium' which you mix with the acrylic paint to make the fabric more flexible and more washable. If you do have fabric paint then I would go ahead and use that, you can achieve the same results with the fabric paint.
