I print my photos (rarely, but I've been wanting to print more, and this video is certainly motivation to do so) because they look so much better on paper. I find that when I show people my photos on a printed medium, they seem to appreciate the photo more than if the see it on a screen. The thing is, we see hundreds of photos on a screen on a daily basis, but we don't see, touch and feel actual prints that often... so they stand out a lot more when they're printed, and generally speaking, will get a better reaction from people than if they're on a screen.

I love printing photos, as I enjoy "reliving the moment" I made them. I don't have a great printer so I struggle with the right colour settings etc. But it's still nice to look at these pictures I made myself. (Rather than going to IKEA and by stuff)

On the odd occassion I have had an image printed, it is because it is an image I am proud of, and I just want to show it off. Selfish and self centred maybe but if I created something I'm proud of I want it to be appreciated.

Hi like you I started out many years ago printing B&W. What an experience. Photography for me is so much more than pointing a camera. I love landscape so it's about finding the location the time of day the weather the walk the setting up. Moving on to take take the picture coming home to see what you captured using lightroom to process. Then.... printing finding the frame finding the spot hanging it up and then everyone I pass I remember finding the spot seeing the light being our door and the feel of the day. Why wouldn't we print for that eh? Just magic like watching a B&W appear it never fails to thrill

The ink tank system appears to be much better than the cartridge system kzbin.infoUgkxciSwynMJ7PnUvvx11rewiu-yFBkZTl53 and a lot cheaper to run. The machine was easy to set up. A small point but I thought they'd be a USB cable included to help with the set up but there was none. I've been using it now for a few weeks and it seems like a good product and superior to my previous printers which were all troublesome HP machines.

It's the final step as to why you captured the image the image in the first place. The beauty of trying different paper which can also give a totally different feeling and depth to the image is so special. Online it's all about likes for a brief moment in time that are easily forgotten but with a print it lasts a lifetime.

Great video with some great tips. Like many, for a while, I just stored my photo's on my hard drive and looked at them occasionally on my PC screen. I do now print, and for me the benefits of printing are that I get more enjoyment from them and so do my family. Prints, especially those that are hung on the wall are a reminder of memories that we've enjoyed over the years, especially those prints that include my children.

I recently had a photobook made online to share images I took at my sister's graduation with family and friends. Watching the difference in peoples reactions to holding physical photos as opposed to seeing them on a screen is simply amazing. The experience from that has encouraged me to have some of my landscapes printed out, even if only to stick on the wall in my study! Here's to more of those reactions from other people

Ok, I know this video is a year old but I’m just finding it now. First, thanks so much for the information on the photo paper. I love having a brilliant physical print in my hands. So much better than 3-second glimpses in a slide. But I especially love knowing that something I captured is adorning someone’s wall and bringing them pleasure...having a little piece of me and my memories in their home. Thank you for your well-thought-out and easy to follow videos. Cheers

I got my first camera when I was about 10 years old. I immediately started to photograph "fine art" photos and some of them turned up really nicely. How ever the film was experience back then, I was a lot ahead of my time and no one didn't understand what I was trying to achieve. Now, about 25 years later I got a great camera gear and started photographic again. I have great support from family and friends, they want me to print my photos to have on their walls. I have printed a few photos (outsourced) and I do agree that the feeling to see the picture printed on a wall is amazing. I'm now looking to get a printer at home for more amazing feeling to holding my pictures in my hand. Thank you for the hints and tips.. not only from this video. Great video. I print my best image's and hang them on the walls around my home because I feel images that just get left on your harddrive just get neglected. Yeah OK from time to time you look back over your image's but if you have prints hanging on your walls they evoke memories and moments in your life plus it's nice to get comments from friends and family when they realise that the photo they like was an image that you captured.

Great video Nigel, not many people talk about the printing process like you have in this video, its really helped answer some questions i had floating around my head. I have printed a few of my photos in the past and love the texture and look of the images afterward. Paper choice i feel can really make or break an image and you really have to consider what is going to work well for the image being printed, i think i spent a good 45mins at the printers deciding on the right paper lol. Its something that i would love to do more in the future and will! As you mentioned in your video; just to see an image in different media helps your eye see new things in the image that you could improve on and change, colour, tonality, shadow and composition are all things that you seem to get complacent with when looking on a screen. Printing images gives me a sense of pride and completes the whole process of that image. Im my opinion a photo isn't finished until its been printed and mounted.

When you talk to someone in person face to face (not through a technological device), you can see every detail of his/her gestures, there is a much intimate interaction, fisical approach, there is no "one click" escape from it so there is a kind of commitment to that moment, to that attention and to what you are seeing, hearing, listening and touching. Is a one to one comunication. Is real. Same thing happens with printing. So hard to explain in words because is a very intrinsic feeling.... BTW, is the first time I see your channel... very neat job. I´ll follow from now on. Thanks for sharing.

Nigel, this is wonderful material, well produced and presented! I have recently begun printing my photos more for some of the same reasons you have given. For me, I learn a lot about the subtleties and details of an image from the print. This has helped me hone in on aspects of the photo that really matter, and that draw the viewer in deep. Finally, I have found that printing to produce a tangible object - something to hold in your hand - completes the creative cycle and gives a sense of connection to the image that doesn't occur when it is simply a digital artifact. It also seems to help connect me to photography as an art form, being a digital shooter in this age where prints are more rare. Thanks for your thoughtful and considered information. I'll be looking forward to learning and seeing more here along the way on my own print journey.

Nigel - brilliant instructional video, from which I will take many of the points covered. I , like you, used to print B&W images using Ilford & Fuji film in my then, 35mm cameras. The enlarged results I have to this day and will often take them out for a renewed look. Since turning to digital format I for some time lost the need to print my images and always felt something was lacking by just viewing and sharing them on monitors, tablets etc. I realised lately that much of the joy of photography is have a tactile product to view whether in book or single print form. I will now convert many of my more favourite images to a hard format & hopefully rekindle my interest in photography as a whole.

Great stuff as always, Nigel. Interesting to see the thought process behind printing on different papers. it's not an area I've really considered before because I'm not really in a position to print my own images at the moment, but your shot of the leaning tree benefits so much from the cotton-paper. I've only had prints made for friends and family who have asked for certain images, and the stress of reediting those images to make sure they're perfect for print is so far beyond just slapping them up on social media, but they're the resultant images that I'm most proud of for sure! Keep the vlogs coming!

I just love the feel and look of a print. It is so different from online images. I usually use Red River paper and have been happy with them. I think I will see if Fotospeed has a sample pack and give them a try. Thanks for another great video.

I like to print my pictures as there is nothing better than being able to handle and share a real tactile thing, storing on a computer or on web is all very well but you just can't beat holding a print.

Great channel by the way. I dont print my own yet but would really like to. I would really like to go on a printing workshop to learn more. This is why i loved this post from you, you just demystified the subject with ease, thank you. I at present print my work and primarily give them away to people who have expressed an interest in my work. It makes for a very personal gift for someone, its part of me. When somebody holds a print in their hands i wish i knew what they were thinking as i know my feelings of the shot are mainly flashbacks to the day i took it etc but the connection for them if totally different emotion. love it when people send me photos of things hanging in peoples homes. I need to hang more in my own home as you suggested. Thank you for the considerable time and effort you put into these posts.

A great look into home printing, thank you Nigel. I am guilty of not printing my work all the time due to lack of funds. However, on the occasion that I have printed using an outside lab I absolutely love seeing my photos up on the wall. When people come in and remark on the shot it makes it all worth it. Tony

Thanks Anthony. It can be expensive but a lot of labs have great offers that are worth looking out for.

Another fantastic video Nigel. So why do I print my images? It just simply feels more real to me. Whilst I love saving my images on my hard drive, sharing them on Facebook and saving them as screen savers and computer wallpapers, a picture doesn't feel really finished until I've printed it off, held it in my hands and seen the "real thing". I suppose I just love the tactileness of a printed image more than a digital version!

I personally print photos just for the pleasure of seeing my work in print plus i think people are more interested in printed material than looking at digital images all the time. Interesting to see the different range of papers out there as i normally just use Canon paper for my printing needs.

Nigel thanks for the video, wonderful thoughts on printing! Shows the excitement and wonders of print making. For me the processing and printing of images is a magical experience. I as well started in traditional darkroom B/W. As for my digital printing experience I have had excellent results printing with Ilford Prestige Gold Fibre Silk. Keep up the great work! I enjoy your imagery.

Hi Nigel. I know this is a relatively old video but you mention 3000 subscribers. You have come a long way since you are now at 264k subscribers. Well done. Love your channel. I watch you every week. I have learned so much that I may now describe myself as a novice. Keep up the great work. As you can see even your “older” segments are fantastic.

Nigel, you’re a great communicator and your enthusiasm for photography is catching! I had a cheap Canon Pixma printer but the cartridges ran out after just a few prints. It was so expensive that it put me right off. Also, the whole business of calibration and colour matching seemed so complicated. Maybe it would be easier if I bought a pro printer. Loved the rocky road!

I am not an experienced photography, but when I am pleased with my image I just feel so excited and proud as the print is produced. I tried sending them away, but soon decided to buy my own printer simply because I felt the whole process from finding the location, to taking the image to then printing it made it uniquely my own

Lovely video, Nigel. Nothing beats a high-end print when it comes to showcasing your best work. I personally love Hahnemühle's FineArt Baryta because of its subtle texture and colour rendition, it truly makes my photos stand out. Great to have found you on here, just subscribed today! Do give us a shout if you're ever down the Langhe wine region in northwestern Italy, UNESCO's heritage site and a stunning location for intimate landscape photography.

Nigel - New subscriber and I am impressed with your fresh view on photography. I work for a well known photo printer, but I have not been happy with the quality and what my images look like after printing. The way you spoke about the paper was almost romantic - obviously you know your paper and what the paper does to the overall finished product. Printing is a very personal experience - I think that once you send it to a lab or send it to your printer that cost is realized (for better or worse) - it takes a lot of trial and error to finally stumble upon what you described in this video. Once printed- it is great to have something physical to share and talk about with friends and family. If you could - maybe you already have in which I apologize - but can you recommend and describe in your experience what the paper types do for your image (beyond your semi and matte options). If you look at Bay Photo Labs they have dozens of paper options - where does one start? Thanks for inspiring me to not give up on my printing journey.

I subscribe and watch all your videos, I have learnt so much about photography by doing this, but the video about printing is just superb anyone with half a brain cannot fail to learn from it, the articulate way you put across all the info is great, you say things in a way people can instantly understand also the info on photographic papers is invaluable to us hobbyist photographers , I love printing my photographs because the depth of colour and detail can only come across in the printed article, you see different thing every time you walk past the pic hanging on the wall, there is no substitute for this. more vids and info please as I am getting completely absorbed with this wonderful pastime. regards, Colin.

To be quite honest, I haven't done any printing yet, but it's high on my list, just need to get to it one day, just been too busy and sort of intimidated really - never have done it, the whole process seems so complicated. But I'll get to it and this video really made me start thinking about it again.

Just subscribed. Great channel and content. I'm disabled but get my prints from Costco mostly and other outlets when funds allow. I have printed in some form for over 30 year. For me is a moment In time to be captured, remembered and enjoyed. I just love photography and even with my lack of funds and problems walking sometimes, it's funny how I always seem to get by! I think I enjoy the whole concept of life in this way and photography helps me record it.... in its entirety be it a good day or bad. Its never ever about money.......I hate money. Enjoy finding your channel....... regards from Scotland

I printed my photos (A3 or 3+) since many years, and I like really this work, looking the results, adjusting the dark zones or the colors, .. It is very pleasant. Unfortunately my Epson R1900 is out of order, I immediately bought a Canon Pro 10S but it has a serious problem as it believes that no cartridges are inside; I will certainly exchange it as it is brand new. I can't imagine stop printing my photos, it makes me happy. Even in the 80's I was accustomed to make my Cibas. Doing his own photos is great, I would recommand it to anyone. It can't be challenged by only seeing the screen neither looking at diapos. Many thanks for this your vidéo, your considerations about the paper, mat, glossy, .. I prefer too mat paper, but it could certainly be discuted. Cordially, Milos PS : I bought too a Nikon Coolscan 9000ED, to scan the 135 or the 120. I love too the argentic photos, even if sometimes I use digital cameras.

I often forget about printing my images but every once in a while I'll send off to get my favourites printed - being able to physically hold them and study them motivates me to get out and take more (& hopefully better) photos! Maybe when I graduate and find a job I'll be able to afford a nice printer like you've got there to make the whole process that little bit quicker :P
