I'm guessing that jails/prisons offering medications was unheard of when you went in. Jails offering detox meds is a new thing. In recent years, prisoners have successfully sued because opioid dependency is considered a medical condition. So, basically the courts have compelled institutions to offer it. So, it's a matter of the state/county deciding it's more expensive to be sued than it is to offer the medications.

@@JessicaKent that's a me thing to do also. Lol. I just watched a really good news story/mini-documentary on it in the last couple weeks. That's how I knew this. It's somewhere here on you tube, lol. I'll see if I can find it. I'm not sure every jail/prison is on board, but the good news is that the results have been positive so far, so it's only going to get more difficult for the institutions who aren't on board to justify not providing it. It was a great video. Have a good day as well!

I work in blood banking, and honestly I never even considered the (pretty obvious, in hindsight) fact that prisons have medical centers in them and use blood products and perform blood transfusions too. I heard about our org transporting some platelets to a prison (platelet transfusions are oftentimes done for people undergoing chemotherapy) and I realized that I had never even considered that a prison inmate could be battling cancer. It opened my eyes so much to my own ignorance, and to the fact that I had not been recognizing prison inmates as full people. Of course people in prison have healthcare needs; they're just people who have been charged with breaking a law. It really horrified me to realize that that had never occurred to me, and how that spoke to how I used to think about people in prison. It was even more shocking I think because for a long time I've considered myself a big proponent of healthcare as a right and of improving healthcare... but I had never even given a thought to an entire section of the population who too often have their healthcare needs ignored or under-served. I spoke to a blood donor once, while asking him to come in and donate to help combat an extreme shortage of his blood type this past summer. He told me he was a corrections officer, and he would only come donate if I promised him the blood wouldn't be sent to a prison. He told me that he "disagrees" with the "lifestyle" prison inmates lead (you mean the lifestyle of being in prison????) and that he believes they don't deserve access to blood transfusions. This guy is directly in charge of inmates' lives and he straight-up admitted-no sugarcoating, zero shame, to a total stranger-that he doesn't think they deserve to live! What the fuck! This is basic life-saving medical care! And he thinks they don't deserve it, categorically, because they committed and/or were held liable for a crime. That blew my mind and even further showed me how fucked up the way we view prison inmates and ex-convicts is. I have so much respect for what you're doing with this channel. When I started watching, I just thought it was interesting to get some more perspective. But I've realized over more time watching your videos how incredibly important what you're doing is, how important it is for people who have been to prison and for recovered addicts to have a voice and for the human rights violations that too often occur in prisons to be talked about openly.

I'm so excited to watch you crush all your goals in 2020, girl! ***Warning: this is going to be a long comment!*** This video hits so close to home. One of my closest friends lost her husband due to mismanaged meds and malpractice inside of prison. He had a terrible case of Chron's. They refused to give him meds in the beginning -- once they finally gave them to him, they never gave him the right ones or the right amounts. They refused his special dietary needs. His wife had to fight the system from day one -- sometimes they would work with her after 10 phone calls up the chain, sometimes they wouldn't. With less than 18 months left on his sentence, they left him w a football sized, open wound in his stomach, kept transferring him from the hospice facility back to the gen pop facility and he wound up dying from 4 different co-infections. It was excruciating to experience with her bc she had absolutely no control. When the family had to make the decision to pull him off of life support, he didn't pass immediately. They weren't allowed to stay past "normal visiting hours." No one was being belligerent or out of line, they simply asked to stay so he didn't have to die alone. Every cop in the hospital stormed the room and told the family they had to leave right then or they were all going to jail. WHAT was the security risk? The man was LITERALLY in the process of dying. Local media and legal got involved (that's the LAST thing a corrupt warden wants!) and she was granted permission to go back. She didn't make it in time and he wound up dying alone. I'm sharing this bc this story isn't a "one off" instance, it's not a case of a bad doctor or hospital, this is the norm in US jails and prisons! Thank you for bringing this issue to light and talking about it on your channel. Prison administration hides behind "safety and security" and uses it as an excuse to be barbaric. What's the thrill? I'm with you -- its jail! I get it should be inconvenient but basic medical needs should be met. Imagine if we treated ANIMALS the way we treat prisoners in our country? There would be thousands of organizations on the steps of the white house raising hell. Unless you've experienced it -- or have fought for a loved one who has -- you genuinely have no idea how corrupt it is. Okay, I'm getting down off the soap box now!

hi Jessica, I’m not one to ever comment on youtube videos but I found your channel a few months ago and have been hooked ever since. I work in substance use epidemiology research with a specific focus on those involved in the criminal justice system. i have no personal experience with jail or prison but your videos have really helped me connect the subject matter i work with professionally to real people and experiences. it’s one thing to know on an intellectual level that childhood trauma and economic scarcity tends to intersect with substance use and addiction and that the US criminal justice system mostly exacerbates these things instead of healing them but hearing you describe your lived experiences as someone who has gone through it, detoxed in jail, spent time in prison, etc. is so enlightening. thank you for sharing your story. ❤️ i was especially struck in this video by how closely my stay in a mental hospital after a suicide attempt mirrored your description of the way suicidal inmates are treated in prison. both systems are so broken and desperately need to change.

Your channel is such a refreshing change from the annoying, self-indulgent vlogs that we can't take any information/inspiration from. I love learning about your experiences.

When I was detoxing off heroin in jail I made the mistake of telling the nurses how I was feel like killing myself from the withdrawal and I had to detox in a safe room naked
@stinestorm3 жыл бұрын
Oh noooo 🤭 I’m so sorry man, that’s just ... beyond inhumane. I can’t even imagine. I’ve detoxed off H several times and it’s horrible under the best of circumstances --naked in a safe room? Omg.. Hope you recovered. Best of thoughts to u.

Oh how I wish this video came out a few days ago. I was literally on another channel where people in the comment section were ALL saying that prisoners get the BEST medical and dental care all on tax payer's money..
@JessicaKent5 жыл бұрын
Really? ... my guess is the people saying that..have never been to prison
@redvorchannel5 жыл бұрын
Merncat75 it is because they hear about people getting sex changes and shit like that in prison. So they get it in their head that ALL prisons are the same and that if someone could get a sex change they must have the best care ever in prison smdh. I have to ignore those people unless they are willing to listen and learn.

@@redvorchannel sadly, most people already have their minds made up that they are right and I don't have the energy to argue so I usually just direct them to this channel and a few others..

Oh God there were SO many people I was locked up with who went through absolute agony and dental hell resulting from subpar, underfunded care in correctional facilities. People would be screaming in pain and foaming green infection at the mouth and jail dentist finally gave amoxicillin and MAYBE 2 Tylenol. Love you Jess -- I'm currently binge-watching your channel to catch up! 😘

I hope that since you have been locked up most prisons/jails have changed the rules pertaining to women and post-baby, periods and even prenatal care. Were the guards mostly men or people with no kids?? I do not care what the crime is or was; post-baby women need special care...period.

3:12 - 3:15 - That's usually with plenty of strings attached. For example, the overwhelming majority of county jails won't allow you to have your glasses if the lenses are tinted, even if you're light sensitive. Also, many facilities ban metal glasses, the frames must be plastic in these cases.

I do the same thing! I will often just stare at people from a distance and realize that I am just gawking at them. I finally have health insurance, and I can't wait to run my happy ass in with my new card and ask for an eye exam.
@mgray9995 жыл бұрын
@Goodim Glad What? That is referred to the bulging eyes. Not the act of staring.
@mgray9995 жыл бұрын
@Goodim Glad It's really quite different than what we refer to as staring. It's a wide eyed look from eye pressure from a thyroid disease.
@mgray9995 жыл бұрын
@Goodim Glad I can't make out people's faces and sometimes mistake them for someone I know. It has nothing to do with a thyroid and simply deteriorating vision from too much time on a computer.
