This video is the first part of a two part video showing one of the ways to change the engine coolant in a 2006 Toyota Prius. I'm pretty sure the same process will work on the 2004-2009 model years. Part 1 of the video covers draining and refilling. Part 2 covers bleeding the air out of the system.

Even if I didn't need advice to change my coolant, it's awesome seeing a dad being a dad. This is the good stuff. Thanks for sharing the information and entertainment of heart:)

Thanks for your videos. Helped me change my inverter and engine coolant. Like you I replaced 1.5gal in my engine coolant (took a while to drain, but wasn't too bad). My inverter coolant was around 0.5gal (or a little short). Here are the tricks that I found (no bleeder hoses needed). Just pour the coolant in, and when it is hard for it to naturally flow, just squeeze your tubes. Then when that is "full" and can't be burped, use the motor to run the fluid through the system. Whether that is the one for the engine coolant (and the relay short) or turning the inverter on by pushing the power button twice. It only take a few seconds maybe twice of doing and doesn't kill your 12v much. Then pour and burp the hose. Still make sure to open the bleeder tubes, but not like you have to drain a whole bunch. And after a day of driving, I will likely top off my inverter coolant. After doing this and taking 3 hours, I would say it could be done in an hour, and only consuming 2 gallons of the Toyota SLLC2 50/50 coolant. Hope this helps!

Excellent video! Thank you for posting. Your input made this job much much easier. Not including research and parts procurement time, I was able to complete the job in 2 hours. Jacking up the passenger side seemed to help a lot with draining and filling. Drain time was about 30 minutes for me. Refill was a breeze using the "hot wired" coolant tank pump and bleed valve. I ran the pump roughly a half dozen times. I drained 1.5 gallons as shown in video. Only mistake I made was not reconnecting coolant tank heat sensor before startup which threw a code on startup. I cleared the code w no problems using my minivtech and laptop. Also, as I posted earlier, the bleed hose should be smaller than 1/4" inside diameter. I made an adapter to get the 1/4" tubing to work. Also, I only needed to remove 3 "wood" screws and one plastic clip to gain access to bottom of canister/drain valve and sensor. Jack that side of car up to do this, makes it much easier.

Just wanted to add my thanks. This is definitely the most helpful video on this process out there. Saved about 400$ doing the engine and inverter coolant with your help. Freaked out a little when the engine light came on, but then I remembered I hadn’t reconnected the electric plug under the coolant drain. Did a battery disconnect to clear the code and a ok after that.

Hello, thanks a lot for the video! Little tip I read somewhere is to plug a tube from the bleeder valve to the overflow tank so that you can see when it starts leaking coolant, without spilling it EDIT: well that's exactly what you did right after actually

Jason, you do sound like a Goober, but that's how most instructional video narrators sound like. Lol. I just bought two 2007 Priuses and your video has set me on a path to maintaining my cars at a low cost. I'd like to send you a gift. I'll private message your channel to make arrangements. I'm placing this message in the comments to get other viewers that have benefitted to do the same. I'll also send you some suggestions, as problems come up. Maybe I could sponsor some future videos. Thanks.

Thanks, for these two videos, it really helped me change my coolant after a dealer repair fuck up. Not only did they use the wrong coolant, they didn't even bleed it. I drained a little over a gallon and that was after I had put in half a gallon of water when I suddenly found it overheating on the road.

That plug at 6:20 I unscrewed the bolt you see at the base and twisted my wires up, now the temperature guage doesn't register. Loved your video though! I watched several tutorials of this process just to cross examine how different set-ups might look compared to mine. However, when it came time to the job I drew a blank on that step. The plug would not come undone even with a crecent wrench. So I moved to default, UNBOLT. I later noticed my fans didn't kick on and quickly noticed my botch-job on the wires from twisting out that plug.

Wait so, engine coolant and inverter coolant aren't the same thing? Isn't that what the 3 way coolant control valve does? It's the hub point between both halves of the engine? It's an entire system isn't it?

It is a $80 bottle at the dealership. If it clean but you know these thing changed when it heated and then expose to air also changed the chemical?? I would not reuse it if it expose to that much air after heated?? I am just guessing based on engine oil concept.

Dan Beavers Also, using an amp meter to power the pump is a great idea. Mine was a little over 4 amps with no air being pumped. It would be a good idea to measure the amps before draining to have a target value to compare to when you think you are done.
