Directed by veteran animator George Gordon, "Private SNAFU presents Seaman TARFU in the Navy" was released in 1946. This toon was intended to have been the first of a series of instructional shorts made for the Navy in the style of the irreverant "Private SNAFU" series - with "Tarfu" standing for "Things Are Really Fouled Up". The toon was written by Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Seuss and Phil Eastman, with narration by Mel Blanc and Robert C. Bruce. The short was produced by Hugh Ising and Rudolf Ising, who founded the Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer animation studios. Although the Tarfu character held promise, the end of World War II and the demobilization that followed meant that this would be the only Tarfu toon ever produced.
Incidentally, Private Snafu had another brother, named Fubar, in addition to Tarfu.
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
