Last minute drift prep + forbidden steering mod.. 300zx build

My Nissan 300zx z32 build never had a great e-brake. I decide to tear my project car apart and replace the hardware, shoes, pads, and rotors. After successfully getting the rear wheels to lock up, I install a frowned upon steering modification. This offset spacer will be used as a bandaid while I figure out what subframe to use on the z. After a quick alignment, we are off the to the drift track, usair. We're ready for Rio Bash 2024

@11:17 that clunk is youre dif still, you had those 2 shims you installed on bottom side of those solid diff bushings, those shims are meant to go above the ears on the front of the diff. putting them on the bottom is preventing the gap from being properly shimmed, those shims need to be relocated to the top of the ears on the front of the diff. so shims above and solid bushings were pressed in from the bottom, that way the front tabs are sandwiched by the shim and busing. no hate. just sharing.

They hunt things like cockroaches, silverfish, spiders, bed bugs etc and yeah they are super useful, they can bite humans but its so unlikely I didnt know they could, they just usually run away when spotted. In my country we call them "money bugs" and if you see one you gonna get some money in future.

Too much free play on the drums. You adjust them with NO CLICKS on the parking brake. Think about it. You are pulling the pads out when it's clicked, so releasing it makes a large gap. That's the noise you are probably hearing when pulling the parking brake.
@twoeightythreez
@twoeightythreez Сағат бұрын
Yup, adjust with hand brake off and adjust the cable loose. Adjust the internal adjuster for very slight drag and then back off a few clicks. Then Pull e brake handle up 3 clicks and then adjust the cable to where you cannot spin the wheels by hand. Thats how my Datsun 200sx drum brakes are set up and it will hold on ANY hill with handle half way up.

@05:15, your upper raer spring isnt seated properly. that might pop off under extensive ebrake pulls. that spring has to sit snug around that pin inthe cetner. just like the spring from the front pad (on right of screen) sits nice tight and flush, but that rear or (left side of the screen) spring isnt fully seated around that center pin.

the best way to fix the handbrake clunk is to go hydro, obviously /s that clunk is an odd one, with it only being in motion it kind of sounds like when you pull the brake that the shoe isn't engaging all at once, like the leading edge is engaging and it's slamming the trailing bit of the pad into the drum. I'm not used to drum setups apart from just the theory of them, but the "only while moving" thing makes me think something is running into something else when the friction material catches.

Its because its adjusted wrong. First back off (loosen) the cable adjustments. Then adjust the brake shoes for slight drag, WITH BRAKE OFF, back off one or two clicks (at drum adjuster) THEN, pull the e brake handle up THREE CLICKS. Put the wheels back on, but leave car in air. NOW, you can adjust the cable tension until you can no longer spin the wheels by hand (in neutral). Release parking brake and make sure you can easily spin the wheels. Now the parking brake will feel tight even when pulling up one click.

I wonder how long the drum style ebrake will work for you, in Europe most of the drift cars are BMW's and every model has the same style rear brake system, no one uses it as you'd need to literally adjust it every event which is a big pain in the ass, I've only been able to make it work for winter drifting, also E46/E36 front suspension is really good for drifting, with some small mods my steering wheel literally wants to snap out of my hands because it centers itself so good.

When adjusting the rear parking brake, you set the internal adjustment with the parking brake off. This works for normal drum brakes too. Loosen your e brake cable adjustment so cable is loose too. Then adjust the parking brake shoes until you feel a slight drag, then back off a click or two. Put your wheels back on so you get more leverage. NOW, you pull the parking brake up 3 clicks and adjust the parking brake cable tension until you cannot spin the wheels by hand. This adjustment is either at the parking brake handle or at the equalizer bar where the main cable hooks up to the cables that go to the wheels. If its adjusted this way you will have a parking brake which will release entirely when all the way down but will start working even at the very first click.

I put PMU ebrake shoes on my r32 which utilizes the same z32 drum, and had the same insane knocking sound when pulling the ebrake. Took it apart probably 4-5 times but was never able to make it go away/ never found anything wrong with how it was assembled/ adjusted. Curious to hear if you’re able figure it out, I think it’s something to do with the PMU shoes themself.

I think that the loud clunking noise comes for the left brakeshoe not being tight in there. ( 5:18 ) Furthermore the orange spring at the bottem for the adjusting, doenst seem right. it shouldnt be touching the adjuster screw in that way, it looks off to me. Im an apprentrice mechanic in Denmark and ALOT of cars here have brakedrums for rear brakes here. Also when adjusting, leave the handbrake down, and adjust until theres a slight drag, 3 clicks on the handbrake should lock the wheel enough, so that you cant turn it by hand with the wheel on the studs. Just my 2cents, really apprectiate your videos Mike and what you do for the coummunity, dont ever stop

The bridge piece is called an "equalizer". When the lever pulls on the rear(trailing) shoe, it also pushes on that equalizer (it actually uses that as an anchor point) so the front (leading) shoe can be pushed against the drum.

Drums don’t seem adjusted properly - too much travel before they bite making them knock when you pull the ebrake. Or they’re adjusted unevenly and it’s making your diff clunk. Or your subframe/diff bushes are falling out.

Lil update on my Rolla, soooooo got hit by a kangaroo caved in my drivers door, all good got another door for $150 gonna color match paint it, buuuut my interior is falling apart kinda expected on a 27 year old car, no matter some mdf and some black fabric will fix that, that's happening sometimes within the next few months same for the roof liner. All of my dints will be getting pulled and filled then its getting a closed door respray, now for the fun parts, i found a rare Carib grill i bought it that will be going on also found some fx-gt badges that will replace the Toyota badge on the rear and ill pull off the corolla badge as well, i also found a cooling plate for the front i don't need it cause my Rolla never goes past half the dial but what ever helps. then the only thing left to do is refresh the motor what im going to do is get the head of a 7A-FE motor and the pistons out of a 4A-GE and still use the stock block from my 4A-FE which in theory increase the compression and make it higher revving, also found wildcat extractors gonna chuck those on and by that time it should be a rad lil hatchback to get around in considering it only weighs 2204 pounds with me in it.

@01:05 yes, cables just need adjusting, rotors have a tiny ruber plug, remove it and rotate rotor until that hole is at 6 oclock position, then look inside with flashlight, push cog gear down to tighten and push it up to loosen, fully tighten both side,the just back off that cock gear 2 clicks. then ebrake will be adjusted properly.

Those project mu shoes kick ass. 👟🥳 as far as that clunk goes, at 5:14 when you did a quick check that left shoe seemed to move a little too easily, especially when compared to how much the other one moved when you gave it a wobble. The sprung pin that hold in the left shoe also looks remarkably new in comparison to the right. First thing I'd do is take wheel and disk off, get one of the boys to pull the ebrake while you watch and make sure its actuating correctly.

That car doesn’t have flat tapping cams so really you don’t need to run VR one. I would do Amsoil or Rotella VR ones oriented towards older race cars with big V8 flat tapping cams things that need zinc so it’s kind of pointless to put it into a Japanese car that’s designed for synthetic.
