Interesting input by Lennox. The jab indeed travels faster when you have your front hand a bit out as supposed to being close to your facial area. Many all-time greats use this style of guard from Cuban boxers to Russian boxers, the list goes on.

its also the reason Lennox got KO twice from counter over hand rights.

Being 6'5 really helps. Much harder for an opponent to get around that lead hand with that kind of reach lol

Lennox Lewis is one of the boxing greats, and he’s a gentleman. He also sounds like he’s been hanging out in the US a lot, pronouncing those hard Rs.

Lewis was taught to hold his left hand out in front by Manny Steward Lewis didn’t always do it until Manny taught him later in his career

The more I watch different fighters from all disciplines the more I think there isn't a "wrong" way to do many techniques; there are tradeoffs and the pros understand what these are and exercise their judgement instead of blindly following convention for it's own sake. In his case he's got a huge reach; maybe beating others to the punch offsets the defensive advantages of retracting the left arm.

I'm from Ukraine, was taught exactly the same stance and technique since childhood=) Klitchkos landed their jab and straight right almost the same way as Lennox

@@vanyavanya-bo4js that’s great to hear, I do see a lot of Ukrainian and Russian boxers doing the same thing, it’s great to have it confirmed by you too that you are learning the same!

Sounds good, but wouldn't take you longer to defend the overhand right? Serious question, not trying to critical.

Would this still be a good idea for a shorter fighter going up against a color fire who has longer arms?
@RingReadyBoxing_6 күн бұрын
@@EP10051 for sure it can defo work. Because then the taller fighter has to work around your lead arm before getting to the target. As long as you are adaptable that’s the main thing

doesnt the lack of travel distance reduces also the speed of the punch? but i guess if it worked for Lewis im gonna start doing that
@RingReadyBoxing_9 күн бұрын
@@PabloGiuliante how would it reduce the speed? Here’s a metaphor: Is it quicker to travel from England to Russia, or England to France? France right? That’s because the distance is way shorter. Exactly the same with the jab, take away half the distance and you technically become twice as quick
@PabloGiuliante9 күн бұрын
@@RingReadyBoxing_ sorry maybe i frased that wrong, i meant the closer your hand is to the target, the less speed you can generate becouse theres less travel time
@RingReadyBoxing_8 күн бұрын
@ exactly, less travel time meaning it gets to the target quicker?
@PabloGiuliante8 күн бұрын
@@RingReadyBoxing_ yea but also less speed, so less power
@RingReadyBoxing_8 күн бұрын
@@PabloGiuliante no because there is more speed, as your fist is getting to the target faster. Your jab doesn’t need to be powerful, it needs to be fast and only hard enough for an opponent not to walk straight through it
@PrometheusBoxing12 күн бұрын
The further a punch travels at speed the harder it lands. I'm not denying it's a very useful tool, but this definitely won't have any power behind it. Good tip.

Just remember, the jab isn’t about power. It only needs enough power to stop an opponent walking straight through it
