For a provisional shot, the ball has to either go the same distance or farther away from the hole. Since it went farther than his first shot that he lost, it didn’t count.

​@@curtisgoode804 no, i don't think that is the reason. The provisional ball can't be used since he found the original ball. He must pick up the provisional ball and play with the original ball. Now since original ball was OB, he needed to re-tee again for 3. but then he OB again and did not take a provisional shot. then re-tee for 5. a devastating rule. 🥲

The provisional ball can only be used for a lost or oob ball. Because he found it and it’s unplayable, he would have to take unplayable relief, which is 2 club lengths or hit from the original position. Obviously the original position was the better option. Once the ball is found, the provisional ball is done

@@DefenderTIM But the provisional did count toward his total strokes? Because when they showed him hitting from the fairway they said he was hitting 6. I didn't know that the provisional would count toward his strokes.

Gallacher elected to take relief for what he deemed to be an unplayable lie of the original tee shot under stroke-and-distance. - Third tee shot: Stroke 3--ball deemed to be lost in play, stroke-and-distance relief taken again. - Fourth tee shot: Stroke 5--ball came to rest in the general area, and the rest of the hole was played out as usual.
