Titanium solder picks are a thing. You can buy them off Gesswein tools.

Titanium is a fun metal to make jewelry from. I use it for large lightweight earrings. When anodized it can be wild. Titanium has a lower melting point that platinum.

Titanium isn't particularly strong/hard, but by ratio to it's weight it's the strongest metal - It's alloys can be as different from each other as cast iron is from stainless steel - titanium can ignite if you get it into white hot territory, easy to do to very fine swarf, the pick is likely to be fine, though I've never used one on platinum.

Just like steel, there are tons of different alloys for titanium. It does work well for gold and silver, but you need to go to tungsten for platinum.

Im gonna get some to try

Hi Chris! Pepe Tools sells an amazing titanium solder pick. Works brilliantly - has a nice handle. I made one with titanium wire and stuck the back end into a wooden dowl, but I use it for silver. 🌺

Yes I have mine stuck in to a bamboo stick. Works ok but Im gonna get some tungsten to try

Titanium does turn into a sparkler when heated near it’s melting point while exposed to oxygen.
@DiamondMounter Жыл бұрын
Ha yes I can believe. I think sparklers are made with magnesium??

Crazy question but could you use tungsten? TIG welders have a tungsten electrode so easy to get hold of and a melting point of 3500°C
@DiamondMounter Жыл бұрын
Yes Tungsten would be a better metal!

Is it a TI alloy? Maybe that’s the problem. They sell titanium picks that don’t melt.

It's soft now, just wait until it work hardens. Annealing isn't so easy.
