I had the 100s, but sold it for the 100 II. No more tethering problems, better feel and handling and better (eye) autofocus. I use eye autofocus all the time for portraits and beauty and it works great. The 45-100 is on my camera most of the time; flexibel and absolutely great IQ. But whenever I get the chance to use the GF 110 2.0, I will. That is the best, sharpest lens I have ever owned. There is nothing better for portraits.

I agree about the 110 f2. My go to lens for portraits 90% of the time. Eventually want to upgrade to the 100 II since I love vertical grips and want to try out the rotating EVF add-on as well.

Hi SCott, thanks for the video; very insightful. I red that it is the PDAF AF hardware built into the sensors (in between the pixels); or lack there off in the PhaseOne, that makes this subtle difference in part. The AF lines can be made visible by pushing the image 5 to 6 stops over; the IQ4 also uses "frame averaging", to reduce noise.

I was a long-time Canon guy. But I'm sometimes hired by an agency to shoot at their studio. They transitioned from Canon to Fuji maybe two years ago and when I went there and tried the GFX 100s I liked it and ended up with the GFX 100II. This camera produces beautiful files. I do miss the quick focus on the Canon R5 so if I need that I use the Canon but for stills and composed portraits or interiors the Fuji is amazing. (Menu on the GFX does, to me, feel a bit year 2000). Also, I paint and now use the GFX as my "scanner" for files for printing and just perfect for that need.

I’m not 100% certain about this, being a photographer and not an optics and/or electronics engineer, but it makes sense to me that differences in CFAs and demosaicing algorithms would lead to differences in color depth and quality among 16-bit cameras, and to some degree even between different copies of the same camera.

I would like to hear your thoughts on using the GFX 100S with a Mamiya or Pentax medium format lens and a tilt shift adapter. I can't afford a Cambo or Sinar technical camera, but could get a used lens and adapter. Great Video and thanks for the comparison shots.

Beautiful photographs! It’s always nice to hear your thoughts. Medium format from Fujifilm is a small dream of mine. I own two Fujifilm bodies, but they’re from the more consumer-oriented lineup for hybrid use. I’ve actually got used to its menu system, haha! I wonder why the APS-C line has an X-Trans sensor, while the medium format uses a Bayer sensor. This makes a difference in Lightroom Classic. As far as I know, no other camera brand uses an X-Trans pixel-mapped sensor.

The P backs are all very different. I think the P45 went for resolution ahead of colour. I’ve had three backs and comparing the P20 to my old Canon 5d, the Phase files were much more beautiful and painterly. Unfortunately, you’re stuck with base iso on these.

I really enjoyed that you showed your images in detail. Sensors are cool and all, but these shots are good because of the light and all the work that goes into them. They'd still look good even if they were shot on lesser cameras. Not as good, but the essence of the photo would be intact. Nice to see the graphic design of the ads too. Good stuff. I'm no pro, but I do own those same Sekor lenses for my RB67 and got a Photodiox adapter so I could shoot them on my Canon 1Ds. It's completely impractical for handheld as they weigh a ton. I liked that they looked smoother and lower contrast than my Canon glass. Creamy for sure.

As always, I appreciate your perspective here. One thing not mentioned, is how would you compare it to a similarly sized (resolution) medium format? Something such as the Hassy X2D or a 100 or 150mp digital back for a 645? A while back during your podcast with Rob you mentioned how affordable it would be to grab an old medium format body, a digital back and a couple lenses. Ready for an upgrade and have been concentrating mainly on products. Thanks for your insight!

I spent years shooting on a Leaf Aptus 22. It produced 16 bit files and has 'fat' pixels which helps when you apply movements (hardly any colour casts). I've upgraded and still miss the simplicity of that digital back. It's only 22mp but frankly that's enough for 90% of my work. Something about the colour from Leaf is really film like also. Now I have to use LCC files to remove colour casts. I haven't managed to upgrade to the IQ4 which has a backlit sensor. What I want is a full sized medium format back around 60mp with a backlit sensor. At around 10k max also. Surely that is possible? Otherwise I will have to use Fuji with a 30mm shift and put up with the menu system.

Hello, thanks for the video. I have been using the GFX 50sII for 7 months. A great camera with a magnificent colour range, it has its flaws, which we all know. But it is great for working in still life. The lenses have great resolution, the 45-100 is great. I also bought the Macro 120, which is very expensive. But it has a BIG problem, it is not 1:1, with the price it has it should be able to do 1:1, it forces you to buy a macro ring and this loses quality; verified. My question is the following: what do you have attached to the camera to be able to do still life? What extension bellows? Can you explain this configuration to us? Thank you very much

I use Cambo Ultima. I designed and 3d printed actus like parts to get better room for movements /flange distance, ability to mount compendium with filter holder and rotating back. On that system, even GFX 50s is bang for bucks. It is a relatively old tech slow focusing camera, but when mounted on Cambo only sensor size and image quality matters for me. ( That yellow ring on your Mamiya... I need something like that. DOF lever is quite frustrating. If you could tell me where you got it...)

Your the pro: but your point of "blocky" dark tones on the Canon files is specific to the sensor of those particular Canon cameras which I once owned, and ultimately changed over to Sony due to the poor dynamic range in the shadows. In the studio you have more control over avoiding the short comings of those particular Canon sensors. You would be more impressed with Sony sensors, which are of course the providers of sensors for the Fuji and Phase.

The original GFX 100 is a much better camera than the 100S - dramatically better build quality and higher resolution viewfinder. Also, the 100 has the option of waist level viewfinder, which is a big plus. And, it can be externally powered and charged from a proper robust connector, not horrible flimsy USB C Given that they are both similar in price pre- owned, the original 100 wins hands down.

If your interested in exploring high Megapixle cameras maybe for a sponser, you could check out the Sony a7rV with Its 205mega pixel multi shot raw, or the Canon R5 with 405 megapixel multishot JPG, post processing won’t be viable with the R5 and JPG but you could do 50-200 megapixel difference and diminishing returns for your line of work. 5d - Fuji - phase - Sony multishot.

I don't know about Canon, but with my Sony, I've found pixel-shift to be of fairly limited use. Even some GM lenses struggle to resolve the 60 megapixels. The 240 files are bigger, but I've never found them to be noticeably sharper for studio work.
