Anna Cipullo recently bought some of the cheapest mountain bike suspension forks she could find on the internet! First, she took these cheap AliExpress forks to the trails for a GMBN video and had initially planned a short breakdown of the fork. But Greg and the team's reaction to the quality of this fork was better than expected so we’ve decided to publish a deep dive look here on GMBN Tech!

Hopefully this video has done a good job of outlining the safety levels of this fork already. The fact that a critical part was damaged, a structural securing nut was threaded, and 3/4 of the seals were missing should tell you enough about the quality without a big brand running it through their testing facilities.

@@johnnybravo1912 i dont think they are comparing low end with high end , if you bought any named brand fox,rockshox ect of ebay for the same price of £140 you would have a far better/safer fork with the named brand even if its a bit older. On some MTB things i think you can go for a cheaper option as some brands really do take the piss with pricing but when it comes with forks theres no point in taking a change if it breaks you cant get it fixed if you managed to survive it breaking and its never going to last as long and your far better of buying 2nd hand and getting it serviced for similar money

A $1000+ fork is essentially a high-performance/racing product. MX (or any other kind of performance motorcycle) suspension also has short service intervals. I would imagine that suspension service intervals for high-performance off-road cars (e.g. rally, Baja, etc) would be similar.

I have Aliexpress forks, actually looked at this one since it looks kind of cool, but there wasn't enough information for me to really consider it. I do wish I'd gotten the DNM upside down one though in hindsight, since mine is potentially as sketchy as this one inside (although it rides fine so far so probably not as atrocious), whereas the DNM is heavy and primitive in a way that it should require maintenance more often than a more expensive fork from the big brands, and feel less sophisticated, but also primitive in a way that it probably won't break or wear completely out as long as you take care of it. My DNM shock is excellent, and their forks seem to be a cut above the randomly occurring brands, although like I said, not necessarily the cutting edge of technology or as maintenance free as the big boys. You do have to consider though the cost of taking your branded forks to a place like TFTuned as well, wheras the Ali ones cost less than a set of tires. The one I ended up buying, is just OK, but there are photos and explanations online by people who have taken it apart and tuned it up, where they lubricate it better than it comes from the factory, but I didn't see any cases of people finding it completely F-ed up like this when they take it apart. So it looks like that little bit of research served me well, might have even saved a bunch of teeth there, knock on wood. Anyway, that's not what makes me nervous riding. What makes me nervous is that when I broke the main pivot bolt in my not so great Aliexpress frame, I got it repaired at the machine shop nearest the bike shop, which turned out to be right across the street from where the Titan sub took off from to go implode, days before they left. If they'd needed any work done at the last minute, they'd have used that same machine shop, around that same time. My bike could have the same metal in it as the Titan submersible, so that's what really haunts me when I ride. Plus it's all from Aliexpress lol. But that pivot bolt is way more spooky.

How about getting an engineer and a workshop to fix it / build it properly and explain during that what goes into it? E.g. seals with different applications (dynamic / static etc.), compression, deformation, lubrication, diameter change when stretched etc. All proper nerdy stuff, but people (also sometimes people working the machine industry since years!) totally underestimate what actually goes into all those considerations... (and sometimes in the industry make changes that might work in the tedt setup, but not in the field - which often can be proven by doing the maths / physics needed)
@feedbackzaloop
@feedbackzaloop 3 ай бұрын
Funny how people can also overestimate engineering of bike components when the reality is more of FAFO than thought-through calculations. Historically, most brands grow out of machine shops rather than design bureaus... If you can work around AI translation or simply know Russian, there is an ex-engineer/bikemechanic/youtuber Lexapskov doing exactly what you want. All English or Spanish content I'm aware of is rather academic and they don't go past graphs and charts.
@WaechterDerNacht

@@feedbackzaloop don't know what you mean with FAFO - never heard that. When it comes to design, sometimes you end up just using e.g. the same seal grove geometry over and over. Of course you don't re-calculate everything if conditions don't change. I know from first hand experience, that often being done with the design fast rather than correct is what company owners and customers want. So you end up skipping those things more often than not. Here comes experience into play about what you need for what circumstances. But sometimes it bites you and have to correct such things a year after market launch.. It would just be a nice way for GMBN Tech to show what actually would go into such moving parts like forks, hubs etc. And I'm sure they would find a balance between full nerd mode and entertainment. But it would also show nicely why maths and physics in school is good, since the basic principles can be understood with this basic knowledge. I don't expect them to slap around with integrals left, right and center...

Wear and tear marks tell much more. But I'm afraid unless those connected to injuries it won't bring GMBN views. It's frightening to see a lot of new videos of those Chinese e-bikes in the US. People are actually replacing their forks with these things! I see more and more of them on the US e-bike videos I watch. The trails they're hitting... wow!

Even most higher end emtbs are not really made for going over 25mph Chinese ebikes are serious deathtraps for various reasons the forks are only a piece of the pile ...

What's scarier, is that when it breaks (which it will) they just buy another.. So many people don't understand spending more the first time saves you in the long run. Not just from direct cost, but from potential hospital bills as well.

This fork cost like my entire bike! And my monthly wage like only twice as it's cost! Damn it's pricey in Great Britain! Well, thankfully on my I don't ride on trails, but roads there can be rougher than some trails anyway... Anyway I've stopped even from thinking to buy something from AliExpress even if write it from smartphone on which I've spent only 2/3 of it's price inside my country. There no chances to return Your money if something goes wrong nowadays. Better to construct something by Yourself than buy there... If You can at least.

I buy secondhand because I can’t afford new, but I wait for offers and don’t rush into stuff. I just make do until a deal comes along, still ride though. I did once buy a 27.2 dropper from Ali express and do use it, even though it does have a bit of play in it, not enough to cause an issue. I take it apart and clean it quite regularly though because it gets dirty quickly inside. It’s a coil dropper, so I don’t have too many problems. Still I’d like to find a good second hand branded one at a decent price…

Something interesting to note here is the price - Aliexpress (and similar platforms) operate on a very slim margin - often with orders shipped direct from factory. This means this POS-fork-shaped-object actually cost over £100 to build! Now if you consider the margins for a low end entry level fork like a Suntour XCR or even a Rockshox Recon - they are actually close to being the same build price.....

AliExpress is nothing like Temu, Wish etc. There a proper factory to individual/ store front to individual website. And it's the most legitimate there is. I've had 100s of orders through AliExpress and as long as you known what your looking for and stick to reputable Chinese brands your fine. Can't say the same for wish and Temu. As for "margins" I'm not sure your referencing the correct site. As AliExpress direct from factory stores often have 10-40% off sales. Im willing to be they over paid for the fork.
@tim__sadler

@unclejohn5012 I hate to break it to you, but the business model and margins (whether cost up or rrp down, a margin is still a margin) are the same across all those sites.

This is interesting. I particularly liked your point about no knowing who made it. There have been several accusations made against China, of using forced labour in their manufacturing industry and this is always something that deeply concerns me in regards buying direct from China. There is Panda Podium who only ship premium Chinese parts, but their prices do reflect this.
