I revisited my very first monotype Nuzlocke to see how much things have changed in two years!
Original Video - • Pokemon Emerald Hardco...
Normal Nuzlocke Ruleset:
1. Fainting = Death
2. Can only catch one Grass Type Pokémon per route (Species Clause)
3. Nickname Pokémon
Hardcore Nuzlocke Ruleset:
4. No items in battle (held items okay)
5. No leveling past the next gym leader/E4's ace (at the START of the battle)
6. Play on manual "Set" battle mode

My favorite things you've added to your channel that puts you above everyone else are the story lines you give your pokemon so that it hits US just as hard as you. You have no idea how many times I've nearly burst into tears when the death music comes on. Like Nelson of Spheal Team Six, that one hurt only for me to lose it further when Bertha named her son after Nelson

I feel like this works even as a standalone episode. This felt like an educational video on effective video presentation strategies and tips. It's like if a tutor did a feedback response for a student's submission of a video assignment... only the tutor marks you down whenever your voice cracks.

What if you did one where you could use whatever Pokémon you want, but non normal types could only use normal type moves, and normal types could only use non normal type moves. Or just a nuzlocke with no stab moves

We are our always our own worst critic. I've watched a ton of different Pokémon KZbinrs and I as a newer fan I gotta say your channel is a total hidden gem. One topic I'd love to see you cover for Nuzlocke advice is team building especially for the Elite 4. I've lost several clean attempts in the Elite 4 and would love to see your approach for the end game. Keep up the great work!

Halfway into this video, I got concerned you were talking your previous decisions down so much, even though for a 2nd KZbin video, it is incredible! Even with such a strong start, you still grew so much, too. Your thought proces shows how much you care.

You're very critical here, and although it is a good thing because it shows you've really improved, to be honest many of the small things that make your vids great and set you apart from many pokemon creators were already here, and I'm not surprised at all that even with all the "shortcomings" that you point out this run blew up. You have a lot of talent and I hope you keep sharing that with us for a long time 😊

I really like hearing you talk about your creative process, more than the idea of reaction videos. You've really got a mind for what makes a good video, and one thing I don't recall you having touched on much in this video is how much better your scripts have gotten as you've been doing this. You vary your language, and it feels a lot more creative, both with the plots and also just with the play by play saying what happens! I can see how much work goes into every one of these videos you put out, and the effort is always admired and appreciated. Even if they don't capture quite as much attention as the more clickbaity, frenetic/ loud type videos you mentioned, it's better that you do these in your own way. I can tell just by how you talk about it, it's more what you like doing - and more importantly it allows your own style to shine. I know you talked about that somewhat in your podcast/interview thing you did with Bloody that one time. Your approach to video editing, humor style is inspiring - you make the sorts of videos you want to see, (and as it happens, a lot of people ALSO want to see that!) and push yourself to do your best with each one you put out. I hope you continue to be able to do this sort of thing for as long as you'd like to.

Your videos are entrenched into my life at this point, and it’s clear you’ve just kept improving over time. All your hard work has paid off, Dr HG. I do think in the early days of nuzlocke content, having this slower paced flow made more sense-nowadays we’re so used to them, so the vibe is different. Thanks for being around and providing us wonderful content over the years. I’m sure the next two years will be just as great!

It was pretty interesting to watch you come back to this video and go over past mistakes and editing issues. It seems like you've really progressed in your skills as both an editor and a nuzlocker. Though honestly my favorite part was your getting re-invested in the nickname theme lol. Anyway, I will once again recommend a no same type moves run of Black / White and / or X/Y. If you do either of these runs I'd recommend fighting as many trainers as possible before you do each gym if you want some extra challenge, some of them are pretty scary and I think it'd help spice up the run. It's so rare to see you need to plan around or strategize against normal trainers, especially since most of them are skippable. (Copy/pasted from last video.)

So in my last year of university I was 100% struggling. Like really bad. I'd just come out to my family and friends and lost A LOT of my important relationships. And you're channel as young and unpolished as it was alongside Papasea and a couple other nuzlockers and Pokémon playthrough channels really got me through it! Now 3 years from those trying times I am a happy young man with a degree and meaningful friendships and good connections with my family. Honestly without these types of videos info dumping and getting me invested into a new style of playing/enjoying Pokémon I don't know where I would be. But man, it was great to see you look back at where it *not really* all began for you! Even seeing the old layout had me nostalgic and the way you spoke a little bit quieter and less pronounced which as you stated was like you were nervous was just so wholesome! Keep making the good content and if you ever do one of these again can you go over the flygon only run! That was like one of my absolute favourites of your videos! 🥹🥹

was kinda funny to see how you oscillated between dissertation defense voice when you were critiquing your own plays and TA voice when you were trying to explain nuzlocke tips. i subscribed when that grass monotype video came out because i was craving pokemon content from someone with a deep knowledge of game mechanics that wasn't competitive pokemon or speedruns - i think your "pro" nuzlocker content is by far the best, and it's nice to be able to watch a condensed youtube video instead of lengthy stream vods. the "gimmick" challenges where you're picking from a very arbitrary pool ("cute pokemon only", "nocturnal pokemon only", "headbutt pokemon only", etc.) have always been the most fun for me to watch.

Hey Dr.Flygon i just wanted to say that i don't think good editing and well thought out script makes the videos necessarily more enjoyable to watch i think the reason for why this is still your best performing video is because you involve the audience so much in the process and i actually kind of like that not everything is cut out. Sometimes it's also fun to watch a fight without being cut to much where u have to reset afterwards or where you loose a valuable team member. Basically just being with you there throughout the Journey of your Nuzlocke is really enjoyable to watch.

This was the first Nuzlocke video I watched, and was hooked! I’ve since attempted and failed a nuzlocke of Emerald, like, 10 times, but I had fun doing it at least

You inspired me to beat my first hardcore nuzlocke of emerald, got so close already and wiped at the champ haha. On attempt 6 now and its making the game so much more fun. Thanks for the insipiration and the great videos :)

its so cool to see you having improved so much i still remember when the lets go pikachu video released its so cool too having seen your gigantic succes after those videos (like from around 5k to 100k in like a week) was so satifying. im so glad that you went from 'i wish i could do hardcore nuzlockes for a living. dream job.' to it being your job. currently, you're still one of the only nuzlockers i consistantly watch, cuz not only is the amount of content pretty consistant, its also such high quality that keeps improving. have a good one pal.

You were the best then and you're the best now dude! Glad you weren't too hard on yourself (most of the time) and that you are able to step back and recognise your own growth. Onwards and upwards!

Cool to see this look back at the origins of the channel! Kind of thought the whole insurance naming theme would have been explained but perhaps that adds to the humor of this video. Either way, can't wait to see what comes next for the channel!

@@FlygonHG Fair enough man. I respect the commitment to sticking with the joke long after it applied.

I remember seeing this video on recommend. Think you were at 10k subs. Watched all your content after that and added you to my Weekend routine. Grass type Scarlet run is the challenge

I like retrospectives like this that have a purpose or occasion. If there’s another milestone video you have in mind, or a first of its kind in your list, I think that’d be just as interesting too!
