PROFESSIONAL PILOT explanation of how to do a VOR approach in the TBM 930 on Microsoft Flight Simulator. In this video I will show you how to do a VOR DME approach from start to finish in the TBM 930. Simple, easy, and informative with step-by-step instructions and highlight boxes on each step. Setting up the VOR approach, intercepting the course, and arming the NAV button on the auto pilot panel (the panel is really called the flight director control panel) are the toughest parts, but I explain how to do it all. The rest is easy and made easier in my explanation. I also show the steps of setting up the approach in the FMS/FMC. The point of this video is to be able to do an approach and landing after watching it.
In this video I explain how to do a VOR DME approach in Santa Catalina, California (KAVX).

You deserve more subscribers - one of the best tutorials on KZbin - as an almost total beginner you have a very easy style to understand

Thanks for saying that! I wish I had more subscribers, too. It's hard to beat the KZbin algorithm. They will come in time. Word of mouth does help makes these videos grow. Feel free to spread them around. I try my best to make my videos simple enough that a person with zero experience can watch them once or twice and go do what they saw in the video. I take a lot of time making sure something is boxed so viewers can see exactly what I am doing as I am saying it.

Stumbled on your channel by complete accident. How you are not more popular I don’t know - especially when compared to other youtubers who make guides but have zero piloting experience. Factual, concise and straight to the point. Great content keep it up!

First, I’m glad you found the channel. Second, I’m not sure how the channel isn’t more popular other than the KZbin algorithm doing what it does. No matter how many videos are made the daily new subscriber count is very steady and the revenue is steady no matter how many subs or videos made. I have come to the conclusion to just keep doing what I enjoy.

@@thecorporatepilotdad I’ve no idea how KZbin algorithm works, but I’ve read anecdotally that all it takes is one video to take off and channels can explode overnight. The videos on approaches, properly using VOR/DME etc and reading them from the charts are amazing, at least they are to an amateur like myself. As long as you enjoy it I’d say keep going. I’ll share your channel with a few friends as well and try spread the word!

@@adhesiveducks I’ve seen channels explode and they still grow amazingly fast which is great for those creators. I put a large amount of work into this channel so it will inevitably grow larger. Here is the first video of my Learn To Fly Here series. It’s like taking flight lessons from 0 hours through private pilot. Just finished video #3 and many more to go over the next few months. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnOleKGMbc-ijdU

VOR/DME approaches aren't that bad. It's just a little bit more busy work and paying attention to where you're at the whole time. Wait until I do one on NDB approaches here in a few days. I'm doing a tutorial on NDB intercept and tracking right now. It should be online in the next 30-45 mins. I'll have an NDB approach in a few days that is even worse than a VOR/DME but still not too hard. None of this stuff is hard with practice. Fortunately, everything is moving toward GPS approaches. These dive and drive style approaches aren't the safest things around but we all did them for years in the real world and still do.

I just landed in the sim at this airport today but had no idea what that landing plate meant. Thanks for putting this video out. I'm going to go give this a shot tomorrow. My landing today was pretty sketchy; cross wind.

Crosswind landings are fun but with practice they are easy. There is a video on my channel covering an approach plate from top to bottom. There is also one here on crosswind landings kzbin.info/www/bejne/lZC6aKWDl92Km7M

@@thecorporatepilotdad It would really help newbies like myself, if you could elaborate on your plans at the beginning of the video. I only get it after watching the first round. Then on the second run I can really study the actual procedures. Thanks

@patrusheff13 3 жыл бұрын
In real life, with the final approach being so tight, would you land the plane anyway or go for a missed approach? Also, do you know why did the make the approach course so much different from the runway's direction? Looks like there is nothing high if you approach straight to rnw 22. And thanks for great explanation, it is like 4th video on VOR DME approach I watched and still learned some new stuff!
@thecorporatepilotdad
@thecorporatepilotdad 3 жыл бұрын
If you can make a descent using normal procedures, then yes, I would land. Usually, that means not descending faster than 1000 feet per minute and not making turns steeper than 30 degrees of bank. That approach is a circling approach. It does not have a runway listed in the name of the approach (i.e. VOR/DME-B). If there is a letter instead of a runway after the approach name, it is going to be a circling approach meaning the final approach course and the runway heading vary by 30 degrees or more. I have another VOR DME approach that uses Navigraph and shows the airplane's position on the approach plate as it flies the approach. That approach is a straight in approach.

Great Video. Thanks. I noticed that when making your inbound leg on the procedure turn that you changed from HDG to NAV but the HSI continued to follow the HDG heading of 127. Was this just a coincidence that the NAV was at the same heading value or was the autopilot still in HDG mode? Thanks again.
@thecorporatepilotdad
@thecorporatepilotdad 2 жыл бұрын
It was a coincidence. When NAV is selected it intercepts at a 45 degree angle (In MSFS) and the PT inbound is a 45 degree intercept as well. Great question. I had to go back and look at the video. At least it didn't make me watch an ad on my own video this time. ;)

noob here so maybe a dumb question - do you basically fly over the runway at altitude toward the VOR and then do an 180 degree turn (first 127 then 172) back? I thought jets have big circling patterns and then come straight in but clearly that's not what happens. Thanks
@thecorporatepilotdad
@thecorporatepilotdad 2 жыл бұрын
When flying a VOR approach, final approach course can be entered two ways. One way is doing the full approach by flying over the VOR, flying the outbound course, then flying the procedure turn to intercept final. The other way is to get a radar vector to final approach from ATC. The latter is much easier. Jets and propeller airplanes would use the very same approach plate with a few modifications on times for flying outbound from the VOR because of differences in speed but that's about it.

Where do you see how long you are supposed to time certain parts, like the outbound?
@thecorporatepilotdad
@thecorporatepilotdad Жыл бұрын
Those numbers are not published because the speed flown will vary from airplane to airplane. A Cessna 172 may go outbound for 2 minutes before doing the procedure turn, but a Citation may go outbound only 1 minute because a higher speed being flown to stay within the prescribed distance from the final approach fix (usually 10 NM). Usually, the outbound leg from the FAF is 1-2 minutes, the outbound leg of the procedure turn is 1 minute (depending on wind) and the inbound leg of the procedure turn is flown until the final approach course is intercepted.

How do you know to hold for 1 min before certain turns?
@thecorporatepilotdad
@thecorporatepilotdad 10 ай бұрын
Do you mean on the procedure turn? 1 minute isn’t required but staying within the protected area (usually 10 NM from the FAF) is required. Slow airplanes usually do 1 min outbound with procedure turns and faster airplanes will do 30 seconds outbound and then start the procedure turn outbound.

CRS vs Heading ? Why is there such a huge discrepancy between the two?

I looked at the video and didn’t see a huge discrepancy. Heading will differ from the magnetic course based on how strong the crosswind is.
