A good look at the Sony a7rIII. I made the switch from Canon over a long period of time. I started with the a7r, then a7rII, then a9, and now a7rIII. It was the a9 that let me finally sell my last Canon body (1Dx) and also switch to Sony native glass. All of my professional work for the last 2-3 years has been with the a7rII and even though I only have about 2 weeks with the a7rIII, it has been a dream. IMO, the a7rIII is the best camera ever made unless you are looking at a medium format and Sony GM glass is tack sharp. Keep the videos coming.

Dan-Been watching you work for years and as usual another great video. Thanks for the overview as I made the same jump only from Canon for many of the same reasons you mentioned in your video (I was initially moving to the 850 until the A7R3 was released. The Sony lenses are awesome and able to use many of my Canon primes using the Sigma MC-11 adapter. Needless say so far I am not disappointed in my choice. Looking forward to seeing new works using the Sony. Rock On.

I’m sorry but I just don’t get it ? The main reason and the thing that you keep going back to is that it’s soooo much lighter than carrying around your 2 Nikon bodies. I bet that it is , simple math. Carry around 2 Sony bodies with the same lenses and I just cannot imagine that would be soooo different as to warrant a change. I’m 62 , I regularly carry 2 bodies though some pretty tough real estate. D810 / tamron 15-30 and D500 / 200-500 and it just is not a problem, in fact I like a big camera with a battery grip . My 850 will be here any day and I’m really looking forward to that big body and even deeper grip. That said I do have big hands and not everyone is me . I have put my nikons thought pure hell , from my 700 , 7100, 750, and the above and they have never let me down. I honestly think that the Sony is a great camera , let’s see how well it ages ? Thanks for the video , well done .
@DanBallard6 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, thanks for the comment. Since I just covered my thoughts on this in another comment almost exactly I will just paste it here as well. If the weight is not important to you then absolutely stay with Nikon. Again, I think they make excellent gear. Where the weight and size really starts to matter for me is when you add everything together. I am constantly doing very challenging multi-day hikes and I travel full time (I literally don't have a house or apartment). The total amount of gear that I have to carry between camera gear and camping/travel gear is substantial for sure. Yes, just one Sony vs Nikon body is not going to make a giant difference. But when I can save one or two pounds many times (tripod, tents, bags, etc) it really, really adds up. Being able to move quickly on a long hike can mean getting a shot or not. With my setup...A7Riii, 12-24mm, 85mm and a crazy light RRS travel tripod (not the one in the video), plus the ultra light camping gear, I can do that for the first time. Certainly not only because of the Sony...but it does help with the goal. Making the choice to not have a 24-70 or 70-200 (at least for travel or hiking, I may get a 70-200f4 for certain things at some point) helps a ton as well. Honestly though, as mentioned, that is just one thing I love about it. There are other things as well, and there just isn't really a major downside for me any more. So, might as well have save the size and weight, get the user modes and custom buttons which are huge for me and be able to use the 12-24. I waited for a long time because it wasn't worth the downsides for some weight savings, or even the things I like about the Sony. For me at least I just don't see why not at this point. Again, if you like the bigger body though or weight doesn't matter you certainly can't go wrong with Nikon!

Dan Ballard Sir nothing against you but after looking at your back pack in this video, I dont think 300gm (nikon d850 is 300gm heavier than sony a7riii) will make much noticeable difference.

Sony bodies won't be nearly as well built as a Nikon (what is? maybe a Pentax) but i have dropped a Sony A6000 and two straps have failed on me with the Mk1 and Mk2 A7R. all 3 survived 3-4ft hitting the concrete with no major damage. heart was in my mouth most recently as i was doing some casual filming with an adapted Canon lens. thought at least one of the following would have cracked: lens, evf, variable nd in adaptor, lcd screen or stabalised sensor... all fine, just the plastic lens hood snapped enough to mount securely afterwards. they're not tank like but they'll last i reckon. they're improving with each generation. weight wise it's more that you can get lightweight lenses as an option and save even more weight. A7Rii Samyang 35mm 2.8 (i really decent lens for the money) is half the weight of the D850 with a 35mm 1.8. 1.4 lenses seem to all be roughly the same weight and bulk due to physics of course. Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8 is also an exceptional lens for it's size and weight. used mirrorless for 6 years and exclusively so for about 5. hard to even think of going back (but if i were it would be the D850 or D750). i myself have small hands but i do like to spread fingers out a little and the Panasonic GH4 is just about perfect, right number of buttons too. A7Rii isn't too shabby though with an L-plate underneath. Sony need to flesh out their lenses and find a way to bring down their prices on those. the bodies are perfectly priced for what they can do. adapting Canon equiv lenses will surely lose them money in the end?!
@Chopperbob566 жыл бұрын
Hey Dan , thanks very much for taking the time to reply to my comments. I actually spend a lot of my time camping and carrying some pretty heavy gear in some pretty heavy weather. My last outdoor shoot was in Grand Teton where I did a fair amount of hiking with believe it or not the Nikon D500 with the Nikon 400mm 2.8 ! Plus of course my tripod ! Now that’s a lot of weight and I’m thinking that I’ve carried so much weight for so long I’m just not as effected by a small weight change in the body. But your point is valid, not everyone is an old salty dog with large hands !! All the best buddy and I look forward to your videos . Cheers ..bob

The Steve Perry D850wildlife review 16k images really shows off how kick ass the 850 is for action. I think Nikon and Canon have a lot more experience in build quality of pro bodies and ergos. Over the Sony. With larger glass it seems too small esp on vertical shooting without adding a grip. IMO the a9 should come with a grip already as the top of the line camera. Like rhe D5 and 1dx built in. Stronger and better sealing. It will be interesting to see if Nikon and canon introduce mirrorless pro bodies. Sony helped create xqd and should have had two of them in this camera. Increase body a bit. Much faster cards than SD cards. And why limit the cam to only one type II Slot. Make them both type II. Is it that much more expensive?

Great review! I have been using my a7rii for about a year as a travel / back packing camera for landscapes and portraits. Image quality is incredible and the size is really small with the Zeiss Loxia 21/2.8. Take a look at that lens if you haven't already. It's much smaller then the 12-24 GM. I would like to own that lens someday, but I think I will always tend to gravitate toward the smaller manual focus prime because of its small size and amazing image quality. For landscape work with wide angle lenses, auto-focus is really not that valuable, especially shooting stopped down. The 21mm is not extremely wide, but stitching even multiple exposures for HDR/focus stacking in Lightroom is so very easy now this has never been an issue.
@DanBallard6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the thoughts! Sounds like a great lens! I am a huge fan of being super wide, so the 12-24 is my kind of tool, but I can see for travel how the 21 would be great. I also love how you can shoot a pano and get a bit wider.

Dan, just a quick question. I'm vacillating between the D850 and A7Riii. I'm not a pro but I do a lot of astro, landscape, parties and macro. Regarding the perspective of weight, yes the Sony is lighter, but once you add (good) glass, aren't you back to just about equal weights? And, with the Sony being lighter, is the camera off balance? Some older and even some newer Nikon glass is lighter. yes, I know Sony has perhaps more features, but I'm just curious about the weight for now. Thanks for your $0.02,
@DanBallard6 жыл бұрын
Hey Gary, sorry about the late reply. Yes, if you use heavy glass and lots of lenses it probably doesn't matter. I use so few lenses and the ones I use are super light so for me the whole setup is super small and light.

@Dan Ballard Great video and helpful info with great photo work. I do have a specific question.... I have the A7R2 and I almost reach to pull my hair out as the start up is SLOW....and I have to wait for the Modes from Manual or A or P to change between WITH AN ACTUAL PROMPT FOR IT!!! Have they removed this childish splash screen and delay? I know its relatively a small thing in the scope of things, but it is one of the things that bother me as I switch cameras from a mechanical DSLR to a electronic device. Your thoughts? Has it finally blurred the line of being a smartphone to a true run and gun-able workhorse? Or are we in standby mode? :-)
@DanBallard6 жыл бұрын
Phil Indeblanc Hi Phil, are you using a fast high quality memory card? If not something must be wrong. While the riii is more snappy then the rii, the rii isn't that bad. Certainly not to the point you are talking about.
@philindeblanc6 жыл бұрын
I can see startup related to the card recognition(I use a few. The slowest is a Snadisk 80mb/s 32gb Ultra card vs Lexar Pro 100mb/s, but I don't see it a relation for Mode change. While I can't say its a long time, BUT it is a difference from simply selecting the Mode and just shooting right after VS selecting the mode having a childish splash screen tell me the Mode I selected with the secondary unnecessary indication on top the actual physical dail I used to change it. It SHOULD almost (since its maybe an issue) instantaneously change and I can shoot. But it even ASKS for an OK!? Luckily this is ignorable AFTER it makes the mode change. How much snappier would you say the RIII is, as THIS is my upgrade reason. Maybe someone such as yourself, can post a video showing time delays, and perhaps comparisons? @Dan Ballard

Really beautiful images from a true professional and I bet there will still be people hating on the review. I’m using an a7ii which I love and it gets me great results but was thinking of getting an a7riii instead of the a7iii because of the flexibility of having that extra resolution. Being able to crop, being able to print large at high res, and being able to turn a fixed prime into somewhat of a zoom lens (joking). I was curious to hear from a7riii users on how they deal with the file size. I’m sure that 42mp files won’t be considered huge in a few years seeing as everything (including storage and computing) is getting bigger and faster.
@DanBallard6 жыл бұрын
Hey Karl, thanks a lot for the comment! Yeah, I love the R for sure. So nice to have the flexibility. For the most part the file size is manageable, but you do need a fast computer to handle them and LR is slower. Hopefully that will continue to get better. Overall very worth it for me though.

Hey Jesse, thanks! That is such a tough call. I have been in Peru for the last 5 weeks and shot in some crazy cold temps in CO before that. So far no issues at all. It was pretty wet a few times so no issues with light water. But when it seemed like it was going to get super wet I just through the rain cover on. Not really wanting to test it to extremes! So....I really don't know other then no issues with minor elements.

Thinking of doing the jump from Nikon to the R3 as well. I am contemplating between the 12-24mm and the 16-35 GM lenses for UWA.... what do you think of the telescopic design where the barrel extends when you focus/zoom? They say the lenses are weather sealed but I think its a possible ingress point for moisture. Kinda a big deal for me because I will be like you, shooting outdoors A LOT and I am in Asia where humidity is a big deal.

Uhg, so jealous right now haha! It's a great camera, from a contender that's fairly new on the scene no less. Sony will be making an even larger impression on the industry within the years to come. Some may say they've been slow on the ball but I believe it was a strategic play, using their resources to manufacture sensors to sell onto already established brands and provide a product those brands could not manufacture better, reap the rewards and then later (today) use the knowledge gained to out perform the brands they're supplying.
@DanBallard6 жыл бұрын
Yep, such a good move. Sell sensors to everyone. Same with Samsung. It's a good play. Of course I still think Sony is making the best camera as well overall at least for me by a decent margin right now.

I was a Nikon user for most of my life (film to digital). Last year I lowered the weight of my backpack by adding an a7R II and lenses, replacing my D810 system. I was very happy with the landscape work from this system but never very excited about my wildlife work. I kept the D810 and long lenses in my vehicle right up until the R III was released. It resolved what few issues I had with the R II (battery life, speed, etc.). At the same time I purchased the Sony 100-400 and x2 converter. This is now my wildlife set-up and the Nikon is in the basement. Great video.

senaritra dutta Thanks for the comments. Yep, all good things to consider and trust me, I took all of that into account. I have been using Nikon for years and it would have been much, much easier for me to go with the 850. The 850 is a great camera no doubt! For me, the pros of the Sony won out over the pros of the 850 though. I dont do much night photography so the 12-24 is excellent for me. Custom modes and buttons are awesome. Size is awesome, charging the battery via usb while shooting, so nice, histogram in evf, so helpful, slog for video, love it, etc... Battery life in live view is much closer the comparing the nikon ovf as well... Certainly wish the Sony had full touch screen, intervilomter and focus stacking. Going to have to see on the weather proofing. That is for me though, certainly many will find the 850 better for them. Can't go wrong these days! Both insane good.

Not sure why you're a travel and landscape photographer but you want to switch to Sony, except the A99 ii, their E mount bodies are so delicate, If I go for street discreet shootings, I will grab my a7sii any day, but if i go on a long nation park trip, I wouldnt pick up the a7 bodies, instead, i rather pick up my canon or nikon ff bodies because. I can beat them up and completely trust their durability in the wild. Anyway, the A7r iii is a big step up for Sony, I do wish they offer bigger E mount ff bodies like the a99 ii with more weather sealed lenses.

iglyduckling. So far the riii is holding up great. I've had it in some tough conditions already and have been shooting with it a ton. I will use my rain cover a bit more just in case, but so far so good. We will see how it holds up over time.

@lvlcapblue6 жыл бұрын
Ditto, man! The only thing that sucks coming off the D810 for me is the ergonomics. The Nikon is the most comfy camera I've used, and the A7riii is probably the worst lol. I'm sure I'll get over it, at least I'm hoping.

@lvlcapblue6 жыл бұрын
JOHN TANG people who are complaining about the D850 being soft either have to improve their hold or use a tripod. High megapixels means you see microscopic camera shake. It shows where you need to improve your technique.

@Nikolas-hh6xx6 жыл бұрын
What's your reasoning?
@Nikolas-hh6xx6 жыл бұрын
@LuckyStrike This response made me feel a whole lot better about my decision, you bring a great point! The fact that I could just use that mc11 adapter would really just make the switch from Canon to Sony much easier for me. Sure, they may not be as good, but if it does a decent job then that will do for me. I also really appreciate the fact that this camera is stabilized, that's huge hit for me. One of the cons for me was also their native lenses being expensive. I was getting underwhelmed by what they offered, I felt like it wasn't enough compared to what Canon offers. The other con was that their touchscreen is not completely touchscreen, which I'm used to by now and find to be very helpful. I've only been shooting with Canon for over 6 years, but Sony continues to amaze me with their leap in technology with their cameras. I think I will make the switch after all... Thanks for the great feedback!

I got 3 big reasons NOT to buy an A7RIII : I bought on late December. February, first failure : colored zebra on my pictures. March second failure : choice of speed inconsistent (pictures once completely black, once completely white). April third failure : the camera records 3 times the same view, even though I chose the one shot mode (not 3 different pictures in continuous shooting). This camera is a nightmare !

You look like a big guy. You might want to pick up a D850 and a a7r3 and get a feel for how well they fit your hands before you order the Sony. The a7r3 has the ergonomics of a point-n-shoot, terrible. I'm a big guy also and the Sony doesn't fit well in my hands at all. No way would I own it, especially when the D850 pretty much does everything the Sony does, while having great ergonomics. The D850 isn't a heavy camera. Pick one up without a lens and see for yourself.
@minusinfinity69746 жыл бұрын
To be fair to the Nikon 14-24 of course it's much heavier, it's a full stop faster, as a 14-24 f/4 it would be closer in weight to the Sony. Having said that the Sony rivals primes like the Batis 18 f/2.8 for corner-to-corner sharpness and it's only weakness is poor flare resistance, if you like the sun in your image this is not the lens you want. Get a good prime for those occasions.
@DanBallard6 жыл бұрын

Lucky Strike , my camera ( brick) is attached to a 400mm 2.8 that weighs 11 pounds . Do I put that in my pocket also ? My point is that even if I’m shooting with this lens , my 200-500, 70-200, etc , none of these are going to fit into any pocket ? Now I get it , if I’m doing street photography the camera in pocket is great. But even when I do a portrait session I have several lenses, umbrellas, at least 3 light stands etc, so putting the body in my pocket would be nonsensical . I will say that I actually have shot several Sony’s , they are great . To me I had less to hold on too and I felt like my hands were just way to big . I like shooting my big body with a deep grip with the battery holder to support all of my fingers . Different strokes right ? Enjoy your Sony , and I mean that sincerely , but if you decided to shoot what I shoot you will find your Sony weight factor quickly disappear. Cheers .... bob

Lucky Strike, I really agree with much of what you say. I have a friend who switched from Canon to Sony . He actually retired from Canon, Virginia. He now enjoys taking walks with his Sony and has really changed his style of photography. We have a huge population of ospreys for half of the year. He used to be on the banks shooting with us as they dove for fish, now he shows up and takes pics of us ! Bottom line is he enjoys it .not for me but hey I haven’t reached the time in life where I’ve decided that I’ve learned enough :) I’ve enjoyed our conversation and I really think it’s possible for us both to be correct , we shoot different so we shoot with different tools. All the best .....bob

I am just a enthusiast photographer but i love the A7r iii and would buy it if i could afford it! But i just cant.. I am going to buy a A7r ii because it just dropped in price on the used market! I might by myself a few batteries to compensate for the bad battery life. Hope i dont regret it :o

Rafael Ebner So we have been using the ii a bit for the last few weeks. It is a Really great camera as well.
@karlroszko6 жыл бұрын
The “bad” battery life is a bit exaggerated. I use my a7ii while holding down continuous focus and I can still get through 2-3 hours of shooting on one battery. If you’re shooting 4k video and the camera is working hard that’s a different story but I think you’ll find the a7rii is a brilliant camera and the battery “issue” isn’t really that big
@robertsherrow36276 жыл бұрын
I’ve been using two SONY a7rii bodies for 2 1/2 years and the battery life issue is terribly exaggerated. I get about 350 images per battery charge and rarely need to use a second one on a shoot. Besides, with RAW image files running about 85 MB for each shot out of this 42MP camera, you’ll be more conscientious of your workflow in Lightroom and work smarter in the field. If you need to take more than 700 images in a day, I’d stay away from this size sensor and look at a 24MP option. Just my dos centavos...

Either than the phyical size(not the weight) due to the fact that it is a mirrorless, there is nothing much that you have said warrants a switch. As you kept comparing it to the D810 and not D850. I don't think you should mention lenses if you are talking about camera bodies, because that would result in another huge comparison of lenses between different manufacturers. Thanks for sharing your pictures, whatever works for you. Cheers.
@DanBallard6 жыл бұрын
Jay Chan Hi Jay, you are right, I doubt I would have switched if not for the size/weight. For me the size and weight are extremely important. I travel and backpack full time. I realize this is not the case for everyone, but for me it certainly is. I can't get an ultra wide lens from Nikon that is even close to as small or as sharp (or quite as wide), so talking about lenses does matter in this case. Yes, the other pros are just icing, but for me they all add up to an excellent setup that is crazy small. A7riii, 12-24, 85 1.8 and a ultra light travel tripod. That's it. To have that crazy small of a setup as a serious full time pro and not really have any major downsides is such a major game changer.
@JayChanKH6 жыл бұрын
Dan Ballard Yes, I guess you will have more reasons to switch than me. I'm looking more to get it as a duo body once the lens adaptors improve. I would think that you have 2xA7r3 to save space as compared to 2 Nikon bodies. As for lenses, Sigma and Tamron both has got wider lens and that is why we shouldn't be talking about that route. Thanks for sharing.
@deanbaird6 жыл бұрын
Still not much in terms of long glass for Sony. And I haven’t heard much praise for the menus/ergos. For landscape/travel pros, perhaps. I am but an “advanced amateur” who likes to shoot everything, including wildlife. With Nikon, I can choose between their 200-500 or Tamron’s 150-600, or two more 150-600s from Sigma. With Sony, there’s word of a 400 someday.

Maybe I'm missing something, but why are you comparing this to to a D810 and D800E? Why does this one camera replace both? Are you carrying the D800E just for landscapes due to no low-pass filter and the D810 for everything else? Shouldn't the comparison be with either the D810 or D800E? Not trying to be critical here, just an honest question.

Very nice review, with some fantastic images as well. I have just switched from Nikon and bought an A7RM3 and A7M3 and have been rejuvenated by these new tools. I am blown away by the latitude from shadows to highlights and just the whole ecosystem. I hope to get out and about and shoot more and more now. I don't believe the theory about it's the photographer and not the equipment, that makes the pictures, because just simply having faith in your equipment, can free your creative passion, so being able to really focus on the imagery and not worry too much about the tools. Just a comment on your video: I feel you could have made all the points your needed to make, in a video of about half the length of this video, although I felt your passion, for what you do very well, but you did tend to go on and on about the same stuff too many times. Otherwise, really really nice.

You fail to mention the 12-24 also can't take filters. And the touchscreen is a one trick pony. Can literally only touch to focus and thats it. Buffer speed is really slow also
@MyMomSaysImSmart6 жыл бұрын
The Nikon 14-24 also can't take filters. (so he likely already has a slide in filter kit like many landscape photographers do)
@DanBallard6 жыл бұрын
Hi Tyler, so I plan to put some tape or some other material around the ND filter and slide it inside the lens hood. We will see if that works! Of course it would be great if it accepted filters. Same debate as we have had for years with the Nikon 14-24. For me its worth it for the extra width with the Sony being so small and 4mm wider. It wasn't with the Nikon. I mainly used the 16-35. Yeah, I really wish the touch screen worked everywhere. Not a huge issue for me so far, the joy stick and wheel work fine, but it would be nice. Hopefully in a firmware update.... For my landscape and travel the buffer isn't really something I think about, so no worries for me. Maybe an issue for others, I have no idea.
@josephroybal7366 жыл бұрын
Tyler, NiSi makes a 150mm filter holder for it and can hold all 150mm filters with 2mm width - amzn.to/2C7kgXZ.
@GifCoDigital6 жыл бұрын
Tyler yes buffer speed is slow if you dont spend the money on a proper SD card (Sony's being one of the only ones with a high enough WRITE speed not read that most card advertise). Also touch screen can be used to zoom and pan around images in playback mode so that is two things not one. Not that that matters though touch screen is huge benefit for video focus so even if it only did that one thing why the fuck do you have to bitch about that. I smell a Nikon but hurt fanboy i think!!

I jumped last January from 15 years of Nikon, and it was a bit early. The 7rii was a great studio camera, but needing faster focus on the fly in mixed lighting, it left me unimpressed. Once the A9 hit I felt better about my decision to move to Sony, and now with the 7riii in my hands, it's a great pairing. Anyone still dogging Sony at this point is just uninformed. I wish Nikon all the best, but if they do not move quickly, they will lose their base forever.
