And 5 years later of all these three companies, Sony offers the widest and cheapest mirrorless lens catalogue from their own line and from third party manufacturers. After Fuji X, it's also Sony the one with the largest number of APS-C lenses.

I switched back from Sony to Nikon D850 (was Nikon shooter for ages before) because of more defects in Sony cameras and lenses I ever thought could have happened. Probably I just wasn't that lucky. IQ on any of these cameras can be great and I am convinced that the photographer in most cases is the limiting factor😉 and not the camera. I am with you that the AF button of the D850 is poorly placed and would be great if it were possible to place it somewhere else via firmware update. I helped myself with programming the FN1 with AF-area mode + AF On to switch from the standard single point AF. I almost never shoot videos therefore the only real weak point AF in live view is of no importance to me. I adjusted the color balance of the monitor one to the right and one down and am very happy with the colors. Yes and I like your reviews as you know to shoot good pics which is far from being standard among all the wannabe bloggers. Ernst

I’ve seen other channels discuss these cameras. But this is the first one I’ve seen that has given examples and critiques without just talking about it and being impartial. I do have film photography background. In February 2017 I received an entry level Nikon as a gift, and purchased speedlites, a zoom lens and other equipment. A month ago after a year of use, and careful research, i bought a Nikkor 50mm 1.8G Prime lens which works with both APS-C and full frame. It is phenomenal. If I thought about giving my son my existing body and use the new lens with a new Nikon body or switch to Sony or Canon. Now that I’ve seen this comparison, I will stick with Nikon. I shoot minor hockey photographs. The D85O would be a great choice considering the dynamic range and frame rate, and other features that are not in my existing camera. The Nikon system is the best choice for me.

Excellently done testing. I shoot the Nikon D850 and have large hands, so the Sony is out of the equation. Just this afternoon I had one in my hands at the camera store and my middle finger gets crushed between the hand grip and the lens. It's too darned small. The Canon? It has all the features that should have gone into the 5D3 five years ago. The photo quality I'm getting from my Nikon D850 is astonishing. Portrait have a 3D look to them that the others can't produce. Thanks guys.

Switched from top-end Canon gear (40 years a Canon user) to Sony last Januray and would never go back to Nikon or Canon DSLRs. Have Sony A7R3 (upgraded from A7R2) and also A6500, and love them both. Four decades a pro.

Thanks for this review. As someone who has shot Sony A7 series for the past 2 years (and Nikon and Canon for many years prior) I found this helpful as I look at possibly going back to a DSLR, mostly for ergonomics, UI, robust build, and a few other things. I haven't read all the replies here so apologies if this has been done in some form already, but your review inspired me to check weights and costs for the above 3 cameras with 3 common zooms - 16-35 (f/4 in this example since I didn't see a Nikon 16-35 f/2.8), 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8. Here are the total packages (cost / weight in pounds) as taken from specs and prices on B&H: Sony - $9,242 / 7.79 Nikon - $8,988 / 8.58 Canon - $7,996 / 8.16

at 17:34, it's really showing Canon extra magenta tone on the white shirt, the Sony's white is better. This is really good review from real working photographers, not like bunch of other youtubers sitting indoor and talking about specs, real life hands on reviews like this are always great and fun to watch! For me personally, I still use Canon bodies for Wedding (zoom lenses) and wildlife/adventure where more lens options are available and they can get beaten up by weather, I use Sony for videos and prime zeiss / GM lenses because it offers IBIS!

Currently using the nikkor 14-24mm2.8G, 24-70mm2.8G, 70-200mm2.8FL, 50 and 85mm. so i decided to get the Nikon D850. hopefully it was a good investment.great review also. I own the a7R III, agree on the setup and Eye AF, seems like a fair review. I was a Canon user for 15 years, I sold everything and moved the the a7R III. Combinations of silent shooting, IBIS, BSI Sensor, size, EVF, and video features. I shoot with mostly primes, I have the 55mm 1.8, 35mm 2.8, 85mm 1.8 and the 24-105mm F4. I did not feel like those were that over priced. And the 35mm 2.8 on the a7R III is such a small carry around package for daily shooting.

I always did shoot prime lenses a lot, my go to on the Canon was the 35mm F2 IS, but the IBIS really shines with fast primes. If your subject is still, you can shoot crazy low light photos handheld.

@OrlandoMac
@OrlandoMac 6 жыл бұрын
Afonso Campos depends on what you are shooting 24-70mm if you are an event shooter or portrait pro is the better option as it is better in low light and gives you the shallow depth of field you get to separate the subject from the background, the f4 is better for a travel shooter or street photographer who doesn't want to change lenses in between, it is versatile and gives you more reach and less scary and weight than switching to a 70-200 mm which can be intimidating and heavy to carry.

I went to Sony for a while, came back to Canon, shooting the 5D Mark IV. I am a hybrid shooter but a one man band; the dual pixel AF in video is flat out amazing. The CLOG 4k just produces an amazing image that is easier to color grade than SLOG. The 1.7x crop isn't a big deal to me, it just feels like shooting with a 7D or something, that is 1.6x crop, I can't really tell a difference. 30 MP is a nice sweet spot. For me, I don't find the Nikon footage to look that great but more than that, no log, no dual pixel, it has to be Sony or Canon for me. Either one will do really but I prefer the Canon still, some because of ergonomics, flash systems, lenses, etc. When I look at the 4K files the Canon absolutely looks the best but some people don't like the 1.7 crop.

Sorry but I did not find your review helpful because you show a lot of motion in your video of your model and you guys taking pictures, but when it comes to comparing the pictures you have taken you give one second which is insufficient to even glance over. When I’m looking for reviews of cameras I need to see the difference in those cameras and pictures they take, not the process how you guys do the shooting and reviewing. Hope this helps in your future videos.

A helpful round-up. This is a tough decision. An investment really. It isn’t just about the best camera, you have to take the lens ecosystem into account. (As well as company history - to consider what they might do in the future) So the more user and real world experience I can digest, the better. Thanks for the review.

6:20 The eye autofocus probably focused on flowers because you are Using it by holding a middle button where the control wheel is. What happens when you press the shutter button, your finger stops holding eye AF button, and focus goes to standard mode. Thats why there is a Focus Lock button on lenses, to set the Eye AF there. I was shooting through flowers today and for the past 2 years with eye AF, NEVER EVER camera focused on something else. EYE AF Cant focus on sometheng else except the eye. You have to hold AF Lock to the end, after the pic taken

I am still considering the A7r3 but as a mostly sports-wildlife shooter, the D850 is the clear winner. For wedding, you would know much better. If I did more portraits I think it would be a much harder decision. Also glad to see you think the D850 has the best AF; a lot of us wildlife shooters have found the D850 AF very good, but not as good as the D500 (which is still a better wildlife shooter 90% of the time). The D850 is really a jack of all trader and failure at Live View (which I used maybe 1% of the time). In all reality, all 3 of the cameras are excellent. The native glass for Canon is impressive, the Sony features are pushing the boundaries, and Nikon has pushed the DSLR to new limits. I think whichever system you are currently invested is the one you should stay.

Only Sony allows you to see what you get, using the EVF is a game changer - you know exactly what you get and though it may be fuzzy/grainy in dim light it still allows you to almost 'see in the dark' which neither Canon nor Nikon does using their OVFs. Also the Sony is the only camera that allows you to pack a small kit with primes. Also the silent shooting option is very nice. That being said all of these cameras are excellent.

...If you shoot weddings, you have go with the Sony, just because of the silent shutter. This is such a killer feature, wich stands out against the others. It's the future. But I think, we will see this in 2018 from Nikon and Canon, too. You want a cheap 24-70 F2.8 for the Sony, just buy the A-mount Tamron version an put it on the A7RIII via the LA-EA3. Those A-mount lenses are now so fast on the new E-Mount bodies. Love it ...

I played around with the D850, 5D IV and the A7R III for a few weeks, and while I preferred the size of the DSLRs, I just could not ignore the fact that the A7R III performed better for my needs. So, I chose the Sony route and soon upgraded to the A7R IV, which, in my opinion, blows both D850 & 5D IV out of the water. Especially when you consider the live tracking AF feature of the A7R IV. That said, I'm very excited to see the EOS R5 when it releases. I'm a little skeptical based on where Canon was and how far they would have had to have come to the EOS R5.

So it all comes down to personal preferences and specific use. My D810 and D500 are great but I just find that the images are just so spot on, the new sensor is the best I’ve seen on a Nikon. I’ve never really understood the weight /size issue . Hey Robert I've shot with a D810 since it came out and I have to say, I am looking for something smaller ... but I am old and not the young pup I once was and big cameras are just becoming too much for me. Still, IMO the D850 is such a better camera - Sony kills it on video, but I do not shoot video, ever - but my problem is the D850 is a large camera, not so much heavy. It just feels heavy because of the lens you might put on it. so I am considering the Sony A7riii, but then again, maybe if I got some smaller primes for Nikon it wouldn't seem so big. It is just a tough one for me ... but you will all face it one day (just like me) when you get old.

I’m shooting the d810 and d500 love them both. But the d500 af system smokes the d810 in speed . It’s just a joy to use . I see the d850 like a super d810 , high res high speed and the colors look less over saturated on the d850 vs the d810. The d850 is so close to being everything I want and need . If it had the dual pixel af of the Canon, what could stop it . And people pay attention to the weights of the Sony glass . I’ve read the 24-70 and 70-200 are heavier than the Canon and Nikon counterparts. So lighter smaller body with heavier glass and buttons that are packed close together may mean poor and difficult handling. I love the handling and grip of my Nikons. I shoot without straps of any kind up to 20hours on the extreme side . The grip on the Nikon bodies allows me to hold with my finger tips and never coming close to dropping. Peace y’all

Best review I've seen so far. Thanks for the quality of the content. You won a subscriber ;) If you were starting from 0 and the weight of the camera was not a relevant factor -because of the weight/size of the lenses- would you also choose Sony for the final image? You think that with the MC 11 adapter or the Metabones we will lose too much in the Sony Body? (I read that Sigma is coming soon with native lenses for Sony, but I find interesting to have lenses with the adaptor because we never know if in the future Canon will come back again. (Or in the case we use different bodies for different jobs). When will you have available the raw files?

Appreciate that!!! Awesome to have you as a sub. I would definitely pick Sony if live view means anything to you. It's great for shooting over your head, low to the ground, on tripods, or for shooting video. If I was starting from scratch, I'd get all native Sony lenses unless you shoot mostly landscape or non moving images. The adapters work and the Sigma lenses/adapters are certainly the best but it's not nearly as quick and reliable as Sony glass for autofocus. Should have the RAW files up later tonight!

I have always shot Nikon, most recently D800 and now D810. The D850 will be my next cam but I'm not in a rush and want to see what Nikon does in the mirrorless space. I expect both crop and full frame options this year. I'll pass on Canon, no interest. Sony has been making huge gains but it's a lateral move at best from a D850. There isn't enough benefit for me to switch systems and buying new lenses would be very expensive. I can't even replace like for like as I have lenses from 14mm up to 500mm. Nikon is still the best option for me, but nice to see competition as it forces everyone to improve.

what focus mode was used on the sony, when trying to get eye-af thru the weeds? comment indicated af-s: "it will focus on the eye, but once i take the picture it goes oof"... for eye-af, it should have been shot with af-c, using back-button af, the shutter would have had no effect on the focusing... use a proper portrait lens for shooting people, like the gm85/1.4, because it's faster and it has a focus limiter that probably would have made a difference with the weeds in the field situation. canikon does not have anything like eye-af, for weddings and portraits and such sony is the way to go... most people pick the a9 for that tho, because the af is a bit better.

Wonderful Unbiased video! I was on the fence about a picture with no editing and no guessing on blurr during one shot opportunities like weddings... you can count on Sony because what you shoot is what you get(mirrorless advantage). I'm currently a Canon 70D user of 3 years and seriously about to make the jump to full frame. I'm pretty sure I'm leaning toward the Sony A7 III (much better reviews than the R for the price). Nice job! Dan, here is a tip for Nikon focus modes. I keep the camera in Continuous focus 100% of the time. Then, I have the AF-ON button set to lock focus. So, I use the shutter button to focus and take photos, then lock the focus when needed with the AF-ON button. Try it! I like it much better than switching focus modes.

FYI you don't turn off Eye AF - you either press a button to use it or you simply don't. In this particular case it didn't work so well but in almost every other scenary it is fantastic. And it's an option that is not even available if you're using Canon or Nikon bodies. So it can hardly be a negative in my book :)

Thanks Mike! I would definitely have a tough time shooting adapters for a wedding. I've found the AF to be less reliable although it is definitely improving. But I would be absolutely fine taking an RIII to a wedding. However, reliability has been less than stellar so far and I've heard of firmware updates messing things up so just an FYI. Plus it is very advanced and sometimes changing one setting will affect 3 other things so make sure you know the camera. We have had no issues so far with the A7RIII.

Where do these cameras rate in low light AF accuracy? Receptions tend to be dark... As a budget Nikon wedding shooter with a D750, would you recommend a jump to the Sony or just upgrade to the D850?? Great vid guys!

Nice comparison and footage guys. I'm a nikon shooter and the D850 seems to win out in so many ways. Oddly enough I'm considering switching to Canon for their glass; esp wide angle, tilt shift and macro. When body and available lenses are considered together, the comparison becomes more difficult and frankly aggravating as hell.

I mean the quality is good, but you have to be willing to shoot video without AF on the D850 so the A7RIII is probably a better choice for you. It was shot mainly on the GH5 but a couple shots in the city were the Canon 6D Mark II

When you factored in the weight of systems did you also account for the extra batteries to achieve the same shots? For example, you can carry 1 battery for a D850 for an entire day, where as the Sony would need 2-3 minimum. Also G Master lenses are no lighter than the Canon and Nikon Pro glass. At 85G a pop, a A7R3 with 3 spare batteries is the same weight as a D850 with 1 battery (Sony 530 shots CIPA, D850 shots 1840 CIPA). The Sony system is lighter if you don't have a lens, and minimal after that.

The Sony battery life on the A7RIII is amazing. I don't care what the specs say, I rarely change batteries on the Sony and easily make it through shoots. With the Sony you do less image previewing since with the EVF you can see your image as you are shooting it! Chimping is over so that's probably why. We were using the 24-70 lenses mostly and the Nikon 24-70 F2.8 VR is over 1/2 lb heavier than the Sony 24-70 GM plus the 1/2lb difference in the camera itself is absolutely noticeable after 8hours with the camera hanging off your shoulder. Looks like the 70-200 F2.8 is closer with the nikon being .25lbs heavier

The Canon just trails in almost every respect here. Still a good camera, but well behind from sensor to AF. It's tough times for Canon fans these days. The Sony is awesome except that it handles like poop. Put any heavy lenses on the Sony and it will hurt your hand. I wonder if she shot a long event with the Sony, because the grip is too small to leverage and balance larger lenses. I have no idea how Nikon will solve that issue with their own mirrorless. The D850 is the best for ergonomics and does just about everything great. Add the 24-70 and new 70-200 FL along with some primes and you can shoot just about anything, plus there are amazing long zoom options like the 200-500 AFS VR, just as sharp at 500mm as my 200-400 F4 was at 400mm. Nikon has amazing stuff and a clear leader for now.

My Lexar 2000x (UHS-II) can clean the buffer of my 80D in 5 seconds. I agree the buffer is a bit short but it can be clean rapidly with good cards...
@kevindiossi
@kevindiossi 6 жыл бұрын
It's really disappointing that you continued to critique the Canon 5D Mark IVs buffer. You were shooting on a UHS-I slot versus the other cameras both having UHS-II. The Canon offers a UDMA Compact Flash slot that would allow for a deeper buffer and quicker image review. The SD slot is really only good for JPEG backup when shooting continuous. It's a weak spot of the camera for sure, but you should have, at the very least, mentioned that the CF slot would help.
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 6 жыл бұрын
+Kevin DiOssi we shoot dual raw almost always so we are always limited by the slowest slot so that's how we tested. The D850 did not have a QXD card for example which would have made it even faster!

Dan Watson then the Sony should have been tested on its slowest slot as well. The D850 has a really great advantage over the other cameras, which is awesome. But you also know that writing to both cards at once also slow things down on it's own too. Canon REALLY had no excuse for UHS-I in 2016.

Bojan Glamocak nice troll! I work with Canon and Nikon gear, as I've personally watched four Sony cameras fail in the field over the past two years. Until recently, they were not reliable cameras for people outside of KZbin nutswingers. Obsolete is a strong word to describe Canon, considering my career hasn't been affected by Sony or any other camera brand. I'm not asked what I shoot before I'm hired, I'm employed because of my work...and that has only increased. My cameras haven't stopped working because something has more features. Not to mention everyone I work with shoots Canon and Nikon. I rarely see Sony gear in the real world and when I do, it's usually a videographer/hybrid shooter....and I would know this because I actually leave my house (in your case, perhaps your parent's basement?) and travel the world as a paid photographer. But hey, Canon is obsolete - period.

Kevin dude the buffer actually has less to do with the memory card than you think. Buffer capacity is largely dictated by onboard camera memory (sort of like RAM or L2 Cache) that stores the images while they are being written to the card one by one

Thank you for yet another great video and review, guys :) I have the Sony A7RIII, and a lot of Canon L glass. So far, I have only one Sony lens, the new 24-105/4. But the Canon glass works great with Sony using the latest Metabones V adapter. It is a game changer. I tried out the IV version with the A7RII last year, but not happy with that. The new version V has no focus issues with any of my Canon glass (except for the 100 macro in macro mode, but that I focus manually anyway) on the A7RIII , and you also get proper metadata from the lens, meaning the actual lens name comes up in Lightroom metadata, and you can use Canon lens profiles in LR - you could not do that with the version IV. Tracking sports with the Canon 100-400 is a breeze with the Sony/Metabones V. I will highly recommend to get the battery grip for the Sony, though. The camera is just too small to hold comfortably without the grip, especially with longer lenses, but makes a big difference also with smaller size lenses. Holding the camera simply becomes more relaxed and sturdy with the battery grip on. I tried out the Canon 5D mkIV as a possible replacement for my mkIII, but I found the improvements so minor that it was just not worth the money. The Sony A7RIII just feels and performs like a modern camera, taking advantage of new technology to improve (most important) your images and your user experience. So, still very happy as a mixed Sony/Canon shooter, and will remain so, I think. Only depends on what Canon have up their sleeve :) www.canonrumors.com/more-information-about-the-new-camera-line-cr1/

Hey! So honestly I'd upgrade to the Canon R6 if you were planning on keeping your lenses. There will be a significant drop in autofocus performance using adapters with Canon lenses on a Sony camera and that wouldn't be worth the switch in my opinion. Using adapters on Canon lenses was OK about 5 years ago but now the AF performance when using Sony lenses on sony cameras is SOOO good I'd hate to see you lose some of that performance using Canon lenses and adapters

I'm a long time amateur Canon user (50 years) and primarily a landscape photographer. I was a very slow switch from film to digital and also a very slow switch from low dynamic range to high dynamic range. My wait for the HDR Canon sensor is over. I'm trading my substantial gear for a Sony. The recent announcement of E-mounts for Sigma Art lenses relieves the lens expense problem a bit. [ PS:The video was aimed at wedding photography - not my cup of tea, but I was mulling over how the newer Sony a7III would do with the eye tracking - then I saw the comment below that the a7R3 eye tracking in the video was most likely accidentally turned off by the user]

Loved that you related to your specific use cases (e.g. weddings) that you find yourselves shooting in-it is truly what matters when making decisions. There is no doubt that all of these camera’s will deliver great pics. It ultimately comes down to what you are going to use it for IMHO. I personally am not there on the Sony. The company while, innovating rapidly, which is forcing Nikon and Cannon to up their game, is also too willing to leave customers behind (can a get an amen a-mount folks). Perhaps in a few more iterations after they demonstrate they will stay true to a standard I’d consider them. I will not deny that the RIII is a great camera... Also, I’d like you to weigh the A7rIII with a g series vs a Nikon/Cannon with the same lens. I’d bet the weight is less than a lb difference, and for me that is not significant, but I don’t carry the camera around all day either (to be fair). Regardless, I bet all of them weigh less than my wife’s purse. :0 Plus, in the event of a zombie apocalypse the Nikon can also double as a great melee weapon! Overall, great job!

Gary Ross As a Nikon D810 to A7RIII convert, let me give you some counter arguments. As an old time Minolta film shooter, I can tell you that A mount is more a story of a Sony not ditching Minolta shooters. A-mount didn't make sense for their mirrorless initiatives but they haven't given up on those folks. Frankly A99 is not a bad camera (those specs would look great on a Canon). Secondly, this whole argument that Sony innovates too fast seems like case of sour grapes. Between companies that make quick changes based on what their consumers say they need (like battery life, burst rate, grip, etc.) and companies that ignore consumers desire for a workable live view, for handling that's just not "made for a man", for video options that live up to the expectations of someone paying a hefty price for these cameras, yes, I pick Sony. Lastly, there are times when I actually prefer a beefier camera body, like when I have my 85 1.4 or a 70-200 2.8 hooked for an event or portraits. There are other times when I prefer a smaller body connected to a wide to mid angle prime to hike for a nice landscape shot or for street photography. Any idea which of these cameras offers the versatility to have both options. I recently was taking some family portraits with the A7R III with the 70-200 and the battery grip attached. Discussing our future vacation plans, I was asked if I was going to take my giant camera with me. I removed the grip and put on my Zeiss 55 1.8 and said I am taking this small one. Try that with with the D850.
@garyross9163

I think you missed my point. First off I think Sony innovation is very good for photography and has forced Nikon and Canon as I stated before to step up their game that is not a dig on Sony that’s a compliment. However it is disrespectful to Dan to take away from the comments on his review to have a Nikon versus Sony discussion that is not my intent nor should it be anyone else’s in this thread-the only thing that our focus should be is giving Dan good feedback on his video. As I stated, I like that he related his review to real shooting situations as well as key factors such as ergonomics etc. the rest is just my preference as stated. Apologies to Dan and the group, if my comment was taken as anything but that-my feedback only. As Ansel Adams stated the only thing that really matters is the what is behind the camera.

Most photos for events are with a speedlight. You need to include flash with your reviews. Mount a speedlight on a Sony mirrorless and its a big issue. I don't understand how you cannot include that in a review especially if you are a wedding photog. Not to mention the Nikon CLS and even Canon will beat Sony's flash. And tell everyone which camera profile you are using to compare photos in LR. Otherwise your comparison photos are incorrect. Adobe Standard will render different than Camera Standard and you should use respective camera profiles and white balance proper to have fair comparisons.

This was a great video guys, thank you. I do have some nit picks however, while I agree Sony glass is quite expensive, it is not quite up to the Nikon cost, (yes until a couple days ago there were no third part options for Sony, but Sigma fixed that) but just speaking of the pro lenses from Nikon to Sony, Nikon still has Sony beat is the crazy money category, granted, not by a lot, but still. I dropped $2800 on the Nikon 70-200 E and the Sony is a couple hundred less, same situation with the 24-70 of Nikon's. Though glass was a big reason for me not to switch( until the a7iii got announced anyway) I just feel like Nikon is the king of expensive glass.

As for the lens: I considered the 24-240mm because of the great versatility, as I don't want to carry many lenses while travelling. IQ of that lens is not the ideal though. I believe the the Nikon would allow for you to ad the autofocus button to the AE-L/AF-L custom command button that is right of the viewfinder. Just a heads up.

I am still torn between all 3... What would you recomend to someome who hasnt invested into any company yet. Team Canon? Team Nikon or Sony? If money isnt an issue

Right now I'd say Sony 1st, Nikon 2nd, and Canon 3rd unless you shoot video in which case I'd eliminate the Nikon. But that's the simple answer. It also depends on what you shoot and how you shoot.

The D850 is a game changer. I shoot Canon, but this camera might make me switch. The detail I got out of the 850 is simply superior. Im not talking about pixel peeping even clients can notice the difference. Canon has just been way to incremental and conservative.

I want to consult you professionally. Which camera is better for wedding photography ? Sony A7R3? Nikon D850?

It really depends a lot on what you own/shoot/style of shooting and more. Both are great cameras and so is the 5D Mark IV which has been our wedding camera of choice for years. If you want something a bit more in depth, head here: kit.com/learningcameras/d850-vs-a7riii-vs-5d4 and click "chat with Dan" to setup a short consultation so I can look at what you do, your images, business, and determine what might be best!

Hey Guys, loved your take on these. Would like to hear you thoughts on the new Canon 6d 2 compared to the 5d 4. Does it work well as a cheaper full frame option.

I actually shot some of the video with the 6D Mark II. Unfortunately it doesn't offer the same still or video quality that the 5D4 does so if that is important, look at the 5D4. I will hopefully have my full review on that up shortly
