Here what I personally think about what to do in a knife fight: 0. DO NOT BE THERE! Use ambient and context awareness to AVOID SUCH EVENTS AT ALL COST (avoid dangerous cities/quartiers, avoid to be alone, avoid dark places, analize people/situations around you and instinctively detect danger, avoid confrontations, avoid to show valuable items, GIVE VALUABLE ITEMS TO THE ROBBER IN ORDER TO STOP THE ATTACK, ...) 1. BE EQUIPPED: WEAR PROTECTION CLOTHES that cannot be cut (kevlar shirts, rivetted chainmails, ...), keep with you a very powerful torch/flashlight, if viable and legal in your country keep a ranged weapon (gun, taser, peper spray, baton, kubotan, ... according with your country's laws) with you every time, especially (at night) if you visit new areas, new city or you sense that in you area the danger level is high or is going up. 2. BE FIT/TRAINED mentally and physically (be confident and SHOW confidence, be fit and SHOW your fitness, train your reflexes, be prepared/trained for bad situations, you should be fit enough to run at maximum speed for a considerable amount of time and enough to overcome some basic obstacles (walls, fences, differences in heights, gaps, ...), BE TRAINED in close quarter combats/mma/self defense tecniques/martial arts ... 3. RUN AWAY AT ALL COSTS: KEEP IN MIND THAT IF YOU NOT SUCCED IN THIS TASK YOU WILL BE QUITE SURELY INJURED NO MATTER WHAT! Detect danger, use reflexes, put in place a quick useful diversion (use torch/flashlight, throw item at them, ...) and go away form the danger (in combination with ambient awareness in order to know how to follow an escape part that is possible AND is viable for you). IF AND ONLY IF YOU CANNOT RUN AWAY BECAUSE IT IS IMPOSSIBLE OR YOU SHOULD STAY TO PROTECT SOMEONE YOU CARE THAT CANNOT RUN FAST AS YOU, then continue with the next points: 4. ATTRACT ATTENTION FROM POLICE OR OTHER PEOPLE: use allarm sounds, whistles, yells, ... to attract attention: be prepared to not find anyone who wants to help you or to be involved into some trouble/fight. Police also is not ubiquitous so prepare not to find any officer. In any case it is a necessary attempt. 4. BE PREPARED TO BE INJURED: mentally fit means also that you need to keep fighting even if you will be injured: good training, cold mind and adrenaline will keep you up for a while even if you are severely injured and htat can make the difference from life and death 5. FIGHT USING A RANGED WEAPON (you a re trained with): guns (if viable in your country), tasers (if viable in your country), pepper guns/sprays (professional ones), or other effective blunt ranged weapons if trained in that weapon. If you don't/can't carry a weapon use improvised weapons of any kind that you can find in the ambient (remind ambient awareness) and use them for diversion or as weapons (bottles, chairs, pans, kitchen knives, ...) 6. FIGHT WITH YOUR BARE HANDS if necessary and as long as you can't escape or neutralize the menace. In order to protect form a knife you should be trained in such situation: you will be cut anyway but if you know the right tecniques and you have trained them A LOT maybe it si possible to overcome the menace. Goof martial arts for this are specific soldier training, Krav Maga, classical Jujitsu, Kali, ... But the difference is based on the amount of specific training, reflexes and strengt of your body. 7. ESCAPE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Your duty is not to kill, empair or arrest your attacker: your duty is to keep you and the people you care alive! Escape from danger event/zone/attacker(s) as soon as possible quickly and fast as you can.

I do think some of these techniques really work out, as I have tested them myself. The first disarm can work, if you perform it correctly and the movement is forceful. The Bench throw works quite well too. Still, fights irl won't look that clean, but if you have the opportunity to execute one of these techniques, they might even work out... Or just run away, as that's still the best thing to do.

@@lfischer3020 That's the most plausible scenario. Running in zig-zag could work if you are running like 30km/h at least or if the person is a very poor shooter. The First technique I’ve stress tested before and it’s difficult to execute because it creates an opportunity to lose control. Rather than circling the wrist to the outside and using the other arm to guild into and elbow lock it’s better to grab and pluck the elbow with your free hand and use shoot your newly freed forearm into where the attackers forearm and humerus, establishing a hammer lock. This approach is more direct and leaves little room for escape

satyavrat soral Yes and No. Depends on you and your attacker.. These techniques MIGHT work but you WILL get stabbed or cut, that's the rrality. Someone who has a cold weapon isn't someone that plans on letting you off easily so best thing to do is block, counterstrike *simultaneously* and then run away.. assuming you're not cornered. I've been in a situation where someone pulled a knife on me so i know what works, though of course, this person had no self defense knowledge...he was just some asshole wannabe gangster who wanted to mug me. also, he had a cheap pocket knife soo..yeah. i wouldn't trust my life on the techniques alone though.

Most of these techniques look good but are highly unlikely to work in a real life situation. Even if the defender could grab the knife hand of the attacker, he's not gonna wait for him to finish the technique. The attacker will fight for his weapon and will likely get his arm free again as one hand holding the wrist isn´t very powerful. If the defender really wants to isolate the weapon he should lock the attackers arm firmly under his armpit or with both hands and proceed to kick him. Also the techniques with the stick. We tried all that during our Krav Maga training, if you encounter somebody who can´t really handle a knife or a stick you have better chances but if your attacker knows how to use these things you will have a very hard time...

It's all mostly horse shit, it's hard to get anywhere near someone when they have a knife. If you're in an open area a very simple block and strike just to stun them a bit then run away is better but in your home or an enclosed space taking control of the arm and knife would be better as opening doors will slow you down and make it easier for them to catch up. Sticks in enclosed spaces maybe that shit would work but they're even longer than knives so you'll more than likely be hit in the head a few times, getting a hold of a lightweight wooden one wouldn't be too hard but the heavy and long ones will fuck you up.

I have just one question, we have these conditions: - I have a long melee weapon, let's say a baseball bat or an axe - very close quarters - I can't escape without engaging in a fight first - I don't have time to make a full swing with my weapon It may sound dumb, but I took attention to it while playing DayZ. When something is very close, there's an animation, where a character pushes this weapon from this body with the help of the hand further from the handle in order to give a strike doable in very close quarters. Is it actually viable? Is it strong enough blow to get rid of an attacker?
@ketakitten

That would work with an axe, but is unlikely with a bat. With a bat, you should learn how to parry an attack and use the opportunity to take out your opponent.

I've been on both sides of the knife and the only way to stop a knife is to grab the blade directly, hold on to it, and hurt them as badly as you can with your other hand and the rest of your body until they let it go. Will your hand be torn to absolute hell, ...YES... will you be less likely to die by being willing to sacrifice a hand....Yes. I've used a knife when I had five bastards try to crack my skull open with tire irons and baseball bats. If you have a blade and they have impact weapons just dodge their swings and get in as fast and as close as you can, don't bother trying to deflect their swings or to control their weapons because you will get crushed and one hit has so much blunt force it makes you feel like you have been stabbed yourself followed by temporary hearing loss, lack of feeling, and disorientation.

Fallacy on 1:05: while it was right of that dude to block his opponent's attack before trying to grab his opponent's wrist to try and disarm his opponent, he didn't close the distance (get closer to his opponent), and that would allow the opponent to just pull his hand back and break free (see this video as an example, link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIecgpmdf8pjpMU) If you're going to try and go for a disarm, then close the distance (get closer to your opponent) so he can't yank his arm back, and away, otherwise he's just going to do that and break free of your hold

Anybody who does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, have you had a chance to bench throw someone? It totally catches your opponent off guard.

Very first if you see a knife and you have a chance to escape, RUN! If can not, you must fight as you fight for your life "and that is really the truth" third cut your hand and arm but you can disarm your oponent, means you live, even with injuries

I wonder why liver shot aren't demonstrated, any punch to the side to the liver will cause a the body to make a survival reaction as it affect nerves causing veins & arteria to dilate and heart beating to slow down, the brain will force one to the ground to prevent oxygen deprivation to it It also can cause permanent liver damage though
