Shooting at blurry shapes that are supposedly killing other people you can't see 12 hours of waiting? Nobody would go to see that. Hey Shooter, as a Marine and one from the Helicopter community I can say that shooting the rotorhead of a helicopter is the safest bet in this case (since it is a movie) 1- the rotors move so fast, that shooting a pilot through the blades is not feasible, and round deflection is 100% guarantee 2- if you shoot a pilot, you have a co-pilot to deal with, tactic of recovering from a shooting scenario such as this.would be to turn 90degrees from the point of impact, raise the nose, climb for distance and atmosphere interference, and then evasion tactical flight 3- this is only a movie, and as such what we are seeing is not usually undertaken in combat, as the best manner to engage a Helo is to try to shoot at it from the side or at least under the rotor arch, as it was wonderfully used in Vietnam and then in Afghanistan against the Russians. Great video, and keep up the LRS

@oscargrouch79624 жыл бұрын
Hey Luis, as a former US Army soldier from the helicopter community (an enlisted helicopter mechanic then a warrant officer helicopter pilot) I can say the rotorheads are made of thick steel (or titanium on Apaches) because they have to support the weight of the helicopter and G forces while maneuvering and by far the NOT even close to a good bet for being destroyed by small arms fire. Do not believe what you see in the movies. Bullets do not just spark and deflect off helicopters. Helicopter rotorblades are not made of steel (nor titanium) and are not bulletproof and certainly do NOT deflect bullets. Older helicopter rotor blades are thin aluminum alloy skin on aluminum honeycomb. Newer helicopter are composite fiber skins over composite honeycomb. Bullets will pass through rotor blades not be deflected. Also, the rotors move fast but bullets move much faster than rotor blades and there is a lot of space between blades of even a four blade system for bullets to pass. Most helicopter windshields are thin plexiglass that will not stop bullets except Apache windshields which have thick laminated plexiglass. The most effective evasive maneuver for a helicopter when taking fire is to immediately turn (which you typed) then fly behind cover (we called it "masking") NOT climb and expose yourself to more fire.

@@Bikini_ST The director was Clint Eastwood, and Eastwood probably used gas guns so he could run a camera rig in front of the firing line. The idea of using a remote camera on a rig likely didn't occur to him since the guy learned film making in the 70s and 80s, remote camera rigs weren't a thing then so he's not super familiar with them. Also a real range is more expensive to rent than a fake one, and you'd have to pay a firearms safety guy to be on scene for real rifles since even smart actors are half retarded. They can't all be George Miller and shoot the whole thing chronologically with mostly practical effects and clever compositing. Plus Eastwood is much more an actors director, he's all about that tight direction for his performers with the rest kinda taking a back seat. The most jarring thing for me when I started long range shooting was how very little magnification most optics have. Even 9x seems small for 450 yards (though since I've gotten really good at shooting 450 yards with iron sights on my AR-15). My brother and I tried a crack at the 1KYD high power range using his .30-06 Winchester XPR, and we learned real fast that beyond 600 yards, a spotter scope is absolutely critical, as at 1KYDs, we had no idea where the bullets were going (couldn't even see the dirt kick up at such a long range through his 9x Leupold). This was jarring, because all my life, I imagined sniping to be like it's shown in movies and video games; it is not... at all. It's actually quite difficult, and requires a lot of math and knowledge of your rifle, ammo, and environment. Gave me a real appreciation for the guys who figured out how to launch a probe to Mars. I'd call that a moon shot, but that's even more impressive! You know your shot is long when it requires calculating the rotation of more than one planet, lol!

@@juanvaldez6321 Lol! Yeah, that's a bit absurd for a .22LR! I would recommend you practice with your irons first, and practice fundamentals like trigger control, breathing, and most importantly (that I've found) is getting a consistent cheek weld. I've put off long range shooting for now, and have been practicing fundamentals using the CMMG .22LR conversion kit for my AR-15, and shooting at short range (25-50 yards) at dynamic targets. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJ_EemWngKZ1opo I've since sold the RDS, as I've found I actually prefer the A2/A3 style rear sight with a Magpul MBUS Pro up front. Some of the targets are just slightly wider than the bullet itself, and they've been a good measure for improvement. As for training with .22LR, I'm doing that because of the economic benefits. $50 will get me 1,100 rounds of .22LR, while $60 gets me 150 rounds of 5.56mm. I have already seen vast improvement in my skills, and as long as I'm zeroed properly, I've been getting tighter and tighter groups when switching over to 5.56 to the point I can now shoot the 8" steel gong at 300 yards about 80% of the time with irons, and the 18" gong at 300 nearly 100% (occasionally there will be a flyer, or I just have a bad shot). Both my brother and I have been practicing, because we want to be able to consistently hit the 8" gong at 450 yards with his .30-06 and 9x scope before elk hunting season. Where we live, it's not uncommon to take elk beyond 350 yards, and we want to ensure a clean kill at those ranges. I'm still a pretty new shooter, and have a lot of improvement to make. I only started shooting (and bought my first gun) at age 34, and now I'm 35. Those of you who've been shooting since you were kids are incredibly lucky, and I have a lot of catching up to do.

@@Gottaculat I have a feeling Peter might be one of those guys that shoots ultra precision .22lrs, we are talking shooting match heads off at 25 and 50yrds and splitting toothpicks in half. Some of those guys have special scopes that go up to 50x so they can see those microscopic targets at 50+ yards. I do agree that iron sight and trigger fundamentals are something that needs practice and is very beneficial. My favorite gun to shoot is my old bolt .22lr it is indecent how precise it is even with bulk ammo (eg. it can hit a 300yrd 1/2 size sillouet gong repeatedly from a kneeling position, albeit with no wind and I usually have to walk the rounds in initially), trigger on it is decent, nothing like the 10oz on the long gun but crisp enough to practice good trigger pulls on. Sounds like you are on the right track to shooting well though, so keep it up!!

The reason we in the military don’t aim for headshots is because, as any experienced shooter knows, you should always aim for center mass to maximize chances of hitting your target. If you aim for the head, it’s a much smaller target and more likely to miss, especially when the target is moving. And if you miss, then you’ve now given away your position and your target can get away.
@ApprenticeGM4 жыл бұрын
Piet's point was that because it was such an easy close-range shot (~75m) and hardly moving, a head shot is much better as it's instant-kill, versus the body shot (Centre of Mass) as the victim could still fire their weapon immediately afterwards. I will leave it to you with your military expertise at sniping, and Piet an expert marksman, to argue the toss of where that line is, but Piet's point is valid.

@@gabe7787 I can't speak for him but I have shot 5.56, 7.62 and .50 cal blanks, and they have much less blowback. You need a gas-stop screwed into the end of the barrel to cause enough force to fully cycle the round, and even those aren't always effective. And the sand also comes into play, it can prevent a normal round from cycling correctly.
@bjlewis54314 жыл бұрын
Correct. Without a Blank Fire device on the muzzle end, very few firearm's actions will cycle at all, and the few that do generate enough impetus to start it to recoil rearward, usually just fail to extract & eject, and thus likely cause a 'stovepipe' stoppage, or possibly a double-feed. If you look into the barrel of most movie guns, especially rifles, you can see that just before the end of the barrel, its blocked up with a small forcing cone, and only a much smaller hole than the rifle's actual barrel caliber is letting out hot gasses, under more pressure. This is part of why movie guns always have such large muzzle flashes, (even when its not CGI). An easy find example is the original Arnie Predator movie, after the scene where they work to lay 'boy scout bullshit' traps for the predator using the jungle, and their crouched waiting & talking, there is a shot where you can clearly see the gas forcing cone inserted in the barrel of his rifle..so it will function reliably with the blanks, and it is usually positioned at just the right place to allow the gas to vent firmly under tighter pressure, right into the flash hider on the end of the barrel, forcefully giving it that created, starshaped flash everyone knows & loves! There are many other movies too, where you can see this device, just down the muzzles of blankfire movie guns.. Because they can't work without it Once you start looking, you'll see them everywhere! Have fun. Dont let it ruin the movies for you watching for it though.. Put simply.. Without this pressure build up in the barrel, as there would be building up behind a bullet, it would just all vent out the end, like a hot gas fart, and there would be virtually ZERO gas impingement or blowback to work a bolt..just like the bolt in the Barrett M107 rifle in Shooter.. Now you know.

223 DMR according to the films technical advisor the .50 appears being pulled back because it kept jamming during filming meaning Mark had to pull it back manually. He also changes to left handed (because marks Left handed naturally, making it easier). He starts the film righty, and is shot early on in the right shoulder so means marks using his dominant side for most of the film. Except that in the hollywood scene the rifles DONT have muzzle brakes while your pro rig DOES have a muzzle break. Whats the difference? About half or less recoil for a given caliber. Might have been not the most direct comparison. but yes they have over done it. Quick search on the internet, some military helicopters DO have bullet resistant cockpit/cabins, going for the pilot may or may not actually kill, but good chance that 50 BMG would penetrate. On the plus side, hitting the windshield would have at least obscured the pilots vision and shaken his confidence.

And, yes, shooting through a vast number of things will cause the bullet trajectory to alter. But I think with 5x the energy of a 7.62x51mm rifle bullet, the wad of hurtling steel/DU or lead will not deflect enough in 4 feet to miss the pilot after passing through his lexan windshield. Watch some Demolition Ranch videos. He shoots down a tree with a .50BMG. As well as other things. That Heli isnt designed to fly fast enough to where a broken cockpit windshield will cause the chopper to fly uncontrollably. An exploded pilot, or rotor hub, will, however.
@T8001234 жыл бұрын
@@tinkerjeeppublications9823 The AH64 Apache can withstand at least 12.7mm (50bmg) to the glass, and the Mi-24 Hind can stop up to the Russians 14.5mm antiaircraft round. So basically all of the relevant modern attack helicopters. Attack helicopter cockpit glass is typically multiple layers of different types of bulletproof glass, and it's multiple inches thick. I can personally attest that the thick-ass bulletproof glass used in the windows of an MRAP can stop the 12.7x108mm that the DShK fires. Demolition Ranch even has a video of him shooting some bulletproof glass that stops (one) .50 bmg hit. Second one wins, though.

In the movie they recover the expended .408 round from the can of food you show him shoot. They then wrap the round in a kind of wax paper wadding that makes it just large to be fired from the .50 Cal. The idea was that the original .408 round would match Lee's barrel and not the M82A1 it was fired from as the paper would protect the round as from the .50 barrel rifling. The wax paper would then incinerate or fall away upon leaving the barrel and while in flight. If you re-watch the movie it's mentioned. They talk about it when they go to the old guy's house who supposedly buried Kennedy's shooters and "still has the shovel". disclaimer: this is how it is explained in the movie. It keeps from getting distracted and it makes it easier. In a lot of cases the sniper ends up convincing himself of the story as a coping mechanism. The man was an incredible soldier and accomplished incredible things. He even overcame PTSD and worked with others to overcome it. It just so happened that one guy got the drop on him and his friend that day and killed them both. Piet, the main thing American Sniper got wrong is that in the way they showed it, Chris Kyle didn’t make the longest shot, the enemy sniper did. Remember that when the enemy sniper shoots the guys off the ladder, he shot from behind Chris Kyle, so his shot was equal to the distance Chris shot sniper from plus the distance the guy in ladder was from Chris Kyle. I know it’s a movie, but enemy sniper should not have been behind Chris or his shot would have been way further than Chris’ shot, in which case enemy sniper should get the record, and not Chris. Enemy sniper did it with a much smaller rifle too. 😁 Good stuff. 👍

I don’t know if anyone else has remarked about it, but I appreciated your demonstrating that even with an exceptionally precise rifle, ammunition, and shooter, beyond certain distances chance (luck) will invariably play a role because of the natural bullet dispersion cone. This is something that is almost never discussed in accounts of long range sniper kills. Louis Pasteur is credited with saying, “Chance favors the prepared mind,” and chance certainly favors the best shot with the best equipment, but when natural bullet dispersion can put the bullet outside the target zone, then chance has the final say. Thank you. I notice some things in these movies, but you obviously have the better, more discerning eye.

One of my big complaints with "Shooter" was, "I changed the firing pin before I left the house. I always do. It looks right but you need a micrometer to tell." I don't know if this was mentioned in the comments or not, but the screen in Shooter where Mark's character was shooting at the help was theoretically correct. The 50 Cal was designed for Special Operations because they wanted a portable weapon system that could "take out" aircraft. If you wanted to "seize" the craft you would shoot through the fuselage stopping a plane from pressuring and able to take off. Later fixing the holes in the fuselage. If you wanted to disable the aircraft you would shoot at the engine/motor the most vital part of any aircraft severally damaging the motor/engine. The scene in Shooter made perfect sense. The helicopter wasn't pressurized so a shot at the helo's engine was bring it down. Even if the pilot was able do a controlled crash, the bird wouldn't be airborne any time soon.

In all of the clips shown for 'American Sniper', the rifle shown is a .338 Lapua, which has a fairly flat trajectory. Barometric pressure (basically, how humidity effects air thickness) has played a significant factor in the world records that were made. A Canadian sniper actually beat the record held by the US for longest shot with a .50 caliber in 2002. Oddly enough, the rifle was American made, match grade ammo (provided by the Americans he was supporting) was used to make the shot, and he was awarded a Bronze Star for supporting the American operation. Amusingly enough, that record was beaten by another Canadian sniper using the same kind of rifle.

A gut shot of untested in sufficient time will be a slow painful death, typical unless is on an appendage most wounds would stop a person in there tracks. @14:37 i showed this video to a friend of mine and he stated that even though these movies are made for entertainment, the reason mark wahlberg goes for the main rotor is because sometimes those helicopters are armoured.

I learned this while playing golf. If you hit the shot you were trying to make, it's not luck, it's just a good shot.

And... 408 cheytac and 50 BMG aren't interchangeable, so the whole the whole "theres no firing pin in the bolt" is redundant in the end 😂

I was so happy to hear someone else complain about squealing tires on gravel. My favourite is when they squeal on grass.

I remember watching a breakdown on Shooter where they pointed out a discrepancy in the opening scene with the .50 cal. In the movie he has to cycle the weapon after every shot, despite the rifle being a semi. The reason was because the production didn't make a modified blank gun or a blank firing adapter before loading the weapon with blanks. There wasn't enough rearward pressure on the bolt to cycle the action with just the blanks. You can even see the blanks being ejected if you watch it slow enough.

If you’re using a Barrett, why would you go for the pilot when you can just shred through the helicopter with the 50BMG

Cause Why not both

In the scene in question, Bob Lee isn't using a Barrett. So, shooting the pilot would be the way to go.

Great breakdown! I learned a lot. Also great movies in spite of those issues. Thank you!

Hi, awesome video. One minor correction, I live in Florida and we have to shoot snakes fairly often on our property. I'd say more often than not, snakes (especially Rattlesnakes, and Cottonmouths) actually do jump up off the ground like that when they're shot. Not due to the force of the bullet hitting them, but due to the snakes fast twitch muscle/nerves going crazy after decapitation. Now, I've never seen one clear the ground like that, but ive seen snakes shot with everything from a .300 to a .25, all the way to 00 buckshot and I've never seen one disintegrate or explode beyond recognition either.
