@KarenLaw-th2pbАй бұрын
I’d agree … there is so much variety he dabbles in everything. Eminem style is just one, he’s influenced by Dead Prez (he preforms the song Hip Hop itself but to his own style (undeniably brilliant rendition), Beastie Boys style, (What you Want, but not a cove), Nas, Sublime style reggae style (like murderer acoustic), sting ‘ish voice, frank Senatra. His original songs have his own humor, either self deprecating or silly arrogance, personal stories, and shock value moments, it’s not for everyone…
@dannytheswedishmusixian1513Ай бұрын
What was I wrong about? Him singing like Bob Marley? Him rapping like Eminem? As someone who has been into hip-hop since the 80's it's pretty easy to hear the influence eminem has had on too many rappers unfortunately.

I also think you might like Chalk Outlines and How to be me, but if you want to see his creativity in full flow, then it has to be the Tale of Jenny and Screech. It is dark, but poignant, and it is a 13 minute theatre performance rather than a song. Well, it feels like that. They filmed it on the streets in the middle of the night. And if you want to surprise yourself from a totally different rap perspective, then check out Humble, or Heretic, or even penitence. Beautiful the lot of them.

He has hundreds of original productions but isn't your average playlist artist. Keep going and you will discover the "Ren' you like in his variety, but he keeps pushing new boundaries all the time. "Hi Ren" is an amazing performance you should check out but it's an art piece as opposed to just a song.

@SpudNickleson-im7isАй бұрын
Although this is a mash up of Fred Again, it's a mash up of a bunch of tracks and the composition is so totally different to the originals that it's basically a brand new song. If you want some 90s style rap from Ren you need to check out "What You Want". He's also got other rap style songs like The Hunger, Losing It or Murderer that are different to the style you checked out previously and more technically interesting. For more singing from Ren, of his own songs, some good options to check out are Chalk Outlines, Diazepam, How To Be Me, Crutch, Patience, Blind Eyed, Fire. There is also the Big Push stuff but once again that is mostly covers and mash ups. He really doesn't stick to any one genre. The songs that have drawn in his most passionate fans though are probably the more lyrical spoken word ones with a cinematic aspect like Hi Ren, Tale of Jenny & Screech, Money Game, or some other songs that hit you like a ton of bricks emotionally like Suicide, Insomnia or For Joe, but those are perhaps not the kind of thing that interest you which is fine. Kujo Beatdown fits in that category but it was a very unique song in a very specific context that really is not an introduction to his general music. I hope you explore more of Ren's work as he's enormously talented and I think you'll find a lot more stuff that you like, but of course you won't like everything and it's refreshing tbh seeing a bit more brutally honest critique from a reactor.

Most people start with Hi Ren , & Sick Boi then there are the tales of Jenny & Screech ( trilogy ) , Money game 1, 2 , 3 another trilogy. Then there are dozens of choices depending on genre . It starts with a very young Ren in a boy group Trick the Fox where they were signed with Sony but due to personal tragedies and being bitten by a tick he was misdiagnosed for a decade , finally its been confirmed as lymes disease which he's having ongoing treatment for. All this and more is on Ren's sites and other Renegades can comment with more details. The point of saying this its the reason Ren has exploded on u'tube & getting more well known is his story is a massive part of his music with all his friends and collabs . If you go down the Ren rabbit hole you will understand he is a generational talent..... Anyway cheers for your reaction and if he's not for you that's fine.......

Ren covers music and reinterprets them because he busks ound Brighton. You can't really play original music and expect a crowd to listen. If you want to hear original music check out "Humble" or anything from his album called "Freckled Angel" along with his demo tapes albums. There are two volumes of demos that are amazing and really well produced. You have about 36 original tracks there. He wrote "Sick Boi" (his rap album) because he wanted to see if he could. The dude breathes music and has become one of my favourite artists in a long time and I've been writing music for over 20 years. His new album is going to be more avant grade which is exciting to hear. He jumps all over the place and doesn't have a lane. He just does what feels right to him. I really don't even consider his "rap" to be traditional "rap" because it's mostly spoken word poetry. Very few "rap" artists are able to accomplish that/

Kujo beatdown is not representative of Ren's rap, although to be fare, every Ren song is somewhat different since he pushes the envelope and plays around with styles, pockets and rhythms a lot. Rap songs to check out older stuff - Genesis, Murderer ( live version is a fav), Blind Eye with Sam Tompkins MC version, Love Music series 1-4 (2 and 3 are pure fun and so good) Heretic, Humble, Hold On, What you want, Money Game 1,2, 3 (all amazing in their own right). Most recent - Sick Boi, Seven Sins, Wicked Ways - this would give you a better taste of Ren's rap. All these are just scratching the surface though.

When Ren puts out a "mashup" or "retake", and I am not familiar with the original artist or songs, I have learned to check out the original first. Mainly out of respect for the original artist, but also out of curiosity as to how Ren's version will differ from the original. Often I do not "get" the original (as with the case of Fred Again), but I always understand, appreciate and love what Ren does with the songs.

Don’t make assumptions, do some more research. Ren can do it all, has been influenced by MANY different artists and genres and is completely self-taught, all while dealing with unimaginable challenges.

I would think Hi Ren would be remembered. It’s that kind of song. Then there is the trilogy of Jenny, Screech and Violet. Money game parts 1-3.

If you like 90's rap try the hunger by Ren he does not have one style of rap he can do it all hands down and his inspiration is 90's rap so I just find it funny that you keep saying that.

Yeah I'm not a superfan of Beastie Boys but the great rap of the nineties.

@@dannytheswedishmusixian1513 like Ren's tribute to Nas? Illmatic was one of the greatest albums to drop in the 90's.

I dug nas but was not a superfan. Great rapper though.

@@dannytheswedishmusixian1513 the difference between Ren and every other artist out there is he finds value in all music he is about lifting people up not knocking them down. Does not matter if you are Nas the Beastie Boys or Em he appreciates all music and artists.
