Huge Paul and Mikey fan!! 1) Paul and Mikey had some of the most successful skateboarding/ post-skate careers because they thought about the future and had goals outside of skateboarding. 2) The industry is difficult because we have a lot of small business owners that are not career business people, they are skateboarders. Sadly, it is up to the industry to train these people to understand retail and business. 3) Core skateboarding has been haters for years, I love core skateboarding but they have never hidden who they are. The core skateboarding purchaser is most of the time, a 16-year old with limited funds that is likely going to quit skateboarding anyway due to life in a few years. And most of these guys are shop-sponsored not even paying for the boards. 4) Paul has a family and a future, love Es, I wore Accels for years. But at the end of the day, again, you have to think about the best for yourself and your family. 5) McDonald's if you want to pay me $10,000.00 next time, happy to help launch your next sandwich. 6) Skateboarders RARELY understand the golden rule, you have pay yourself first and set aside money. Good for Mikey's folks for setting him up right. 7) Paul, you've been talking about the Bentley for 5 years, just buy it man! Tax talk is questionable, do not buy cars because of the"tax write off." 8) Pro's could sell their own boards but the margins are crap, the $25,000.00 gross was years ago, the real money is in soft goods. Plus selling 500 a boards a launch would be hard for 99% of pros. Also, Prod didnt expand, the board business is him and not sellable. Primitive is a brand and is sellable. 9) Getting the money is important (agent/sponsorship, etc), keeping the money is way more important 10) Leverage is incredibly important, but you have to have a brand like Paul has (authenticity) before you can leverage and a lot of these younger guys do not necessarily have the knowledge or the resources to take chances. Looking forward to the show!!

I appreciate P rod being honest and saying he doesn't understand certain parts of the convo. The reality is, his skateboarding even past his active career will probably make him money forever.

You rich kids who got even luckier & were sponsored pros talk like your lot in life is average, it's so blatantly NOT. ...so let me ask you this; how much do you think one needs to be NETTING a year to be able to "invest"? (And mind you, that's after living expenses, which is bonkers nowadays just to be slumming it.)

everybody should have a friend like Mikey. unfortunately i gotta be my own financial guru and figure out how to ball now and later all on my own. it's gone alright, but having a running partner all these years woulda been sick. too bad so sad i had to watch homie after homie go down in flames and end up broke AF. strictly from the numbers of ppl who crash and burn, it's definitely not that easy to make it. that's why videos like this have such few views. ppl just aren't that tuned into the things that REALLY make them money. i appreciate someone like Mikey at least trying to help educate but the harsh reality is most ppl just don't get it, and probably never will. i dunno what i'm trying to say LOL, but anyways this was a fun video to watch.

I feel like Olympic athletes and competition skaters have the best chance to make money. You have to make your sponsors money to make money yourself. Also no one wants to talk about it but there’s a massive stagnation of older pros that are just sucking the teet of sponsors without actually producing anything. Which makes it so new, more promotable skaters can’t go pro. There needs to be some kind of retirement system in skateboarding. Or a level beyond pro, like Legacy, that older pros can go into to make room for newer pros. 🤷‍♂️

I already knew pros aren’t making money. If you’re not in SLS or sponsored by Nike or an energy drink they’re pretty much broke. Literally just look at people like tfunk and others that are heavy in the La and San Fran Skate scene. Prod is one that is considered a rich skater, along with nyjah, and a few others.

Pro skaters aren’t making money? Just because it’s not the 300k Mikey is accustomed too. Skaters like Breana Geering are probably making 60k max. That’s all some are worth.

Pro skateboarders are definitely not making as much as it looks like they are from the outside, that was the point. On top of that, no health insurance or retirement, 60k a year ain’t shit these days honestly.

As a 30 year old skater, I respect this podcast. It’s time our culture swings into a path of mature growth and learning about business. If we truly want to see the youth skate forever we have to help them prepare for their future. Life has a way of forcing you off your board and slaving a 9-5 just to make ends meet. Our goal should be to make as much of not MORE than NFL/NBA athletes because we’re just as athletic and viable in the market. Our issue is the one’s in charge either aren’t skateboarders or they’re skaters with no business mentality. If we come together we can gain traction in accumulating wealth. The same way we teach new kids how to kickflip should be the same way we teach them to save that 5 bucks in their pocket.
