Hey, I rounded all the crisp edges on my S1x. It doesn’t effect the sheath locking mechanisms. The length of that guard is what makes the difference. So just don’t make it much lower if you want the sheath to function like factory. It makes it a comfortable knife to use vs one your constantly thinking about having to fix. I like the nothing to go wrong mentality of the X models. Nothing to break, and easy to clean up when necessary.

Nice video Rob. I have this knife, I just haven't had time to take it out in the bush and use it. I've only used it to build small fires and use it for some light garden work. I do enjoy it, but like you said, the handle isn't for me. Too thin and just doesn't feel right in my hands. I prefer my EnZo Trooper 115 handle. Even though it's Curly Burch and smooth. It just feels right, and with gloves on, it isn't too slippery. Cheers mate.

Thanks for the video Rob. I too love the feel of elmax cutting through wood. I highly recommend buying a Brisa trapper 95 in elmax with a scandi grind and putting your own handle on it. It is one of if not my favorite feather stick makers due to the ease in which it carves through wood and stays sharp. I bought the F1x in elmax only because of how much I loved the R2 Scout. I do wish the handle fit my hand better. With that said I might either buy a F1 pro in elmax or rehandle my F1x in elmax. Some day I would love to buy a tribute knife from you in elmax (or RWL) and see your speedy. Keep making great videos and where were your outtakes for this video. Rusty

Great review as always. You have the best outdoor / knife review videos on KZbin. Do you think you'll ever try a custom American knife? The Paul Lackey HBT might be to your liking. I think you can order it in 3V or AEBL. 80CRV2 is listed on his site, but he uses those other steels in his knives. It would be worth a shot to ask if he can do it.

@@RobEvansWoodsman I understand. I enjoy learning from you and watching you make things with your knives the most. Most other channels don't make things with their tools. Could you do a stropping video? It looks like you drag the edge of your knife on your strop. Looks can be deceiving however, it would be nice of you to explain your method. Obviously, scraping the edge of your knife on a strop will dull it, so I know there must be something else going on with your method.
@RobEvansWoodsman7 ай бұрын
@@gilbertopadilla3611 I don't over strop and I lay the complete bevel on the strop, the problem of rounding the edge and making it blunt over time is due to people stroping too much and not sharpening as often as they should.
@gilbertopadilla36117 ай бұрын
@@RobEvansWoodsman That's true. I strop by using very light pressure and make the angle slightly lower than my sharpening angle. I use diamond emulsions for my strop compound. I find that if I strop too much, I lose my aggressive edge and end up with a duller edge than when I started. I use only 1micron diamond emulsion. Maybe it's my leather? I'll tell you now my friend, the F1x is best for battoning, reasonably good at carving and ok for feather sticks, the bushtool is less good for battoning due to thinner stock, pretty good for carving and great at feathers, the FTP is a little short for battoning, excellent for carving and feathers.

Thankyou as always Rob , I agree with all you said on this knife but I only batoned 3 pieces and noticed a small chip on the blade about half inch from the end of the belly. It was not huge but beyond stropping out and I had to sort it on the ken onion using the medium down to fine belts, I do wonder if I was just unlucky and caught a tough knot or if my blade was a lemon or even if the hrc hardness is a little too much, any thoughts Rob?

the answer is none of these. the answer is factory edges always perform worse than personally done edge’s because of fatigues factory edges. also i hope you either use coolant or only hit the belts a few secs at a time, or else your own edges are gonna be burnt and chippy too.

@RobEvansWoodsman Жыл бұрын
That is an excellent question. Also a very difficult one to answer. I think that if it was the case of either knife as your one tool I'd go with the DBK, but as a person who has many knives and I just wanted something in ELMAX as a general purpose utility knife I'd go with the F1xElmax, it's cheaper , stronger and a more low profile (less bulk) package, I really didn't like the leather DBK sheath. The handle on the DBK is much better for prolonged use than the F1X but prolonged use is usually carving which neither knife excels at anyway, mora got you covered for 20 bucks!

Most of these type blades are too thick for camp use. The bigger bladed ones ( 7” or longer) for survival might need a thick blade. 3/16th” is a good thickness. Also makes possible a long flat sided blade for easier and better sharpening. Cutting wood get an axe.
