Update: Versión en español del video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6mVc3iundWZmqc Some Disclaimers: This video is a generalized perspective about colorism in Latin America, take this into account when watching this video. The reason why I did this is because I wanted to make a more general video as oppose to making a individual video about each country. So keep in mind that there are nuances, because Latin America is not a monolith. 1) No, I am not saying this is the worse problem Latin America faces 2) No, I am not saying that all of LA faces this problem to the same degree, the same way 3) No, I am not saying every latino is colorist nor am I saying latinos are the most colorist/racist/worst people 4) No, this is not some anti-white /anti-european video nor is it a anti-latino video (if you think this is then...IDK what to tell you) 5) No, this is not some black propaganda, [On this channel we do not support any kind of supremacy], Also this is such a weak thing to say to try to dismiss the existence of colorism 6) I know that colorism DOES NOT just affect Latin America, I just wanted to make a video about Latin America specifcally to not make it so broad and it still was too broad. Latin America is a very broad place, it is not a monolith and I did not emphasize this enough in the video 7) the word latin in the dictionaries I looked at included people from Latin America, so I used it. I did not realize how contested this was. I will make a specific video about this, because I think it is a interesting topic to talk about.

Thank you for making the video. I was born in Jalisco Mexico. I can get very white in the winter and can get very dark in the summer. I noticed this colorism mentality. I got lots of compliments as a kid for being white. It’s wrong and I glad there is people talking about it.

This was something super hard I had to learn! My sister is darker than me and growing up she would always tell me how she thought I was treated better and I would brush it off. But now I realized how even family would put me first and just call her la “negrita” and it made me so upset but I also had to apologize because I didn’t realize how I was also contributing to it. This is such an important topic that needs to be talked about!

It’s a shame how white supremacy can break people down to such base ideas that they can’t even hold in the same regard as the people who placed such high esteem on being what they look so highly to! Meaning: These people will NEVER be white, they’ll always be CHASING THE IDEA of it, but never attaining the benefits! They use their hatred of US as a way to make themselves BELIEVE they’re a part of the white supremacist system, when they’re actually just one step away from being just as oppressed as US, they just refuse to admit it!

I’ve noticed that History doesn’t get real until you’re in college, well after I took my first history course in college. I wouldn’t say it’s “real” in college. The problem is k-12 is just building a baseline understanding of history, they don’t go into the weeds. College classes address much more specific instances of history and get into the nuance of certain issues. In my opinion, this is fine, kids in k-12 are not ready to tackle on history in that way (for the most part)

Im hispanic and this has never been an issue in our current state. This is more of an america issue. In third world countries like many in central and sur america and Caribbean we don't have the privilege to indulge in this crap. We have bigger problems to deal with like hunger, tyranny and communism which affects everyone regardless of color in these countries. I come from one of the poorest countries in the world and i had white, black, and mixed neighboors and we never had issues of race rather we all had issues with oppressive governments.

Human beings have been living in tribes for the vast majority of our long history. Is it any wonder that we have developed this frame of mind now that we are able to connect with one another? Unfortunately it isn't something we can simply switch on and off. It is something that has been embedded for hundreds of thousands of years.

Whatever the majority is wherever you are at is simply going to be preferred. It doesn’t make anyone a racist. If you treat someone differently or outright hate them because of the way they look then yes you are racist against that person, race. America is the punching bag against white people as being the most racist. Even though America has more people of more race and background than anywhere else in the world living there. It’s a shame we ignore pretty much every other countries racial problems. Past and present. I can tell you as a white American that money and class warfare is where most of the problems lie. I’m a construction worker, no college and plenty of people look down on me. I’m sure this is true in most other countries also.

Colorism is so prevalent in the Latin community. Just take a look at the soap operas from Mexico. The racial makeup of the actors look like Ricky Martin or Canelo Alvarez. It's even worse in the Caribbean where people are hyper focused about who one dates, assuring the race is not ruined.

Thank you for exposing this. As a Puerto Rican(Afro-Rican), I know about this all too well. They did this in ALL of Latin America. They even got rid of the huge population of Black Argentines, and the little population that exists today they say doesn’t exist. With that “no tenemos racismo” BS. Not only is there Colorism, but there is outright racism too. Look at Telemundo, Univision, and all of those Telanovelas. Most of them look like Spaniards.

Many Latin countries have an amazing mix of racial representation in single families and I honestly think it’s a beautiful thing. That said, whiteness has always been the gold standard and that is still a problem. I remember cousins being advised not to date certain men because they looked “too Indian” Despite the conquistadors many shortcomings, I at least have to give them credit for not being against having families with the natives. As opposed to many colonizers in North America who would never dream of mixing with indigenous people. It was inevitable to have some sort of caste system, for whatever it’s worth having a large percent of your population identify as mixed vs “white vs black” that we see in North America, is not the worst case scenario. I think it’s important to recognize it’s just a human phenomenon across the world. Most people like to date and marry people who look like them. If anything Latin America is the most progressive at blending the races. Brazil and Cuba especially stand out to me. The general trend has been moving away from equating color to being lesser than. It’s important to have these conversations to remind people where we come from and how far we have come. I am Mexican-American and can tell you despite there still being a preference for white/European features, no one in my family is ashamed of the native heritage. In fact many are proud of that fact. It’s a bizarre dynamic for sure though
@SandyNoemi
@SandyNoemi 2 жыл бұрын
I agree with a lot that u said and I am glad that your family members are not ashamed of their indigenounity. I agree that this is a human phenomenon, a problem. Now in terms of racial blending, I do not think that just having mixed families = progress. For example, brazil has showed signs of discrimination, racial injustices, and police brutality although they claim to be a place of one race - Brazilian. One of the points in my video was about how the idea of mestizaje is used as a way to ignore the problems regarding race, colorism, etc. That said, I am not saying this is the worse problem LA faces, nor am I saying every LA country is faced with this problem the same way, same degree, lastly I am not saying that the US or LA is a better version when it comes down to colorism.

Thank you for finally daring to broach this subject at all. Its time to stop sweeping real history under the rug. In early 2001 i had the opportunity to live and go to school in Mexico and learned a few things. Gente de razon (only people who at one time could own land) were the conquistadors / aristocratic colonists born in Spain. Next the Criollos of pure Spanish origin ( now comprise less than 10% of total population) but born in Mexico ( before Mexico's independence from Spain, Criollos could only own land by law if they married an indiginous woman and had children. "Mestizos" or "La Raza" as is they prefer nowadays as the word Mestizo is considered derogatory are of mixed Spanish and Indiginous peoples that comprise the majority of Mexican population present day. Then the native Indiginous peoples, and then the minority being of African ancestry (mostly living in the region of Veracruz) smallest percentage of overall population and the most discriminated against. The Gente de Razon from Spain actually discriminated against their own people simply for being born pure Spanish in Mexico! Today Criollos control all government, the media, corporations and politics keeping everyone else in a perpetual state of serfdom. I miss the Mexico pre-9/11 so much!

Have you ever heard of the brown paper bag thing with the Hispanic community
@SandyNoemi
@SandyNoemi 2 жыл бұрын
No, I haven't, but I think this is a interesting topic to think abt, since there has been ideologies such as mestizaje that have affected how many latinos within their own country identify and precieve themselves. For example, in México their is a strong sense being proud to be brown or something of that sort, but there is still discrimination when it comes to being black or indigenous. I guess there might be some unidentified brown paper bag in the latin community, not sure, but very interesting thing to think abt

In the part of history of Hernán Cortez is right but you didn't mention that he had the help of a indigenous women called Malinche, she merry hated in Mexico because he's considered as a traitor. Without her Hernán Cortez never would have Concord Mexico. But it is understandable why she did it in the first place, because she was treated very badly by her own people and she was basically forced by conquistadors too to do it ( I don't know you already knew in first place)

Thank you for this video! A very few years ago I was ashamed for being yellowish-tan skinned, people would call me offensive surnames like 'Simpson' to mock my skin color 💀 and it was one of my biggest insecurities, that I hid my arms by using sweaters even on summer because I hated my brown arms. Now I really love my tanned skin and I love to take natural sun-baths in the outside (ofc I always use sunblock to prevent skin illnesses) and to embrace my beautiful skin color!

That "better the race" stuff is crazy. Please tell me if I'm wrong, but isn't that basically saying that mixing with and cowering to the people who conquered your lands is somehow making you "better". Note that I'm asking a question, not throwing shade. I really want to know. The best way to foster conversation and block false narratives is to inform people when they ask questions. Most of us Latinos are mixed so we no longer look at it as the people who conquered us or our lands, if you’re lighter better looking nice nose and hair then you are automatically better than a black woman… it’s in this country United States where inclusivity takes a big part. But in South America at least we look at black women or men as a last resort to a relationship. I can speak for most friends I have and they are Latinos… it is a racial thing but without the hate..

There is also an stigma with European latinos or latinos with european roots because now all of the sudden people want to blame us for racism. When colonialism is not even the reason for racism since this one has existed since Greek Egyptian Roman and Asian empires existed. And some Asian countries were NEVER colonized. Colorism exist everywhere

1) this video is not blaming you for colorism. It is blaming the spanish who brought it here :) (If you treat a group like a monolith that is on you) 2) you do realize that white people aren't the only ones with agency hence other races enforced these systems as well 3) your right colonialism is not a reason for why racism exists in general, but I never said that, so like what's your point? 4) "colorism exists everywhere" okay? what's your point? Just because it exists everywhere, nowhere in that statement does that undermine the arguments I made in the video, so I just don't get what you are saying.

Also, remember native people are not a monolith.

Race is a huge taboo here in Latin America. We just don't talk about it, we pretend it doesn't exist. Maybe it's not good, but I think it's still better than being obsessed with race like in the USA
@SandyNoemi
@SandyNoemi 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've come to realize how taboo this concept is in LA... The US and Latin america have different cultures. US is so "obsessed" w/ race b/c of the constant navitistism, segregation, individualism, and race wars. Now in LA it was all about collectivism, mestizaje, while still enforcing exclusivity. I wouldn't say one is better than the other, I don't think u can when no matter which one u choose there is always issues such as colorism, all I will say is that they r different cultures that approach these problems differently, but there r still similarities in for example the reaction to these problems which can be seen w/ ppl acting like the problem of colorism does not exist
@javierperalta7648
@javierperalta7648 2 жыл бұрын
@@SandyNoemi Maybe. But it certainly does not affect me. I could not say the same if I lived in the USA. II have never been there but judging from what I see in the news and what I read in social media, there is a lot of antagonism. Especially between black people and everyone else.
@SandyNoemi
@SandyNoemi 2 жыл бұрын
@@javierperalta7648 That is great that it doesn't affect you. This video is not meant to be like "hey every latino is like this, or latinos are the worst, etc." It literally is just meant to point out a problem that exists, that's it. In terms of the US, all I am gonna say is that the subject of racism, colorism, etc., although it is in the news and social media, there is still a big problem with people wanting to put these problems under the rug, to just ignore them in other words. Also some groups of people in the US are like "this doesn't affect me, so it does not exis"t. Not just white people, but black people, asian people, latinos, etc. What I am trying to say is that the problems are treated similarly even though the culture is different

And yet the universe let it happen. Hmmm? Maybe you should stop looking at color and focus on culture.
@mtd963
@mtd963 2 жыл бұрын
@@SandyNoemi wow a little thick headed aren't we. Ok who is the universe. Well some would say it's another word for God. And lot of Latinos believe in such a deity. Yet where was "god" when they were being taken over by the Europeans? But the error is not in believe that God would or was on their side but not understanding the universes love. Which is total free will. Thus it can't interfere with your choices. Now as for stop looking at color, I wasn't talking within the context of things outside of people. Of course we labeled curtains things to recognize and communicate. And yes it's an observable phenomenon that humans come in different colors. And before we co-minged colors thru exploring and conquering, we had different cultures even within the same color humans. AKA race. And they were and are still hating each other for various reasons. Political or religious to name a few. So until they can come to peace with each other don't expect them to come to peace with people of different color than themselves. Which leads to culture. So he is a topic you should explore to better understand what I mean about focus on culture. Research why Africans don't like African Americans. Same color/race yet a hate or dislike for one another. Why? Hint hint CULTURE. And in 2021 you can be racially this but culturally that. For example, when a white dude acts culturally blk American he is called a wig ger. And notice how I said blk American. Even though I could have said blk. Why? Because some would see the word blk and lump Africans into the mix. But Africans actually use just the word blk/s to describe blk Americans. You'll see when you research here on ut because that's how some of them will title their videos. Ok young one. Hopefully you snap out of your victim mentality. Listen to conversations with God books to help you. Don't let the tile fool you. Just listen first then come to a conclusion. ✌

What exactly is uncomfortable about talking about racism? I would highly reccomend you try living like and behaving as if your not being oppressed for like a month and see what happens.. ive lived 27 years ive only ever met racist people of colour. Alot of gangs are racially motivated. I genuinelly reccomend looking at today rather than yesterday the catholic church spent its entire existence up until the modern age systemattically destroying all pagan / heretical cultures and religions it encountered.. except white religions.. except every individual non catholic religion.. you need to stop telling yourself the world hates you. There is not a single group of persons in the history of man kind that has not faced oppression at the hands of another group of people nor is there a single group of people that has not engaged in oppressive behavior.
