I'm a white Muslim girl coming from a Muslim majority country in Europe. I once commented somewhere on the internet that there are also white Muslims and that we get easily ignored and someone replied with "Oh, yeah, white people can convert to Islam". I didn't convert, I was born into it (Alhamdulillah) as were me parents, their parents and so on. It really annoys me as does the portrayal of Muslims in western media. Edit: I'm from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Yeah, unfortunately western classifications of race and skin color is now considered as worlwide but it's def not. There are a lot of people that we can't just call brown or white or yellow in many regions. For example, I'm a Kurd from Turkey, my ancestors were living in Eastern Anatolian peninsula so we kinda look like Turks more than Syrian or Iraqi Kurds. So what am I? Racially, they would call me brown but my skin is quiet white lol. Basically, Western race standarts are not real but constructed for their superiority obsession.

It clearly does because princess Jasmine said ,,Allah" in the movie. But Jasmine herself was a bad representation of a muslim girl. Her entire design was clearly based on american girls but only in brown colour. She is also wearing an outfit which prostitutes wore it back then..

@@konanxhidan3202 that’s not a solid argument. Aladdin is set in the generic Middle East. I won’t say everyone but A lot of people refer to the higher power in the language of the land. If you read old biblical text in Arabic you there’s a high probability that you will see the higher power referred to by “Yahweh” “Allah” or whatever language it is written in. I’m not necessarily saying you are wrong I’m just pointing out an alternate possibility that has been seen before.

The best representation of a muslim I have seen is “Iman” in Skam France, the character is a black, muslim, hijabi teenager living in France, has non muslim friends and falls in love with a non muslim guy, but she doesn’t hide her beliefs, doesn’t take off her hijab and is so respectful with others, so everyone respects her.

The girl then says that she can't ever imagine a relationship with him because even if he was born Muslim he doesn't believe in Allah, which is exactly the whole point of being a Muslim.

Jesus Christ was not “created”, He actually created Mary because He's God. The same way the Holy Spirit was involved in the act of creation as He moved upon the face of waters (Genesis 1:2). He was involved in preparing the body in which Christ would have while on earth. Aladdin failed to represent brown culture, Arab culture and Muslim culture and the reason is that they tried to represent ALL of those as if they were one and then also based the characters stereotypically. Have you ever noticed Jasmine is the least modestly dresses Disney princess? She literally dresses like a belly dancer when she's supposed to be the most prestigious woman.. The daughter of the Sultan.

@Focused Studying 1001 Nights itself isn’t a one author book and the origins are pretty unknown. The song in the movie says Arabian nights then the movie proceeds to showcase a princess in belly dancing clothes, a monkey and a tiger, and various different aspects gathered from varied Middle Eastern cultures as if they’re one. This is a modern example of orientalism and failed representation. Disney gave us many white culture movies and couldn’t make one correct brown culture movie? I don’t blame them neither, the west constantly fails to understand/represent brown cultures because they often think of them as one.

because it is all part of an agenda (I'm not a conspiracy theorist) you see it everywhere in the movies, video games etc. They want people to fear and despise religion and think of it as nothing but something that restricts a human being from freedom of expression etc, forbids you from desires, lgbtq and actually many religions do not accept this, which is logical, this is also why athiesm is increasing in some countries, people aren't given proper knowledge of religion and some if not most religions infact have been changed and spread in such a way that it confuses people and leads them into hating religion altogether, this is what scholars and mullahs are doing in Muslim countries which is also why the reputation of Muslims suffers to this day, it is similar to how priests corrupted and changed the Bible, which makes some Christians leave religion.

not only that even our favourite video games from early 2000's dehumanize Muslims, the call of duty series are notorious for this, metal slug, resident evil 4, two of the games have Japanese creators too, although I did see some positive representaion lately, they brought an Arab character named Shaheen in Tekken 7, even street fighter 5 has an Arab fighter, both are portrayed as good guys. but that is not enough.

There's a horror show called "Slasher." And believe it or not, its main character - or the final girl - is a hijabi teenager girl. Despite the unlikely circumstances, I'm glad that the show portrayed the girl in more positive ways than simply reduced her into just stereotypes. Or at least different than how the western media usually depicted a hijabi woman.

Just want to share a story. My friend has a cousin, we are all muslims. One day her cousin had some fights with her parents and o make it short, to the point she wanted to run away with her boyfriend and wanted to convert to be a christian just like her boyfriend. And off course, her parents opposed her. And what was her parents, or more like her mom's respond? "You will bring a disgrace to OUR FAMILY! Do you forget that your grandfather is a *Kiai?! Where should i put my face in front of the big family and our neighbors?!" fyi : Kiai is a title or reference for a venerated scholar, teacher of Islam. Probably an equivalent of a Pastor in christianity? What disappointed me from her parent's respond is that they were worried for themselves, not for their faith, not because her daughter had forgotten our God, our belief. They were worried it will disgrace the image of their family in front of people. This to me just makes them look like wanting their daughter to stay as muslim not because of Allah, but just to safe their image. To me this is what the oppression is. The people are that oppressing, not the God. And honestly many parents are like this. When they educate their children about "religion" they never approach it in spiritual way but rather being aggressive. My mom were like that too, when i was a little kid she forced me to wear hijab just because i was a muslim and that's the rule. And if i refused, she would get mad at me. But luckily now, thankfully we grew a bit more mature. Now when it comes to religion, she does it in really a spiritual way, really thinking about our faith and God. I think one of the big problem about muslim representation is whenever they wanna talk about Islam, they talk about it through a christian prism. Let me explain: I noticed it in Elite especially cause it's the only show I watched that had a hijabi girl in it. They took all of the "problems" they have with christianity (women being denied autonomy, homophobia etc etc), they brownwashed and TADA! It's Isam. They didn't talk about stuff that are important to muslims; while it's true that parental even familial pressure is huge when you're muslim but family, parents especially can be such a great source of comfort and support. Also, they didn't address about the subject of immigration and how our family encourage us to adapt a perfect behavior so we don't tarnish our community image. My mom always told me "people may look down on you because you're a woman or muslim but through hard work you will force them to respect you" and I think it's unfair that I'm juged just on apperances. They didn't talk about Hijabi women being harassed for wearing a cloth because it's a sign of oppression (even when when they chose to wear it) or muslim men harrassed for wearing the bread cause they look like a terrorist. I have a friend who was denied entry to USA despite being supported by an university just because his name was Jihad even though he has no criminal record whatsoever. I can go on and on but long story short: muslim/arab characters (even though both are not mutually inclusive) don't reflect muslims/arabs issues because they weren't written by people who are part of those communities.

What is this comment even supposed to mean?? Christianity has barely influence on the society in Spain. People are much more open minded and less religious. Muslim people have a background from obviously Muslim countries and Muslim families. The people in Muslim countries are much more strict and much more religious. No it's not just a movie. People there be really basing their whole view about us on the movies they watch. They become major ignorants and don't even make the effort to learn. @@MMAACC2014 as far as the extent of my knowledge goes, there is no reason to keep girls from wearing hijab at a young age, maybe it's their own preference since this is when the parents themselves wore it, but there is a specific time where girls will eventually have to wear hijab (that time is around their early teen years for most, but some have it different) but to sum things up, there is no specific rule that girls can't wear hijab at a young age, but it becomes a must at some point in their lives

I'm a Christian girl (not that religious), and in my former school, there is a rule that states the only religion allowed is Christianity. And the hijabis in my school were forced to remove their hijabs and stay like that for an entire term, mark you it's a boarding school(a term is 3 months ling). I remember some of them crying and saying it was disrespectful, but the school did not listen. Even during Ramadan, they were not allowed to do the Islamic way. The school also had a rule that church was compulsory, every Friday evening, Sunday morning and Sunday evening. It was a burden, even to me. If you don't attend you were eligible for suspension. The Muslims were not allowed to go and pray on any day. I really felt bad for the hijabis and the Muslims, and some of us tried to change the rule, but it was all in vain cause we ended up getting suspended. The school does all these for "uniformity" since we wear uniforms.

Also, Muslim parents should have full right to be upset when their children go clubbing, carelessly consuming intoxicants(ie. alcohol and pot), if they commit zina, or if they purposely choose to sexualize themselves for the attention of others. For those debating Aladdin, the point is that Aladdin perpetuates Orientalist tropes - that the Middle East is barbaric, far-away and uncivilised. This is not exclusive to Islam but Asia as a whole. Many associate Islam with these tropes and generalise all Muslims as Arab, or from the Middle East. This is an important trope, because it is still perpetuated today (in shows such as Homeland where a white saviour journeys through the barbaric Middle East, Aladdin, The Dictator etc.) The media uses Orientalism to depict the Middle East as a deserted, uncivilised land, filled with women who are oppressed and in need of being liberated, and men who are inhumane, barbaric and devoid of human emotion. This is often perpetuated onto Islam as well. This trope can be extended to the Balkans and other parts of Asia. For those interested in learning more, it is a term coined by Edward Said (a Palestinian) in his book called Orientalism, 1978.

Most of the time, it's because of coercion. However, there are some cases where children are not be explicitly "forced". Children are very impressionable. These tropes are so accurate. The last time, I saw real Muslim representation was when I was a little kid around 2008 in the movie "The Lion of the Desert " and the movie series, "The Message". It has some inaccuracies but still mostly correct...the quality is a bit bad though because we watched it from CDs. I am Christians but majority of my life was spent with Muslims. They were kind and accepting. My neighbours are Muslims but they have never just the way I dressed or what I do. It saddens me to see the way they portray Muslims on screen. All my life, I have been told to emulate the Muslims way of modesty, it was never as a form of oppression. The Muslims around me are very happy and never one day seemed oppressed. My god daughters (6&8) were given the right to choose their religion. It is so annoying to see such rubbish on the media.

That's so interesting. As a non-muslim, I've never thought of Aladdin as a movie about Muslims, maybe because the characters behave and dress so differently from how I expected Muslims to behave (sorry if that's a stereotype). For example, Jasmine wearing what's basically a bikini top with pants, and no hijabs or niqabs in the movie at all (that I remember of, that is). I always thought of it as being set in pre-Islamic Arabia, or maybe Persia before the Islamic conquest.

It indeed is meant to portray Arabs in a rather stereotypical way, mind you it's a movie from the 90's, which makes it even more apparent that stereotypes against Arabs and Muslims were infact a thing in the 90's in the U.S and Europe.

03:31 I know nothing about this storyline. But based on what you described, this character is actually pretty common in real world. There are many girls who don't wanna wear hijab, wear it because their parents want/expect them to. It's not just a misrepresentation. You can say it's a traditional thing, not religious related, I don't know. Either way, It does exist. As for the other tropes mentioned, I think they are accurate.

May I ask if you know Samirah Al-Abbas? If you do, do u think she's a good representation? Samirah is a teenager (16 yo) Muslim character in one of Rick Riordan's books (Magnus Chase and the gods of Asgard, it's about Norse mythology). Throughout the whole series, she always emphasizes how important her religion is for her, (it's even said that she thinks of the Norse gods more like powerful beings rather than actual gods); as far as I can remember, she only takes her hijab off when she's around people she considers her family; and the last book takes place in the Ramadan, so it's described how, while she's on a mission to save the worlds, she takes her time to do her prayers and mentions how important and meaningful is for her to do so. She's is definitely a great and very interesting character but, since I'm not Muslim, I always wondered if she was portrayed correctly :) (Sorry if I made any grammatical error)

Ig yeah, I mean when I read the book she just seemed like a forgettable character to me and everything involving her was just so forced into the story. Everything that was brought up about her always seemed to had to do with Islam. Like, when you’re writing about a universe where other factors like elves and dwarves are involved, I highly doubt another religion will be important to discuss.

0:00-0:07 YESSSSSSSS me and my sisters always say things like "Oh my god that girl is wearing a hijab!" every time we're watching a movie/show that, you know, has a girl in it that wears a hijab. Even if it's a random side character that is just walking by or something. I really hope that we get a good movie some day that includes Islam from someone that is actually Muslim.

If you’re talking about Imane from France SKAM season 4, then yes. Of course you can’t ever come up with a character that perfectly represents everything about a certain group of people, you can be avoid being islamophobic and saturating the show with other harmful, problematic stereotypes and that’s exactly what SKAM France did. Watching Imane felt so great to see muslim character being strong and themselves and never taking off their hijab for some man. Imane loved her religion and she also loved her friends ans Sofianne. Honestly, there’s hardly any decent muslim representation so I can’t say that SKAM France season 4 is the best muslim representation because it’s the only non terrible muslim representation I’ve watched. Hopefully things change though. My days, I loveeeeed Imane!
