Very well said. The image of goa is that of an idyllic paradise. Which it may well be for some, but for the rest,it's a horrifying experience. Food...until some years back, good quality local food was easily available in most places. Now it's a mishmash of supposedly exotic cuisines, badly prepared and very expensive too. Services were at a premium even earlier, but now the situation has gone from bad to worse. Transport facilities were bad. Now with the influx of outsiders it's even more so. The less said about public utilities, the better. Medical facilities are appalling to say the least. Education also is not on par with other states. Despite their laid back attitude, locals are overtly aware of their heritage and culture, which essentially is not at all different from the rest of the nation. Because with all the foreign influences, the core is still distinctly Indian. Jobs cannot open up unless local trade, commerce and industry expand exponentially. Which is nowhere in sight. Corruption apart, there is a strong undercurrent of caste and religious bias. The uniformity of cosmopolitan culture is sadly lacking. The core strength of goan progress is solely tourists and tourism. If these factors are overlooked,I see no future for goans to make their mark on the tourist map. Goans are grousing against outsiders overrunning their space. But I seriously wonder if that applies to the Russian and other foreign citizens settling down permanently, even illegally.

You said is right.Goan only like foreigners.because money involved in that , foreign currency.imported materials.Sometime it is easy to manipulate them.who don't bother much spending in indian currency.if they stay there illegally ,and do illegal business that is ok with them.Even Rohingya settled their they will ok with it.They just hate indian.Bitter but true.As per few resort owner Indians are more demanding.foreigners are not much demanding.Even few beaches are known by their names.that domination Goan loves.they are ok with that.

Want to settle in Goa for the vibe. But want Goa to provide city facilities. You want. Laid back lifestyle, means things will take time and you gotta be handy yourself. Plus Shanti chahiye toh don’t ask for fast paced city facilities. Goan people enjoy simple living. City dwellers who can’t do that, stop cribbing and stay in your city.

I am not Goan. I am Mumbaikar. I visit regularly Goa for tour and religious festivals. Our Ganpati temple is at Goa. I have experienced all this. Still I love Goa. Because this not only problem with Goa. When you go to any city or village you will find same problem. This we fill because we are bugs of fast life of urban cities. You rush whole day and at the end of the day you sleep with next day local travel and other tensions. And ultimately no satisfaction. I like how Goan people describes their life "Sushegat"

Nice, candid way of putting across your views with a lot of clarity of thought. 👍👍 Goa is much more than just beaches, good food and cheap liquor - - - and those who think of shifting with only these things in mind will get a rude shock. Having visited Goa more than 20 times, all I can say is that first and foremost, mix with the locals, learn Konkani, know their culture and assimilate them. Be a part of them and their culture & traditions. I have many Goan friends and they are genuinely good people and do not "hate" all "outsiders" - - - Yes if anyone just flaunts money, refuses to imbibe their culture and hurts the self respect of Goans, they will obviously be hated.

I would like to remind those who visit or choose to live in Goa to respect our environment. We have enough Goans who abuse their own environment to the shame of other decent Goans and need to be stopped. So, all outsiders should respect our laws and stop spitting pan saliva on public walls, drains, and on the ground. Stop littering wherever you go. Honour the laws pertaining to the proper disposal of garbage from home and picnic spots. Dispose sewage from the blocks of flats and houses that you reside in accordance with the law. Do not throw empty and often broken bottles on our clean beaches. Control your crutch and false manhood when you see a gal in a western dress. She is not available as you might imagine in your primitive mind. It is just that she has a different idea and freedom to choose about dressing. And next time you see a woman in a sari, note how they display their midriff and cleft and even more when they enter the sea in thin sarees. So keep your false impressions to yourself. Furthermore, change your condescending attitudes towards Goans. You have not conquered Goa. Since the Portuguese era, Goan Hindus, Muslims and Christians, and other minorities have lived in relative harmony and peace and we want to keep it that way. Goans are culturally unique and deserve to be respected. So leave your divisive mentality at home.

Your rant is unconnected to what I wrote which was a factual statement of my observations of most women in sarees. It was not a value judgment on the saree as a dress. A typical Indian illogicality Pan Wide. In fact, I consider the saree to be a beautiful dress that can serve a dual purpose of modesty and sexuality depending on the inclination of the wearer. A kind of killing two birds with the same stone depending on intentions. .

Seems like a pretty comprehensive review of the issues that Goans have with the Indians that wave in and out of Goa in destructive and disrespectful mode and with those Indians who stay. It would be good if you also told your comments in English to reach those who do not know enough Hindi. My feeling is that too many Indians think that they have conquered Goa and can therefore behave as they please, too often, as they do in their own state. It's left to us Goans to assert our values and our rights. My comments, previous to this podcast are given below and they are still relevant. You will note that I admit that Goans are not all that perfect and are directly or indirectly to blame for lots of our problems. In fact, there are many who can argue that under the surface, Goans are not as 'tolerant' and 'welcoming' as they are made out to be. There are many factors that divide Goans. One outcome of this antagonism among Goans is the incapacity of Goans to use the freedom of 'self-government' bestowed upon them, which never existed under Portuguese colonialism, to bring about exemplary democracy in Goa for the rest of India to emulate. Many Goans disrespect their very own sons and daughters of the soil who return to live in Goa after spates abroad in search of livelihoods, even to the point of calling them, "outsiders", which is even more insulting when it is dished out by those Goans who are parasites in their own communities and in Goa. Such fools conveniently ignore the fact that the Goan diaspora transfers millions of foreign currency to Goa and India, and that those who return invest huge sums in Goa!! In contrast, too many of those who profess to be Goan remain parasites of Goan society and collude with the criminals from elsewhere that are ruining Goa and Goans. One factor that nobody seems to talk about is the carrying capacity of Goa for good quality human habitation. Just yesterday,, I heard an interview of Architect Dean D'Cruz by Frederick Noronha in which Dean estimated that Goa could accommodate about three million people and simultaneously retain its natural beauty and protect its critical natural capital. Technically that might be true but I shudder at the thought that we currently have the political, socio-economic capability, maturity, and inclination to develop to that level of 'Nirvana' instead of following the primitive path of ongoing environmental destruction with impunity, and hounding Goans away from their homeland by favouring employment to non-Goans over even better qualified Goans and through bribery and corruption. Something that never happens against locals in other states in India. Whether this is a deliberate process of destroying the very unique fabric of Goan society and identity is a separate subject for debate and rectification. Our first step is to wake up from our pipe dreams, face the reality of our existence, for instance, our double standards when it comes to environmental protection, and start by relieving the suffering of Goans and settlers from the unreliable water supply and sewage and pollution, third class electricity supply, primitive telephone and Internet communications, insulting public transport in contrast to worship of reckless vehicle drivers, neglect of environmental cleanliness and management, poor enforcement of the rule of law and justice for all, high cost of prosecution, sub-standard judiciary, need I go on? Shall we say, in a nutshell, CORRUPTION? But please tell me if I have omitted something important. As Dean said, the development of infrastructure must precede an increase in population. Let us not put the cart before the horse by neglecting infrastructure development and increasing the influx of non-Goans because that will lead to social animosities, the destruction of Goa, and the loss of Goan identity. To that, I would add that we must have a limit on the space available to accommodate people. Goa is a small area without an infinite capacity to accommodate people. No, we do not want to be another disorganized and corrupt state in India. Our aim is to be a model state in India and we deserve to be helped to be so.

One should know what to expect in Goa which is mostly comprised of villages. U cannot expect metro life here. I don't see offence in this video but some comments are. Also, this outsider tag has started for a reason. Goann's aren't rascist by choice. Goans do welcome and respect those who respect and accept Goa. Not those who come to cheat, pollute, concretize, communalize, corrupt, rape our beautiful Goa. Yes corruption is high but thats everywhere. Other states there's so much more violence. So don't compare Goa to other states. Goa is the best and goans know to live in peace and harmony compared to other states. Its the politics thats ruining Goa. It will be difficult for non Goans or outsiders as you call them to understand the mindset of Goans. We have our drwbacks. Why we have prospered all over the world is a great wonder. Anyway the point is that many of the things you have said and or mentioned are absolutely true. Goans need a push and I for one is toying with the idea of establishing a sizeable fund to uplift the poor Goan families so that they can enter simple everyday commercial activities. Thank you once again. I appeal to my Goan brothers and sisters to reform ourselves rather than take a negative view of life. Goa and Goans will suceed whatever the present difficulties maybe. Good luck socegad Goemkara!

Goa and Kerala are a bit similar. Goans in Goa are laid back, but work hard when they are outside of Goa. In Kerala people are hard working, but you can't get things done because of communist set-up of the working culture. But Keralites do work hard once they are outside that toxic work culture. One of the biggest difference between Kerala and Goa is that Keralites are welcoming in their attitude towards outsiders, unlike Goans. The Keralites approach and outsider with self confidence, which the Goans lack. Goans try to exhibit false superiority to mask their inferiority complex.

The essence is this, in life everything has its pros and cons. If you look at the currency note its got heads and tails, similarly this applies to everything in life. You cant have a peaceful relaxed life in a metro. Dont expect metro in a calm and natural beautiful habitat. In that case you are best suited to metro life and you will be a misfit here. I live on a small town in Karnataka two hours from Goa.

But if you wanna be free of all this you need to know how to deal with every situation no matter which state or country an individual maybe living or is planning on living

Hey Friend, you are looking at the place through the eyes of a city slicker. You should have thought about this before you moved. Corruption is something that is at all over the country. I'm from Kerala, but live deep in the Himalayas. Do you think I left my house in Delhi thinking I'll find Ola cabs, Zomato and Escorts up there. I'm over 60, I walk 1 kilometer over a 60 degree gradient to get to my car. I'm not cribbing.I face landslides and storms round the year. In the last three years I have lost two dogs and a pup to the local Leopard. I'm not cribbing. I walk 4 kilometers to get supplies, 18 if I need specific items or need to replenish my bar. I still dont crib. My wife are thinking of moving to Goa. Your post has not made me change my mind. It's mainly north Indians who are the catalyst for the outsider tag. Wherever you go , you try to make it a mini Punjab or a mini North India. You are in another geography, another culture, blend in chief; why do you want to stick out like a sore thumb. This creates trouble and the outsider tag to others who don't have this trait or tendencies. Think it over.

Some Goans are humble and polite and friendly. Without a sociological study, one can only guess the proportions of the GOOD, the BAD, and the UGLY. My feeling is that most Goans are exploitative towards newcomers to Goa and nowadays towards old timers also. I have socialized with countless types of people in numerous countries all around the world and I can tell you for sure, Goans are not at the top of the pyramid when it comes to high-quality attributes. Of you might have a different opinion.

Well, chum, I would partly agree and disagree with some of your points. While much of what you have enunciated is true, there is something called 'adaptation and assimilation' that would apply to folks intending to settle partly or permanently in Goa. You need to earn respect from the locals, (not buy it with money, like SOME people from Gurgaon and Delhi try to do.) Rule # 1: Learn Konkani (with its accents, of course) and converse with the Goenkars. Rule # 2: Practice their Terms of Endearment, learn their customs and culture and respect them. Try to endear with them and not engage with them. Rule # 3: Get yourself a whole set of power-tools for electrical, plumbing, carpentry work, etc. and learn these skills from videos online - you would have plenty of time for that. Rule # 4: Avoid discussing sensitive topics like Religion and Politics, and learn to reserve your views and comments in public. And lastly, Rule #5; Never flaunt your wealth or impose yourself - don't be pushy with them. Goans, by nature, are a friendly lot - they have helped me and my family on several occasions, often without charging for certain services, and I have helped them as well. It's symbiosis and harmony always. Sogle borem, I would prefer to say. In the 25 years I have lived in Goa, never once have i heard them uttering to me "Tu bhoile, mrre ?" (You're an outsider, aren't you), and not once have I paid bribes to get my work done, even in government offices or at the panchayat or the police station. (By the way, this Insider / Outsider or Bhitorle-Bhoile thing exists everywhere - from the North-Eastern states of India and its rural areas, to Germany, South Africa, Australia and the US. ) A word of advice - offer tips generously to the taxi driver, pilot and waiter - though they never opened out their palms, Sshee, naka, naka, - asun !, whenever I offer them. As for electricity, water supply and the rains in Goa - you learn to live with it, or without it. Patience and endurance. Learn farming - get your hands dirty in the tambdi mati. Today, I am a silver-haired senior, and they address me as 'bab' whether at the tinto or the secretariat. That is quintessentially Goa for me - Sobit amchem Goem, Sundor amchem Goem !, or Viva Goa ! whichever. Yes, you can settle down in Goa provided you do not live in a gated complex like celebrities - learn to live with them, work with them like ordinary humble Goenkars.

Goa is known world over for its locals, who love peace and harmony. They are famous for their hospitality & welcoming nature. Then about the "outsider tag", yes goans were forced to be cautious, with so many bitter expirences they got from the visitors or many new entrants coming here to settle, peculiarly from the metros. Most of the times they want to continue the same lifestyle, at same pace and with self centered or selfish approach, that too with a cut throat competition in everything. This is how they have lived their entire life. Its the circumstances they lived in, shaped their way of life. But it would be so nice, if they could respect the local culture. First blend with the goan lifestyle, instead of trying to change the way the goans lived till now. Secondly, I happened to travel extensively accross India & abroad for professional reasons, but found that Goa has one of the best medical facilities around. Even the 108 facility is freely available, just on a call. May not be highly effective but is free and easily accessible to everyone. Even in the Metros, you can avail all these facilities, if you are ready to spend. If you see, people from all neighbouring states prefer to come to Goa for free medical treatment. Now regarding transport facilities, initially it was not well developed, due to much less population density & most locals here preffered to have their own 2 wheeler or car. Per capita income too was one of the highest in the country. Regarding the taxi service, yes the union is taking disadvantage of the situation & need to be brought in line. Anyways, Goa also has the unique motorcycle taxi (pilot) facility, one of the important & trusted service available in Goa. Anyways, there is lot of scope for improvement in public transport. I remember one peculiar incident, even my non goan friends always mentioned. They noted, when two vehicles met at a crossing in Goa, both would stop & give way to the other. Such behaviour could never be seen anywhere else. Nowadays its observed that people may start fights at junctions in a race to cross first & most of the times these are non goan tourists or new settlers. We find it worrying for our next generations, "Is Goa loosing its unique identity in this race? Still, Goa is far far better then any other place in India in terms of infrastructure facilities & its people. Let us further improve it, but without loosing its unique identity. All are welcome here, but should be respecting the goan culture & maintaining it. First mentally be a "GoenKar"

Not everything said in this video is true and secondly how can one compare such a beautiful place to an urban area when you actually come here to be away from the everyday hassles of cities. I don't intend to give the maker of the video an outsider tag but since it's been only 2 months for you, you cannot be judging the availability of services here. Rather than having a huge company providing services, locals have there own small businesses who provide these services so all I can say is that you need to get more information of such people from the people around you.

Same with small electrical or routine things that u wanna get done at home. Everything will be 2x orginal price, N normally food is so expensive, if u don't hv time to cook, a three time meal would cost 500+ per person per day. Still i love Goa,and its a amazing place😊. Even Kerala was badly hit by cyclone in 2020.. Back to Mumbai, only God knows everyday how many crimes occur ?? When I travel to Mumbai the first thing I do is I remove my wallet and keep it in the bag😁 and then board the bus or local train. Goa is a safe place. Goa is small having less population, therefore less job opportunities. We do have hospitals & emergency services, and if you need experts medical attention there are Doctors coming from Mumbai or travel to Mumbai or other place for cosultation😀

sir, i hope you won't mind if i correct you . the names of places on sign boards are written in portuguese where usually the ending "m" is silent so its pronounced as panaji for panaji and shivoli for siolim . due to the high cost for converting the names in english the govt has not changed it . And we locals prefer it more if the places are called by local names the way marathis prefer mumbai over bombay.
