From another photographer I follow, this tip: Keep batteries in your camera bodies. Sometimes security wants to check if the camera works as it is supposed to be. Probably to make sure that it isn't a bomb with a diguise or so.

I have my overhead carry-on backpack,, and my under the seat carry-on. Both are tightly packed with everything expensive. They are within the size restrictions but they are heavy as hell. But just as you, I never let on that they are heavy. (They will let you carry-on heavy bags, as long as you can lift them and deal with them yourself.) I often pay extra to board early so I have space to place these bags where they need to go. Or I notify boarding staff that I am a photographer and I’m carrying expensive equipment and they will put me on the flight early. I have insurance but I don’t trust insurance companies to truly look after my loss if stolen or broken. I am my own best insurance policy! If I’m taking a small jump flight and they stop us on the ramp and say “there is no room on-board and your bags must go below”, I never ever ever release my bags. I will take a different flight before that happens. I explain that there is $20,000 in photography gear in these bags and they are not leaving my side. They have always let me find a place for them. But it’s nerve wreaking! I can’t imagine letting go of a bag and watch it go down a ramp and be thrown into the luggage bay below. Not a chance!

I've had the same problem. I took a trip to New Zealand and the airline wanted me to check in my backpack. It looks like you have a F-Stop Tilopa bag, which I also own. Pierre - I traveled the the world before retiring (consulting on "dangerous goods" safety legislation) carrying various electronics, but now I only carry my camera gear and computer so here are some points to note. Not all airports have the latest x-ray / scanning technology so you may get more inspection / scrutiny at some airports (not necessarily limited to small airports or small, foreign countries). Small aircraft are more sensitive to overweight luggage (and overweight passengers - not you) - it's not uncommon on a partially full commuter flight (30 to 40 seats) for the flight attendant to re-arrange passenger seating to properly balance the aircraft - there has been at least one crash on take-off when this was not done. I always take advantage of the two carry-on bag limit (one backpack and one sturdier polycarbonate case with wheels & above average locks) and I sort my gear between what could be put on the skycheck for small aircraft or checked at the gate if they insist the flight is full and what goes in my backpack (lenses, camera, SD cards and backup drives, computer, batteries, etc.) that stays with me "until death do us part." It is critical (and international law subject to severe fines) that all batteries, especially the lithium-ion batteries are packed so there is absolutely zero chance of metal (e.g. the metal skin on another battery) or moisture causing the battery terminals to short circuit (original packaging preferred) - otherwise you may be going down in flames. The batteries must be in carry-on - many airlines carry special, extreme-heat, thermal bags in the cabin where they can put a flaming or overheated electronic device to contain the fire (it is near impossible to extinguish lithium-ion battery fires) - there is nothing they can do for such a severe-heat fire in the cargo hold. Of course at my destination then everything moves to the backpack when I go out to take pictures. Your 39 lb backpack is going to wreck your back all too soon, but I also struggle with what to bring and what to leave at home (partly because my back is already wrecked). Safe travels - I enjoy your videos and photos.

I traveled before with gears in backpack. All of the things that Pierre mentioned was true, especially with your valuable items, always carry it with you or in your carry-on luggage. What I've done was I put all my gears in the carry-on luggage and have my camera with a lens on separate small camera bag. Most airlines allow us to carry a small bag that is not considered as a carry-on. Sometimes I want to take pictures inside the airport, that is why I separate my camera from the carry-on luggage for a quick access. That was my first tip and last tip. Get a roller camera bag not a backpack. Your shoulders will thank you. Happened to me the first time I used backpack with my gears, just image all those weights on your shoulders. Hopefully this will help. Happy travelings....

I live in the U.S. and in my experience on flights between the U.S. and Europe, non-U.S. carriers weigh your carry-on bags. Some of those airlines cut you some slack while others don't. I'm traveling to Italy for two weeks next month and the carrier has a 10 kilo (22 lb) weight limit for all carry on bags combined. I plan on filling my pockets with as much heavy stuff as possible and have even bought a special vest with loads of pockets for that purpose, but it may not be enough to get my 2 carry-on bags (camera bag and backpack) under the limit even though I travel pretty light. So as a backup plan, I pack a nylon gym bag inside my backpack. It contains all my electronics and any other fragile or essential items. If they won't let me bring my two carry-on bags onto the plane because they are too heavy, I just remove the gym bag and bring that on board along with the camera bag and check the backpack with the clothing and other non-essentials.

Thank you for doing a Q&A 👍 I’d like to add something... I cannot remember which airlines (in USA) I’ve seen this for, but some allow small/reasonable-sized camera bags in addition to your carry-on and/or personal item. The same as they allow parents to have a diaper bag at no extra charge. So that is definitely worth looking into if worried about carry-on weight. Or if you are a parent, distribute some of the weight into the diaper bag.

My bag is always overweight too - luckily some airlines have no weight policy (as long as you can lift it yourself it's good). But I have a 3 month trip coming up and my bag will be 15-17kg with all my gear, and have 17 flights (quite a few of them budget with 5-7kg limits) so have been worrying about it a little. I generally save any duty free bags and use those for extra stuff. Or if possible hand some stuff to someone with me at the airport at check in so it's not weighed. But as I've been slightly paranoid about my upcoming trip (having had a bad experience with Jet Star, weighing my bag at the gate and forcing me to check it in. I then emptied all valuable gear into a duty free bag and carried my camera, and was charged $60 to check in an empty bag while carrying a now overweight duty free bag!), I've practiced seeing how much I can get into rain coat pockets and duty free bag - which does get it down to 5-6kg. Luckily most airlines I've been with so far have seen it's camera equipment/batteries and have been ok with it, or got me to shuffle things around so it's not one super heavy bag that could injure someone if it falls - which is fair enough. But I'm never flying Jet Star again after that experience, plus the staff were rude about it. I always like to be one of the first ones on the plane too so it's near me and guaranteed overhead locker space (or ideally get emergency exit seats). But travelling with heavy gear that's worth thousands is always a bit stressful.

One comment about film. I occasionally travel with a film camera and both exposed and unexposed film. Most times that I have pulled the film out and asked for a hand-check it has been denied. They say “the X-Ray won’t affect film” and that’s that. I eventually bought lead lined bags to hold my film and quit trying to get airport security to hand-check the film.
@PatrickColpron5 жыл бұрын
Up to iso 400 the baggage x-ray will not cause any damage to exposed and unexposed film. I never ask for hand-check. Pre-911 I'd just drop the rolls in a little basket they provided for film - after 911, those were gone. Everything started being x-rayed.

I've had TSA pull my bag from the x-ray scanner and take my camera equipment out of the bag without telling me. This happened a month after TSA announced that all electronics needed to be taken out of bags before screening (including cameras). I completely forgot to take the camera out of the bag at screening and when my bag came out of the scanner, it was open and my camera was missing. I had no idea that TSA could take cameras out of the scanner before they leave the machine and the TSA screener didn't respond to me when I asked if they opened my bag. At that point, I start freaking out because I thought someone in the line behind me might have opened my bag and taken my camera. Then, like magic, my camera appeared in its protective case on the exit area of the x-ray scanner. In my confusion, I also nearly left my jacket behind at security (with my cell phone in the pocket) because the TSA screener had taken it out of the x-ray scanner and hidden it under his seat. I realize that I had a part in this issue because I had forgotten to take my camera out of my carry-on bag, but at the same time, the TSA should have taken me aside and performed a detailed search of my bag within my view. In conclusion, I advise anyone who is traveling with valuable electronics, computers, and camera gear to go through their bags and personal items thoroughly to make sure that everything that went into the machine comes out of the machine in tact.

You say you don’t carry your charges on your carry on, but you didn’t mention if the reason is because you are not allowed to?

For some reason security often seems to think my capture clip is to hold firearms 😂

Try Manchester Airport every time l have gone through security with my camera gear they ask me to take everything out off my pack, last time travelling to Cuba l used 3 trays then you spend more time repacking. Coming back from Holguin, Cuba wasn't to bad. Also the airline l travel with to Cuba (Thomas Cook) max is 6 kgs and they do weigh all carry on unless you pay extra for premium seating you get 10 kgs extra £300 though. Love your video by the way

Oh yes I remember Manchester they were really picky!!

Same here! On my way to the gorgeous Lake District, Manchester Airport personnel scanned every lens separately over and over, finally found an 3cm x 6cm Allen key in the completely emptied camera bag and confiscated the dangerous weapon. Good to know it wasn't just me they were after..

I've seen some conflicting info on lenses needing to be removed from my carry on. Do I just need to remove the camera body itself or do I need to remove the lenses to be be scanned separately as well?
@Pierretlambert5 жыл бұрын
No need to until they ask you to. If something is not good enough they will just check again asking :-) no worries PS: I just dropped a new video kzbin.info/www/bejne/el6VqXiNl9SioJI enjoy!!!

I think the Ultimate travel is just with a wallet. Buy or ship what I need to the destination. Leave a cam in asia, europe, and us. buy thirts and underwear in the destination :) . Would be a good business ->small storage lockers like amazon lockers in airports around the world, you just ship small stuff to before traveling.

Salut !

Or Global Entry if you live in the U.S., It's issued by U.S. Customs. It includes the TSA precheck that lets you go through security at U.S. airports without emptying your bags, plus it speeds you through customs when you return to the U,S.
