it's a well documented "issue" with the 17 R6, most of us just give it some gas when cranking and it starts right up

Froylan Farias i would just poke the seller, its under warranty anyways and any FI car/bike shouldnt need gas when starting up (they advice against it matter of fact). my Polo 2012 got an ECU update some years ago(2013 i think) then it worked flawless down to -25C 👍🏻

Unless you have a carburetor with squirters that is only going to make it worse. It is like doing the opposite of a choke. I wouldn't even consider that a long start up. When my KTM 640 has been off for over a couple of days it takes more than this to get it going.
@srccde
@srccde 7 жыл бұрын
Where is giving it some gas the opposite of what the choke does? The choke limits the air that's being soaked in and thus, making the mixture a lot richer. Giving it gas manually just makes it even richer and if the issue is because the engine gets a too lean mixture, then this actually solves the issue quite well.
@tylerpatchin4246
@tylerpatchin4246 7 жыл бұрын
S0urc3C0de A choke on bikes normally opens a passage in the carburetor that allows excess fuel to "slip by", since many carbureted bikes have CV carbs. On FI bikes the computer would see the TPS signal raised when the throttle is turned during starting, causing more fuel to be sent into the cylinders. It's not a permanent fix. A brand new $13,000 bike shouldn't have to be played with to get to start in a reasonable time. It should start the first second.

Somehow I feel the culprit is euro 4 emissions requirements that all these bikes are based on. Cold start ECU maps (startup fuel enrichment tables) usually run stupidly rich air/fuel mixtures during cold start conditions. It's just what works best. Stricter emission requirements may have required lowering cold start emissions by running less fuel enrichment during cold starts. That's almost guaranteed to increase the time it takes the engine to start up. Just my $0.02

The r6 is stupidly rich during Cold start. Like on mine there after a bit there is fluid at the end of the muffler. Can be like condensation but my guess is that it is actually fuel. it's so rich that it sometimes even just stalls when I wanna drive it up the driveway right after starting it by touching the throttle

It looks awesome, at least. It sounds like it's just a fueling issue. The R6, in particular, is tuned for maximum top-end, so it falls to reason that the fueling on the bottom, would be an oversight. Easy fix, though - get an ecu controller and give it more fuel down low.

To set up the shift light properly look at a dynograph of the R6 and set it up to come on when you've passed peak torque by x. x being the rpms you lose when changing gear at the point so that your rpms reach peak torque, eg if peak torque is at 13,000 and from 2nd to 3rd you lose around 2,500 rpm then the light for you to change should be at 15,500. Find the mean value of x for every "important" gear changes (5th to 6th isn't as important as 2nd to 3rd on a track) and set it up for it to come up accordingly. There is a more mathematical and correct way of doing it by looking at the dynograph and then using engine rpms and gear ratios to find the perfect spot via maths, but the result is very close to the method mentioned above.

Hey man I work at a shop and the newer models of the r1 and r6 tend to have a longer time to start up at cold start, and sometime while at temp. It helps to blip the throttle a little to start it, I have not heard anything about Yamaha addressing this as an issue. Just so you know it is not great to hold the starter button as long as you did, the starter is only meant to work in bursts. You should hold the starter button 3 seconds at max and then stop, if it doesn't start try another time, the starter can handle it but it does put excessive stress on the starter to run longer than a few seconds. My speculation of this issue is that there is an oil pressure sensor, so at cold start there is no pressure in the lubrication system and takes a little to prime the system before starting. This is only a guess, not official whatsoever.

@lafrad

That cold start is slow, because the tune is too lean when cold. Find a proper tuner, and you can fix it! Manufacturers do the lean start for emissions reasons.

honestly my 2013 ZX-6R 636 had some cold start "deficiency" but seriously, I just gave it a stronger Shorai Lithium Ion Battery and a K/N Fliter and the bike kicked over about 4 times faster. it pretty much start the second you touch it now. So I know I'm talking a different bike but it may be worth the shot.

Have you guys tried a battery with more CCAs? I get that if you buy a new bike you shouldn't have issues with the battery, so that would be annoying, but I would the think that the battery that they're putting in the R6s don't have enough juice for the R6s, making the battery the issue not the actual bike. I live in a colder environment and had battery issues on my 09 R1, bought a Shorai lithium battery and I haven't had to plug my battery in a tender in 3 years. Cheers and good luck!

Give it alittle throttle when you're cranking and it starts up. I know we shouldn't have to do that on a new bike but we do it is what it is. I'm assuming it's some kind of mapping issue, we'll see.

All it is is a fuel problem. When the bike sits for a while, fuel will slowly drain out of the fuel system (back into the tank). When you go to start it, it will take a couple of seconds for the fuel to get pumped back into the injectors. My bet is if you turn the key on and off about 5 or so times to let the fuel pump push fuel all the way to the injectors then try it, it should have a lot better result. Also, if it's not a safety hazard, then they don't do an official recall.
@BioHackGaming

Yah I have tried this actually letting it prime already 10+ times and still have takes a while to start only thing that seems to make it start faster is giving it gas as I start it
@This_Is_Not_My_Username
@This_Is_Not_My_Username 7 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. It was something to try but it appears the fuel pump is cut off when the fuel pressure is at a certain point instead. When the bike sits, fuel drains back down thus allowing air to be sucked into the line and when the pump is turned on, it pressurized the fuel lines but does not bleed off the air. That's probably why twisting the throttle decreases the time it takes to start because you're bleed the air out through the fuel injectors quicker than if you were to do a startup without touching the throttle.
@cryptk
@cryptk 7 жыл бұрын
HONDASBEST so... What is making the fuel drain uphill... Against gravity... The fuel tank is on top of the engine, so if the fuel were to be "draining out" then it would be going down into the engine and flooding the engine, which does not seem to be the case here.
@This_Is_Not_My_Username
@This_Is_Not_My_Username 7 жыл бұрын
Fuel systems especially ones that use a fuel pump work off of pressure and vacuum. Once the pump shuts off, there pressure and vacuum is still in the fuel system causing the fuel to move around a little bit in which ever way the fuel goes.
@b1pig
@b1pig 7 жыл бұрын
Not being 100% familiar with the system on the Yamaha, I have had fuel injected cars that did this exact thing. One, a 95 F150 that would bleed off fuel pressure. air would get into the line and cause it problems starting up.

Yamaha have the highest reliability out of all makers, but doesn't mean they're immune! Hope you get it sorted. I watched the oil change vid and was kind of disappointed by what's involved! I'm looking at getting one (When Yamaha brings them to New Zealand in a couple of months) and it's way more involved than my FZR250 I'll be replacing with it! Oil filter is at the back of the engine at the bottom, don't even have to remove any fairings and drain bolt is located easily accessible between the bottom of the fairings. It's a dream! 10 mins and you're done! That being said, I think I could overlook it for something more powerful with better suspension, better brakes, better handling, not having to put up with sensitive carbs on a 4 cyl 250cc, and amazing looks. Also, set the shift light to 13,750rpm. Max power is at 14,500rpm, so will give you reaction time. Especially if you're looking to go a tooth or 2 less in the front sprocket, will get through those revs quicker.

I would imagine the cold start problem might get worse in colder climates. Not too bad in this video, started right up on the second try, but then again it's usually at least 90 degrees in Texas at this time of year so it does make one wonder how it would handle a cold start in 50 degrees.

this is a very common problem regarding newer emission regulations! they reduce the amount of fuel on cold start ups to heat the cat up quicker and thanks to that engines just don't start up smoothly. so its a cheat basically. I've done this mod on all kinds of vehicles in the past from bikes to generators etc. and all you have to do is find the correct fuel table and add just a small percentage of fuel and presto it fixes the problem! only thing holding the aftermarket back is finding all the fuel tables! it's just a pain to figure out. so I would just go to your local bike tune shop and keep asking them if it's available jet. if you need more info just send me an email! hope this helps! kind regards

That can't be right. All of my bikes just need a tap on the starter even when it's below freezing. My bikes are all carburated and I know how much to choke them to get them turned on though. Seems like it would be an ECU or fuel pressure issue imho. I'm no expert on EFI systems (on bikes) though.

Sounds like the check valve in the fuel system isn't keeping fuel in the lines up to the injectors

I had a similar issue with my '12 ruckus. It wouldnt start unless i heated it up by spraying brake cleaner or carb cleaner into the intake of the carb. Turns out the engine broke-in at around 900 to 1100 miles. Adjusted the vavles and the intake valve was too tight and was staying slightly open and would seal when it warmed up. I think my exhaust wasnt as tight and i added thickness to the shim on those. BUT it might be something to look into. Just to double check the valve adjustments. Maybe the R6 is having the same issues with the valves getting out of spec when the engine breaks in. Let me know if this solves the issue.

I am wondering if it has issues getting fuel to fire up or maybe the firing order is off. If its that its very odd it would be on a mass such as that. I can understand maybe a few but not the mass.

Those Yamaha's you want to start them before the fuel pump finishes priming. so you really want to use the engine start switch as part of the start instead of leaving it on all the time.

Possible Gel Battery? Those batteries need to be "loaded" before they are put to use. I suggest turning on the headlights on for a minute before trying to start (or blipping the starter to "wake up" the battery). But again thats only if it is indeed is a gel battery....

wouldnt having the headlights on for a minute kind of defeat the purpose of having a bit faster cold start time
@adamrodriguez2269
@adamrodriguez2269 7 жыл бұрын
EpilepsyWarning well specifically speaking about a gel battery is that it needs a "wake up". once you demand a charge from the battery, it can then provide the necessary amps/volts/cca whatever needed for a quick start.

it would make more sense if it was hard to start when its cold but you said it was hot so thats strange. and if you change the oil but not the filter thats stupid. would you wash your cloaths with dirty water?

Hello, did you r6 vibrate? Mine vibrates extremely hard after 6k rpm, making it barely ridable. Also, i hear like a buzzing sound from under the tank; The bike got like 100 miles on it, gonna go to the dealership next week

Can you ride that thing out to Mormon MIlls and take some footage of the falls? The roads around there are of the rather twistie kind nd your R6 would eat them up. I particularly like your footage of what appears to be the highway that runs from Austin to Marble Falls. I'm 10,000 miles from home and it does my heart good to see the Hill Country, home sweet home, again.
