The Atheist Experience episode 21.40 for October 15, 2017 with Matt Dillahunty and Don Baker.
Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.
► freethoughtblog...
KZbin comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of KZbin comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

They KNOW (generally) what's right and wrong. They say that they base their morality on the Bible, but the parts they base it on are extremely cherry picked. The bulk of what they see as moral and immoral comes from interactions with the people around them and their upbringing. But once you reveal the stuff in the Bible that's totally separate from their understanding of morality, they suddenly start saying stuff that makes no sense.

Honestly, it's the one thing in the call I'd give him a pass for. He was clearly flustered and probably meant to say something along the lines of "what happened to civility?" or "what happened to good manners?" but just couldn't articulate it in the moment. Based on Matt's response to him, I'd say he was of a similar opinion.

Premise 6: Whereas no basis for moral claims remain, Moral Nihilism is the only Atheism that is sufficiently rational to reject moral claims. Conclusion: Moral Nihilism is the only rational outlook for Atheism.

About the slavery thing, in my opinion, the Leviticus verses are more damning than the Exodus verses because they specifically say that you can have slaves. Leviticus 25:44 Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, shall be of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. So basically, buy your slaves from the heathen around you. Which means that you may have slaves. There's no other way to read it. But then it goes on to say that they're your property. In other places in the Bible it makes clear that you can beat them almost to death and that you can have sex with them. That's not an indentured servant, that's nothing other than a slave in the only sense of the word. A person that's your property. The one time that the Bible doesn't mince words and is really clear about its meaning and it's slavery. Here's the rest of the slavery verses in Leviticus. 25:45 Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that are with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. 25:46 And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit them for a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour.

Or just completely ignore these verses entirely. Honestly there is so much terrible shit in the Bible, just look at Numbers 31. Specifically, look at verses 17 and 18: "Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man." Basically murder all the male children and then take the virgins to rape. I don't see that being preached in church.
@blanks552

The only problem with that is the context. Leviticus is jewish law and is ignored my most Christians for being absurd and restrictive, whereas the Exodus line comes directly from god right after the ten commandments.

I don't think it is lack of intelligence, as much as it is Christian inculcation and indoctrination. They are also taught reasoning and questioning are anathema to faith. Faith is king and trumps all reasoning and evidence. It is really hard for them to get past that, so they fumble for a response, because they have nothing strong and valid to stand upon. It's so easy to fall back on Bible, Jesus, and faith, because therein lies safety for them.
