I’ve used to methods one is to rinse with a 50/50 salt solution the other is a 10% bleach solution. But the very best is just to bake very soon after carving and make pumpkin bread. 3 cups pumpkin mash (allow to bake long enough to carmelize a bit brown), 1 ripe mashed banana, 1/2 cup maple syrup, 1 cup finely chopped nuts, 1/2 mini chocolate chips, 5 Tbsps butter, 3 eggs, 1/2 tsp baking powder. Hopefully that is incentive to not allow mold to start (if doing this use the salt rinse method).

@magikdust2095Ай бұрын
I think the reason people used to remove the top of the pumpkin, where the stem is, is because they used to put actual candles in the jack-o-lantern, and the heat from the candle needed an opening to escape. If you left an actual candle (one with a fire flame) in a pumpkin without a top hole where the heat can escape, then the heat will cause the pumpkin to cook, and that will make it rot far faster. I actually have used tea lights in carved pumpkins before, and you really need to leave the top off while the candle is lit. Otherwise, the pumpkin will get really soft, pretty fast... and it'll start rotting... and all the carving you did won't last very long.
@queenroyalty7550Ай бұрын
But you put the lid back on and carve out a face, so wouldn't the heat escape through the carved holes?
@magikdust2095Ай бұрын
@@queenroyalty7550 Some of it would, but not enough. Heat rises directly from the candle... this is evident to anyone who has tried to hold their hand a little above a flame before... the heat rises directly from the lit flame. So, some of the heat would escape through other holes, but the majority of the heat will rise right above where the the flame is, which is what would cook the top of the pumpkin (if you don't leave the top off).
@johnbinford6706Ай бұрын
No offense but this is totally wrong. Tea candles do not have nearly enough heat to "cook" the pumpkin. Try putting your hand the same height above a tea candle that the top of the pumpkin is (~12 inches for a decent size pumpkin). You will feel some mild warmth and that's all. The only effect it has it that it slightly dries the inner top of the pumpkin over time. This is not a bad thing because less moisture means less rotting.
@queenroyalty7550Ай бұрын
@@johnbinford6706 Thanks. I knew better but wanted to hear the explanation.
@monikahardegger4671Ай бұрын
@@magikdust2095I put always the lid back on with real candles. Of course just outside the house. The lid gets sometimes a little black or dry because of it, but it works.

I don't get it. Just cut a hole around the stem angling inwards and you can use it as a lid while actually having a place for the candle inside.
