I purchased the same kit, same issues, but haven't been able to install it yet, my car doesn't even have the side holes to hold the new skirts, nor any screws underneath, I'm considering the theory that not all E36 have them, or that one of the previous owners actually filled them up on my car.

The older ones never had the side skirts at all

I glued the strip to the side skirt first, and the installed the clips to the skirt first. Then, use a rubber mallet to give it a tap to set the clip into the body.

I painted mine with 1 can but I advice to buy 2 so you are not stressing over missing some paint to finish the job

What I don't understand is that why you're not showing us viewers how to paint your side skirts. Is there something you're hiding and you don't anybody to find out .

I have lots of videos on painting stuff that's all. I have one on the mirrors process is basically the same.
