I don't know if you are aware of this but if you pack a barrel filled with clothes when it gets to Jamaica they will assume you might be trying to sell them. So they will charge you more to clear it. It's better to put the clothes at the bottom and put other items from the middle to the top. When they check the barrel they usually remove half of what's inside then put them back in.

If you go to the immigration office and declare you are a returning resident, you pay waaaay less fees at customs and you are given a year to ship stuff
@thepassportlife4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Karen, good to know.
@karenr33553 жыл бұрын
@@thepassportlife first you have to go to the immigration/passport office... The Customs Agency/Returning Residents Unit to get your passport stamped for an unconditional landing if it is not a Jamaican passport, then you go to the customs office near the wharf where you fill out paper work, basically listing all that you will be shipping .... so in 2009 I paid only $2,500 JD to customs for a house full of furniture, ie bedroom sets, living room, washer, dryer, fridge, stove. etc..... Mind you, the amount that the company that received and stored the stuff for 2 day charge me was an entirely different story
@originalfoxylady45203 жыл бұрын
@@karenr3355 Thank you so much for this info. I heard about a returning resident have to get a broker in JA to clear the things. I was thinking of a 40" container with car. 🙌 bless up.
@karenr33553 жыл бұрын
@@originalfoxylady4520 don't get me wrong, you will have to deal with a broker out there as the company that ships your things is not going g to be the same ones that receive and store your stuff in JA at least back then they didn't, one company ships and another receives and stores..... Please ask your shipping company to get the fee from the company in JA so that you are not charged differently when you go to get your stuff. For example, I was told that the broker was charging me $86k, JD included storage and transportation of stuff to the house in country, this was the price I was given even when I called the broker the day before I went to clear the stuff..... the next day, paid the broker, went to identify the stuff so customs could check, I was then told I had to pay an addition $12k JD service/storage fee before I could get my Mom's belongings.... I was livid because if I did not have the extra cash, thank goodness for ATM, I would had had to pay an extra day for storage..... as stated before I only paid $2,500 JD to custom to clear everything as a resident with conditional landing (done on a rush as i didnt have time to get a JA passport for my Mom)

I found this video useful halfway threw the video the sound went funny and was hard to hear. This is my first time packing a barrel to send to Jamaica. One good tip is to make sure the plastic bags don't have holes or writen on it. If so turn bag it inside out or it may bleed onto clothing. ☆ Another good tip is to buy large zip bags for Dollertree or DollerRama to pack spillable in.
