You can slug liquid into the compressor if it is upside down. Liquids can't compress, so you can damage the compressor by injecting liquids into the suction side. Pressure is directly related to temperature.

LOW refrigerant does not mean a bad compressor- it means a leak. Refrigerant is not consumed it leaks out sometimes. Finding the leak and replacing oil and refrigerant after a fix is indicated. The low pressure switch can prevent compressor clutch from engaging also. Just a couple things to consider if you are a do it yourself kind of guy. Thank you for sharing with us. nice help video

The old stuffs R-12. I kept the needle in the green when the engine is on and the a/c is on full blast. Even when the clutch on the compressor disengages during the on/off cycles of the compressor. Actually, he was wrong by turning the can right-side up you will only fill your A/C with the fumes of the can and only get a little liquid when you agitate the can having the can upside down is the best way to fill your A/C system. No-matter if your 134a can comes with a trigger or a valve the can should be upside down and you intermittently introduce the liquid refrigerate into your system by opening the valve on the can a little then closing it letting the compressor pump the new refrigerate around the system and repeat until you have the desired pressure. You will find that the charge will last longer and be colder than if you only put the vapor with a little bit of the liquid into your A/C system.

Over fill or under fill or allowing air in, won't cool. Sight glass is an important diagnostic tool, found on top of the receiver / dryer. Bubbles while running, low! Very few bubbles not so much & certainly not a can. Bubbles gone, stop! Once off, count up to 15 seconds and once bubbles show in sight glass, stop! System is done. Overfilled (Too Much R134a) if level never drops in the sight glass when A/C cycles off, and use a good spot light! Check many other leak points and done. Most likely, compressor shaft seal. Not easy to replace as it is buried with compressor off. Lube O-rings W/R12 lube as R134a is hydrophobic and draws moisture into threads. It will peel aluminum threads off if it moves! R134a carries more latent heat per pound than R12. This explains the lower charge amount. (R12 X 0.8= R134a charge) Have a lucky one! DK,,ASE Master since 78, retired.

Jim Bullock, Absolutely true! leak sealer could stop up components such as the orifice in the system, expansion valve etc, the Florescent dye works great to show where the leak is, and a leak doesn't necessarily mean the compressor is bad, It can be something less expensive such as a O-ring seal, or a defective pressure line or hose leaking.

The other refrigerate beside the 134a was R12, and it was not sold over the counter because in order to service the R12 system, you had to have a license, and it was a must-have to have a recover/recharging machine because you couldn't let this freon into the air it was illegal and could kill everyone in a shop.
@rickkwitkoski19765 ай бұрын
No. Freon CAN NOT "kill everyone in a shop"! Freon(s - there are several different types) are in part responsible for depleting the Ozone layer in the upper atmosphere. Mostly the ones that were of importance were the ones that were used for spray can propellants. They just drifted upwards... eventually. Refrigerant Freon can do the same so for environmental purposes, you are not supposed to purge them into the atmosphere.

It's part of the engine's design, but it's so slow, even though the engine is not at 4quarts anymore at oil change, it stays in the tolerance range for the oil change interval.
@raydavison29726 ай бұрын
@@kc8ufv You can't equate a cars oil system with aircon. As you say, most engines will 'use' some oil, some negligible some quite substantial. It can be due to oil leaking past piston rings or valve stems or by design in the case of a crankcase ventilation system where an oil mist is vented into the combustion mixture to burn off. However it is nonsensical to then say it's ok for often dangerous gases to be leaking from a sealed system. As they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

The old stuff was R-12. The EPA made it illegal because the patent on it ran out and the company with the R-12 patent didn't want to lose their profits so they "pointed out" that R-12 destroys the ozone.
@andybarry37515 ай бұрын
By international agreement in 1987 (the Montreal Protocol), the use and production of CFCs such as R12 began to be phased out, with automobile manufacturers required to stop using it by the end of the 1994 model year. The EPA could care less if the patent "ran out". This had nothing to do with the patent expiring, if that were true, every chemical company would have been happily making it. In the United States, vehicles produced after 2021 no longer contain R-134A in the air conditioning system. My only concern is that there will still be a small amount of air captured between the point where you hook on the nozzle and the low pressure port. Is there anyway to purge that small teaspoon of air because isn't having any air in the system is bad?
@garrykennedy54843 жыл бұрын
Just let it keep purging while you put the connection together. That's the best you can do. Never had any problems so far for the last 40 years of doing it this way.

use a vacuum pump, that is the correct way. it doesn't purge it removes all air out of the entire system.
@paulhooversr81497 ай бұрын
@@robvoyles Unless you have a leak, then the vacuum pump is your enemy because it draws more air/moisture into the system. If you know you have a slow leak and don't want to repair it, then your best bet is to top off the charge as soon as you notice the cooling starting to degrade. The intent is to always maintain a suction pressure above atmospheric pressure.

This is really good. Best one i think and Ive been watching a bunch of these. One thing i have to say is it seems like MY CAR is the only car around where the opening is not just sitting right up top, nice and easy, clear as day, mine is like under the freakin front wheel up inside the damn fender, like ridiculous, ill need a 20 foot hose to be able to see the gauge. Whyyyyyy??? I can't explain how literally any little thing i do seems like it is just way more difficult than it is supposed to be!!!! Waaaa waaa waaaa 👶😫😩😤 just had to vent. Ps i have a ford focus 2003.

Isn’t it not legal to discharge Freon into the atmosphere? Kind of don’t understand why you say to release some if the pressure is to high.

What vehicle is that? I haven't seen a sight glass on any GM vehicle or any vehicle since the days of R12 and expansion valves. And I know this is a 7 year old video but the days of 134A cans that puncture are long gone. The cans have valves on them now that require a different can adapter.

Well my gauge goes down to green when the compresser runs, then into the red when it isnt running? My gauge says to charge to blue range. It was to the 25 in the green. So is it charged if its at 70 when clutch isnt running?? The air isnt cold, the clips never turned any color!! I need help. The clutch goes on n off?? Then i got a different hose with the pop up green thing, same thing, its to the top green then when clutch runs it goes way down?? Is it supposed to stay up? No cool air??

how do you know when the can is empty to use another can?

Of all the research online,it says that if you see some bubbles in sight glass whilst the ac is running,it means system is ok.why is it that your saying if sight glass is clear its ok?👍

Cadillac dealer replaced my AC compressor which they found was leaking refrigerant. Charged me $1350 for that. Then one month later no cold AC again. They recharged system to find there was another leak in the evaporator, which is a 10 hour job due to its location deep inside the dashboard. They want $1850 to replace that. Seems like all refrigerant leaks out after one month. They did not mention the leak sealant to add as a fix to the problem as you mentioned in your video for leakage after 1 month or so. Is the leak sealant safe to use or possibility will damage the system? Do you suppose they're not telling me about the leak sealant you mentioned so they can get more money from me? thanks!

I had a Mazda that was leaking around the compressor instead of replacing the compressor I purchased a can of AC metal sealant that seal leaks around the compressor and it also seals metal like the evaporator leaking also it cost about $30 for a small can but it worked for me when my compressor was leaking a can a day and I never had any problems anymore with that AC it worked great

Get your money back use a sealer can or 2 wait 2 hours then use Duracool and bring it up to 38 psi for about 10 minutes. This should last for another 10 years.
@louiswilson69502 жыл бұрын
If it leaks after the sealer, it could be hoses, Condenser & Compressor. Then put vacuum on it or UV Dye. Probably use Vacuum then sealer, then vacuum to check. Don't use Freon to Check System

Not sure if you still reply but i added r134a to the green just shy of 30. But cold isnt really cold at all. I did discover at the compressor low line connector was spraying out when clutch would engage. However now ac clutch continues to run but not cold at all in cabin. Any thoughts?

Same problem here. Did you end up fixing it? If so how? Thanks
