22nd February 2022 ..Sad news today that Gary Brooker lost his fight against the dreaded Cancer,aged 76 yrs,passing away peacefully. A great talented and well-loved Artist who will be sadly missed by his family,and fans,and all who knew him.R.I.P. Gary Brooker.

He sadly passed away in 2022, but at least he was doing what he loved up to the end and the quality of his voice hadn’t deteriorated at all, if anything it got better with age which is rare. RIP

You had to be old enough when this song was first released in 1967 to fully appreciate its soaring beauty. As a very lucky teenager I loved it then and over the years since it's only gotten more beautiful and moving. It's a touchstone for us, a special treasure we're so glad to call our own.

That is the remarkable thing to me. I'm a big Bob Seger fan, but Bob, who had one of the most soulful rock voices ever, lost the ability to sing in the same key and hit the same notes as he used to, in his early sixties. I'm sure being a lifelong smoker didn't help. Gary's voice here at 73 is simply amazing.

Yup, he is definitely as good as Joe Cocker - and Joe Cocker is of course great. However, everybody knows Joe Cocker. But hardly anyone knows the name of the guy who belongs to the group with the strange name and who sings that wonderful song whose text nobody really understands, but still loves 🙃

Takes me back to high school dances. This was popular then. Procul Harem was always one of my favorites from that era. Gary's voice only got better with age. So rich and soulful.

Brooker, as great a performance as the first time I heard this song on the radio in '67 when I was 11 years old! Loved the song ever since. I lived in the inner city across the street from a small music store. I would always go in there and look at records and hear the latest hits he had playing in the store. Got turned on to some great music back then at such a young age.

Yes it was. I was 13 yrs old back in 1968, when A Whiter Shade of Pale was a hit, it gave me chill bumps then and still does at 66 yrs old. We miss you Gary.

There's a performance of this song by Joe Cocker on youtube and I love his voice too but Brooker definitely has the edge. Joe's voice went towards the end of his life but Brooker's only seems to improve.

They closed their 2019 U.S. tour in Boston with this, except they started with Bach, and Gary tossed in a bit of the Moody Blues' "Go Now" just before AWSOP. They introduced it as the Lesson." They were magnificent; their version of their epic "Whaling Stories" was the best of the seven live versions I've heard going back to the tour wth Dave Ball on guitar.
