You had to be old enough when this song was first released in 1967 to fully appreciate its soaring beauty. As a very lucky teenager I loved it then and over the years since it's only gotten more beautiful and moving. It's a touchstone for us, a special treasure we're so glad to call our own.

That is the remarkable thing to me. I'm a big Bob Seger fan, but Bob, who had one of the most soulful rock voices ever, lost the ability to sing in the same key and hit the same notes as he used to, in his early sixties. I'm sure being a lifelong smoker didn't help. Gary's voice here at 73 is simply amazing.

They closed their 2019 U.S. tour in Boston with this, except they started with Bach, and Gary tossed in a bit of the Moody Blues' "Go Now" just before AWSOP. They introduced it as the Lesson." They were magnificent; their version of their epic "Whaling Stories" was the best of the seven live versions I've heard going back to the tour wth Dave Ball on guitar.

Much respect to all these older musicians, who honed their craft out of love for the music. Singers are a dime a dozen. You can tell the difference between the ones who are in it only for the 💰.
