I really appreciate your sharing this. You do awesome work in Procreate. One drawing for me takes so much time and energy that I can’t but marvel at comic book artists like yourself 👏🏼

Thank you so much! Actually, for me a drawing can also take a lot of time. Especially when it comes to comic book artwork. The more panels on a page, usually means longer for me to complete.

I have my comics printed here: www.grekoprinting-comixwellspring.com/comics-saddle-stitch-staple-binding/ For this comic, I had it printed on the 60# Uncoated Text White.

What CMYK color profile do you use for print? Also, what file type do you export to finish in IA?
@ReneArreolaArt Жыл бұрын
The original artwork (be it scanned ink art or from Procreate) becomes a Photoshop PSD or TIF file. I give it the Colormatch RGB profile. In Adobe Illustrator, I place the colored artwork as PSD or TIF. The color profile in AI is set to Coated SWOP. I save these files as .ai. Then, final comic book is assembled in Adobe InDesign, placing those lettered .ai files in sequence in InDesign. From there, the book is finally exported out as one PDF file using Gracol CMYK. I usually print the floppies through Comix Well Spring. The hardcover book I print through Mixam.

What is your opinion of comiclife for layout for all digital workflows? Like yourself I am former prepress/print designer( 19 years) who migrated to 3D/CG animation but have recently become interested in 2D art again (along with 2D animation) as I near retirement in 16 months Anyway I am 48 pages into an all digital graphic novel and using comiclife 3 on windows.(sample on my channel) I like it alot but I rarely see indie comic artist mention it for some reason and was curious as to why.
@ReneArreolaArt4 ай бұрын
I've never heard or seen comiclife prior to you mentioning it. I went to check it out online, but honestly when I saw that it was all digital...I just kind of lost interest. I guess if it works for you, awesome. I've never used it. After having worked in photoshop and procreate making my comics (for the lineart part of it) for the last 5 years, I've concluded as an independent artist I am more satisfied drawing with pen/ink on paper. Don't get me wrong, I still color and letter my comics digitally and am quite reliant on Procreate for coloring and Ilustrator for lettering. I guess maybe the reason one doesn't hear about it from indie creators is that the program just isn't well known enough? Congrats on your graphic novel, it looks cool. One of the other things I've also reconciled is that the final product is the final product: comics in print or digital comics, ultimately they have to find a paying audience, if that's what we as artists concern ourselves with if we are to make some money or even a living at this. I personally am not there yet. But I have found for myself that amidst all the digital noise that is social media, I relish being able to create my comic art (the drawing and storytelling facets) traditionally. It is nice to "unplug" these days whenever possible. But perhaps that is just my own perspective as I did just turn 50 this year :)

Oh yeah, when I got my start in prepress/graphic design for printing, Quark was the standard. That and Rage Maker--I mean, Page Maker! :)

Thank you for the video. So you make canvas without any bleed area, do you add it afterwards? and what are the side borders sizes? In your pdf files both left and right borders are the same
@ReneArreolaArt3 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching my video, so the one thing to keep in mind is that I assemble my final comic book using InDesign. As for the border sizes, they are similar to the blue line Strathmore comic book drawing boards. Those are what I use when I draw traditionally. But even when I set up my artwork to draw in Proceate, I have set up my own digital version of an 11" x 17" comic book artboard. I should perhaps make a quick video talking about this?

When it comes to the double spread pages what size canvas do you use?
@ReneArreolaArt4 ай бұрын
In Procreate, on my older ipad pro 2, I go actual print size of the comic at 300 dpi. I find there's no need to do traditional 11" x17" double spreads since the artwork is already natively digital. The limiting factor in Procreate for canvas size is the layers limit. The larger the canvas size, the fewer the layers you get in Procreate. If I'm working digitally, then I want to use all the capabilities afforded me by the tools. For digital, that means having layers. While one can argue that you could use just fewer layers, I find it helpful for me to have access to more layers should I need them. But, that's just me. Your mileage may vary ;)

I have an inquiry please am trying to reprint comic book out of stock via printing company and the problem they do require to set margins and bleeding points before uploading files and honestly I have searched the internet to find away to determine the right margins and bleeding points for my comic book the size is 8.5x11 inch and I couldn’t come up with an answer I would appreciate any tips thank you
@ReneArreolaArt3 ай бұрын
In my experience, standard minimum bleeds for almost anything in print is going to be .125 inches or 1/8" inches all around your pages. So, if your printed comic book size has a finished size of 8.5" x 11", your pdf pages for print should all be 8.75" x 11.25". You are essentially adding an extra .25 (1/4") to each page, which accounts for the .125 (1/8") bleeds all around. But these spec's can vary, depending on the printer. Can't the printer provide you with some kind of template?
